after these engine sim sounds, you can go after tyre noise, very interesting how tyre manufactures use tread pattern to make tyre noise less annoying

How much computation power do we need to simulate this audio? Most games, GTA: V for example, have 2 stereo recordings of real vehicles and use granular synthesis to choose the point in the audio that sounds closest to current engine speed and loops these little grains over and over to produce an engine sound. The source sounds are idle, linear throttle increase on what sounds like a dyno. The two record points are underhood/front and exhaust/rear. I'm developing a game featuring vehicles and procedural sounds would be super interesting to experiment with but I fear much more than a repeating sinewave may be out of my skillset :P

44000 iterations per second? Why are you simulating a single sample at a time? It'd make more sense to generate acoustic blocks representing a whole frame. Your rendering isn't 44 kHz, it's more like 60 Hz, so for each rendering frame generate 44k/60 acoustic samples...
@AngeTheGreat2 күн бұрын
It already does that, it doesn't change the fact that the fundamental output frequency is 44 kHz. The structure of that computation or batching of samples is irrelevant for this discussion

I downloaded this simulator and it was awesome. But I don't know why but sounds are constantly cutting and repeating. @AngeTheGreat can I solve this somehow.
@AngeTheGreat2 күн бұрын
Hold the n key and scroll down until it goes away. This happens when your CPU can't keep up with the requirements of the simulation, it's in the tutorial

Talking about the 'wobble' sound effect here: If the exhausts are different lengths, then they would be offset in pitch just a little, as you mentioned; due to that, you can expect some resonance. I've heard many people suggest multiple straight-through pipes sound much better, anyways, due to this effect.

One thing I remember from my father replacing his transmission, is how he had also removed the exhaust manifold since it was beginning to crack (truck being over almost 20 years old with over a quarter of a million miles at the time); He left the manifold off the engine block when testing the transmission, and the truck was extremely loud... could hear it clearly from over 200 feet away lmao.

will it be possible to simulate turbos or superchargers in the future?, i mean it woud be cool to see a realistic turbo also within this new system, be able to see a turbo spooling making the turbo whistle and also modifiying the sound, could make this even better, better than already is which is amazing
@rmatt3753 күн бұрын
Brilliant! I am assuming it takes a reasonable amount of computing power to run this. But would it be possible to map the output sound against revs, throttle setting, intake vacuum etc it might be possible to run it on android and link it to real time output from a vehicle's OBDII output to create an exciting engine note in the cabin for us who drive around in diesel cars?

@andrewfrey69605 күн бұрын
I'm sure it would be detrimental in the long run, but what if you cut back on the frequency? Adult human hearing fades unfortunately, so it would just be wasted on babies otherwise.
@AngeTheGreat5 күн бұрын
Reducing the frequency would reduce the computational burden slightly, however, there are a few costs to doing it, the most obvious one being the loss of high frequency audio components as you mentioned. The more difficult challenge, however, is that fluid simulations require a minimum frequency to maintain stability and will become more unstable as the frequency is decreased so there is a limit to how low it can be pushed

Is there a particular point in space that the simulation considers the "microphone", and does the sound change if it's "moved around"? Curious to see if this can produce the "intake noise" one would hear on some DTM cars, for instance.
