Better batt. Drop the oil. Inspect oil. Fresh oil/filter. If ok then comp test again but all at wide open throttle. Comps should all be within 10% of each other

I would definitely drop that oil first, put a new filter and also be really careful cranking it especially if the oil pump has gone. Didn’t like that clicking sound when you were turning it over, sounded a bit strange. Would definitely becareful when cranking and making sure it builds up oil pressure too. Think if it runs ok might be worth getting a Terraclean if you don’t want to strip off the head etc

17yr Mercedes master technician here. I'm about 90% sure the alignment dowels on the camshaft broke and the motor jumped time. The M156 is a interference engine and this has been an on-going issue. there is a 4mm metal dowel that locates the cam sprocket to the camshaft. these cam break, ( usually on the exhaust cam) base timing moves and the pistons smack the valves. In severe cases the motor will be locked.

Great video, that oil filter is odd though. either someone damaged it when installing it. or there's been something odd going on with the lubrication system. Would a seized oil pump, or blocked oil pipe cause that? I think I'd definitely drop the oil and examine it before starting it and maybe check the oil pump operation if it's accessible.
@ProMilkshake2 жыл бұрын
GM/Vauxhall/Saab 2.0 2.2 and 2.4 engines all do this to their filters. My oil filter looks like that after every oil change which gets done every 6-8k miles. I've tried a handful of different brands of filters including genuine vauxhall with the same results. Could be perfectly normal.
@matthewbriggs3882 жыл бұрын
@@ProMilkshake agreed. I think it’s more important that there’s nothing untoward lodged in the filter paper. I always let mine drain and then check for this.
@richardjones52552 жыл бұрын
There is something that does not entirely add up in this one, I suspect that you could be on the right trail over the insurance, the oil filter looks far from wonderful. Could that point to an issue. Refill the oil, perhaps fit a new filter, crank it with the fuel supply fuse missing and ensure it builds pressure before you try to run the sleeping beast.
@paulmerrick69802 жыл бұрын
Look at the MOT history, it fails several times on tyres . Once with the cords exposed. If you can’t afford tyres then it’s not going to have been serviced either. That would explain the 5 year old looking oil filter.
@moodyk19792 жыл бұрын
Also that it’s probably had a hard life too and loads is burnouts etc, or drifting. That’s the prob, many pick them up because they can purchase the car at good prices then when it comes to maintenance they can’t afford to look after them.
@MrAvant1232 жыл бұрын
That oil filter looked like the original one or very early on in the cars life as I wouldnt have expected any recent servicing would have used an AMG filter
@paulmerrick69802 жыл бұрын
Agreed, original owner would have had a car like this serviced. From experience Mercedes servicing isn’t cheap. Last owner has not had this serviced and probably had it ‘tuned’ then ragged it to death. I’m expecting it to knock like a bastard when it fires up.
@matthewbriggs3882 жыл бұрын
Try that compression test on cylinder 1 again. Also check that the throttle was open when you did the earlier tests. Jam it open if necessary. If cylinder one is still low, try a squirt of engine oil see if that improves it. If it does it’s worn bore/ rings. Good luck 🤞🏻

Compression figures might be a bit uneven due to lack of oil pressure in the hydraulic tappets if its been sat for a bit, no rust on the bores so deffo not flood damaged from water getting into the engine, if it was flooded the water still would be there regardless of time, it sounded very "clicky" when cranking Chuck plugs in and try it like you said, deffo more to it than what's you've been told but if its a copart car I'm not surprised

Compression readings should be within 10% of each other. With the loose carbon in some of the cylinders, I'm wondering if carbon build-up is causing the valves to not seal properly. Change the engine oil and filter before attempting a start. Once it is running, the excess carbon should burn off and restore compression.
@mrbakerr12 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I don’t think how high the values are is as important as there being no more than 10% difference between highest and lowest figure.

10 bar is around 145 psi according to Google so id say compression is surprisingly good considering that carbon build up... have to say cylinder 1 looked like a snapped off valve at first, i thought oh god its jammed in and stopping engine from rotating. cylinder 5 looked like grease squirted out from a gap in the rings, never seen oil do that so how that carbon formed i dont know but compression doesnt indicate anything as an issue. can you do a leak test on each cylinder to see how much they loose? i really want to see the oil now. i think the oil filter has been there a long time and might not have been far off starting to break down
@HuntsChris2 жыл бұрын
A mini vac in the pistons would have been a bit of extra comfort to make sure nothing was in them, no rust in the bores at all, I don’t think that engine has seen water.
@shaundadson83022 жыл бұрын
Hope you've struck lucky and its just carbon in the bores Dean, but it did look ominously like shavings of bore coating in a couple of those bores. Don't know about this engine, but I know a lot of modern engines use a hard coating such as Nikasil to line the Aluminium bore walls for the piston rings to run on and that this does fail. Although you have quite high compression readings there is a large variation in some, (although as others have said this could be due to the bores being dry after standing). The oil filter didn't look nice either, (obviously been installed by someone caring!) and the noise on cranking didn't sound great. Fingers crossed when you hit the start button.

A small squirt of 2 stroke mix into each cylinder (10% 2 stroke oil, 90% petrol) might change the compression on cylinders that were low. Could just be the rings need some lubrication to seat cleanly after being sat so long.

@@hughjarse4627 nope. It's called a wet compression test. Google it. It removes any discrepancies caused by the rings that have sat dry for months, and that would ultimately clear up if the engine could run and get hot+lubricated like normal.

Drain the oil, sump off inspect for metal shavings or water . If there’s nothing suspicious from there I would go ahead and seal and bolt the sump back on crank it with the fuel pump fuse out to build up oil pressure then proceed to proper start up, very strange how it’s classified as water damaged no rust and surely there would’ve been some indication of water.
