My vote, mostly motivated by neurosis as it relates to the n54, is for a sort of throw-it-together caution-to-the-wind build. I know a lot of new guys in the n54 scene feel a similar kind of anxiety and it would be nice to see what kind of power a sort of cheap-ish build can maintain for some length of time. If nothing else you're advancing the knowledge of where things fail, when, and why. Minimizing the variables is a pretty unique opportunity to see what gives, if it does at all. Anyways, thanks for everything you do--it makes me feel confident that I'm not going to destroy my measly 18psi stock turbo FBO setup lol

Will one blow up earlier than the other once you are asking it to give more for fun competition and results? If so will the cost of having to rebuild that whole mess afterwards be worth it in content and or affordability?? If you spend or use the expenses now will the engine hold up when you inevitably want "MO POWA BABY!"?? and the engine holds and you victoriously get to chew gum as a third place holder in the winners Beer Tent at the end of the Roll Racing event?? I do know one thing for sure WE as Zero to 60 Andrew and friends FANS want to cheer our brother on as he tries to take the same car we all love and hate together and own the same cars modded similarly yet with trials and triumphs that we LOVE to relate to and CHEER ON to FUN and FAILURES at the biggest speed and power for the BUCK!! What do you think about css support with an LA sleeve flanged sleeve insert vs darton sleeve? I don't like darton because the o rings in the bottom of the sleeve I have heard they are a maintenance item and need to be replaced overtime or get coolant mixing in the oil or even worse sleeves dropping and losing compression. They do dry sleeve inserts with flanges on top for s55 b58 and s58 I don't know why no one has done this yet for n54 or n55 or if someone has it hasnt been very published

@geordiegibson12105 ай бұрын
Just a question, as I may have missed the answer in the video, do you not have another crank to use, so you can reuse that same block, piston and rod combo? Or can that one not be polished? Polishing to remove minor imperfections is a whole different ball game to grinding a crank, and yes the BMW cranks don't like being ground, but i believe they accept a light polish, all to do with the hardened chrome finish applied from factory. And another random thought, something that I don't know if it is even possible with these motors. Look at the older BDA/Cosworth engines, Barum Engines on KZbin here does a lot of what they call "long stud conversions", where instead of enclosing the complete deck, they literally drill and retap the head studs so the base is more directly tied in with the crank - thus giving structural rigidity to the head, bock and crank, effectively tieing it all together as one unit. And they end up running near 800hp through a 4cyl doing this. Is that even a possiblility? Questions for machine shops and engineers, may be a better end result than closing in the deck.
@ZeroTo60Tube5 ай бұрын
Well my concern with remove a crank is the extra costs involved. Really once the crank hub is removed it should be replaced with an aftermarket pinned item. $1500 there alone, then mains and mains bolts. So my thought was if I’m spending that money I may as well spend a bit more and close the deck. There are definite issues with open decks around the 800whp number. So if spending money on removing and refitting even a good crank I want to take the engine past 800whp. Regarding long studs, I have spoken with someone about this who has cross sections of n54s cut open. Currently working out pros and cons.

For crank go to a machine shop get them to machine you one piece. It should be less than 1k. Then compare it to oem crank if all meaurements ok ready to install. Make sure they do it with forged steel. 1 piece crank for peace of mind. Pins or keyway if you on a budget.

@kencooper86365 ай бұрын
I would recommend going the full build as long as you can ensure the machining and engineering of the work is done correctly. For example, the use of a torque plate when boring and honing the bores. That block and crank you got off me are no good for this build? It would be so ensuring for you to know that you had a bulletproof bottom end that could handle whatever level of power you wished to achieve.
@oncall35705 ай бұрын
Find the cause: Open and inspect your oil pump- and find what is your 'abrasive' (whatever is not bearing material). Going forward, >500+ RWHP you probably need to open the bearing clearances a little, but for street it's less reliable, so consider reasonable limits unless budget is much greater. Reliability and precision wins the day, but few of us resist temptation at considerable, delayed expense. Bear in mind that factory construction often varies with many bearing specs (Ford uses coloured dots, I think some BMW too) on the rod caps which disappear with age, and denote the minor size of the bearing in their build charts. With N54s the bearing I've seen are an all-application size- but there must be many options by now, esp in Europe. Or just better to go B58+8HP? A proper build for power favours wisdom with application, engine type, bearing and piston clearances (race engineering experience!), so in my book it might not be best to do a full build (or tune above >500) unless you can channel some suitable pots of golden elixirs, the kind racers spend their time distilling (and trying to keep secret). I know people do it, but is it skill and precision, or plain old luck, money, or both? There is good general info around like kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaCkaWSih8yEZ7s but it seldom goes into changing tolerances to your purpose and configuration Looking forward to your thoughts and content!

Sell the good engine and put the money towards a suitable build .

Its youtube - people want to see excess and silly stuff - 1000hp ftw for no other reason than it ticks both those boxes. more realistically - i'd like to see you build something cheaper that is able to put power down on the street - in mexico - and will last a while rather than instajunkbin itself.

Use your good engine, to make a healthy 800hp But then your talking about 1000hp, why not prove you can make that power and then dialed it down to hook as much as possible in dig races. The more options there is, the more reason to keep breaking things. Of course not intentionally but for science purposes only.
