Having prospective clients fill out an eval form is a great idea! I shoulda thunk that! 😉 I’ve had something similar in my other side hustles (private piano teaching, which I no longer do, and pet sitting, which I still do sporadically). However, I totally disagree that people should run away from editors who don’t provide sample edits. Admin and marketing involve so many unbillable hours, so I refuse to do free sample edits. I simply show prospective clients my portfolio and give them references if requested. (But then again, I’ve been mostly getting leads from referrals, not cold contacts.) I don’t advertise sample edits, and fortunately, only one person has asked for them, but if someone requests them, I limit them to 1K words (four manuscript pages) and charge a nominal fee. If you limit your word count and you charge for sample edits, then I don’t see anything wrong with them. There are many seasoned editors who don’t offer sample edits. Another reason I have a huge problem with sample edits is that some authors try to get free editing for the entire manuscript by getting free sample edits from several editors. You just have to weed out the PITA clients. I always refer people to the EFA and The Writer's Market rates, but a lot of editors say that the EFA hasn't kept up with inflation. The rates are from many moons ago! 😉 The Writer's Market rates make more sense to me.

I'm a freelance, freedom writer. I write solely to focus on the story. Which is grammar edited by a line editor. Then content edited by a clarity and flow editor including better wording. Then it's proof and beta read. Then I submit the work.

Just looking through your content. You did a really good job in your shows. I guess life called and had to give it up, but, you had very good content - and I have nothing to do with writing, just a curious dude. 👍🏽

Do you have any examples of what might be light copy-editing vs heavy copy-editing? I'm not sure if my idea of heavy is correct or not.

The rates kind of put me off self-publishing (I'm writing in English, but I live in the Czech republic and our salaries are substantially lower than American ones, so this is a lot of money for me). Do you have any video on self-publishing VS. traditional publishing? I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

(And by this I'm not saying you editors don't deserve to be paid for your hard work, mind you 😊)

Mollie Reads can you also give me an insight as a non-native speaker I worry about some sentences or even words might look ridiculous to some readers. So which should I choose line editing or heavy copyright?
