Thanks alot man! This really resonates with me, I turned 18 recently, and I've decided to study 3 courses over the next 2 years to go to uni them being: Further maths, Physics, and A Level Math. I'm really on the fence and worried about messing up my trajectory on life and I want to make the right decision, especially since I've never worked before, but that ending segment where everyone is still learning and its ok to change, really boosts my confidence to give it my all. Its like you said, better to try and fail, than to look back when your old and be disappointed

I really appreciate this video, thank you. I definitely understand the "what's next" perception once meeting a goal. This is my freshman year of undergrad, and I started in Physics, but I realized that while I enjoy physics, I enjoy a lot of electrical and computer engineering topics, so this semester [practically over now] I transferred into ECE. I will probably get a physics minor because I'm only 2 courses away, but more importantly the ECE course I took this semester was by far my favorite course so far. It was a Digital Circuits/Logic/Systems [name differs by each uni] which is a beginners CE course, although I know I gravitate more towards subfields of EE. I know I want a Masters degree, but am actively considering PhD so long as I have a specialization. But finding that focus area seems so hard to me. Like I said, early in my UG, so I haven't gotten much exposure to many topics, but I've done a very superficial dive into many subfields. I love the idea of focusing on RF, RF IC, Telecommunications, IC, Circuits, Microelectronics, VLSI, Photonics, there's probably more I'm blanking on, etc. While I don't have the coursework or intern or research experience, they all sound exciting. How did you know what focus area was the one?
@alithedazzling

Honestly it was so hard to focus on just one. All the ones you listed are super cool. The way I chose it is combining what I like with what I had around me that was good. For example I found a professor who was very talented in telecommunications, so I chose that

Watching this video made me sure that I want to pursue electrical engineering. I'm 17 going into my senior year and as a junior I decided I wanted to study electrical engineering. I had been experiencing a lot of doubt because teachers always say do what you love and you'll be fine but that really is not good advice. I love music but I know I can do electrical engineering, and music as a hobby. I know a career in electrical engineering will provide me with a stable future in order to do what I want to do in life. Your advice in this video is gold. I should be graduating high school with an associates in engineering and then transferring to a college to get a bachelors in electrical engineering. Since you are deep in your electrical engineering journey, I was wondering if you could answer a question I have been having. Does the college where I get my bachelors in electrical engineering matter? Will the college I get this degree in affect my ability to find a job down the road? My parents are not paying for my college and I really do not want to take out student loans. I am trying to find colleges that are affordable. I know scholarships and financial aid are options but I would rather keep my student debt low so I do not ruin my future, you know?

(copying and pasting a post of mine from reddit) I'm a 3rd year undergraduate in Electrical engineering. Here in Italy things are kinda different from abroad. The bachelor's degree lasts 3 years and then there's the master's degree that lasts 2 years (normally people in engineering go for the 3+2). There is also a big difference between Electrical and Electronics Engineering. These are two separated degrees: In the first you learn about mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical machines, some electronics, some automation and power systems In the second you learn about signals, systems, electronics, antennas, telecommunications, programming etc. I'm really interested in electrical vehicles, power electronics, electromagnetism in general and all of that electrical modern stuff like domotics and induction stoves. But i don't like electrical energy distribution systems, electrical implants at all. I would never want to create industrial electrical implants or join national electrical energy distributors, for me it feels like working on old stuff. Renewable Energy is a modern topic but i would not work on that because i prefer other things. So i have started thinking into switching from Electrical to Electronics. I want to finish my bachelor's degree, recover some exams and start a master in electronics. I will probably have to take a year to recover the exams to start the master with all the necessary knowledge, and I'm scared about that. I don't know the Electronics world that much (I don't know about the Electrical world either) but i know that it could get me nearer to ICT in general. I prefer that world and would like to work on drones, robots, consumer electronics (or at least i would prefer that form working on electrical implants and all of that industrial stuff). I would really like to also get nearer to software engineering, AI, ML, cybersecurity but I don't pretend to learn that stuff immediately. And also not to work specifically only on that stuff...i'm just curious. Like i would not like to be a Data Scientist, a front end developer even though you get lots of money doing that...i'd prefer to be an engineer that designs products for costumers. I would like to work on hardware stuff but also on some software, and so to have the freedom to move between the fields i prefer the most (electrical vehicles, robotics, drones, consumer electronics, ai, autonomous vehicles, domotics etc.). I just get a little bit scared about getting into a field i'm not prepared for, and also seeing my future colleagues more prepared that me. I'm not sure if I'm choosing right cause i don't really know the field i'm getting into...I'm choosing it because i don't feel to have other alternatives. I mean computer engineering is interesting but then you'll work only on software 100% , on the other hand you already know what i think about electrical engineering and power implants. Another problem of mine is that i wouldn't want to master electronics and then get my electrical engineering bachelor's degree discredited, so i could not get to work on the car's powertrain. But it is like the only part that i really like about my bachelor's, then i would prefer electronics. As you can see I'm kinda confused and I also blame myself a lot for losing time 'cause this is not even the first time i change (in my first year i have changed from mechanical to electrical). I'm looking for advice and encouragement.

I’m 20 years old and I’m seriously considering changing from a music major to an electrical engineering major. It’s not necessarily just for money. I want to go into the field because I find the idea of being an electrical engineer very intriguing. I want to be able to contribute to the world in a concrete way. I also love the idea of designing circuits and ultimately finding creative solutions for various problems. The only thing is that my math skills are subpar, mainly due to circumstances when I was in 9th grade. I missed out on the fundamentals of math, which is not great. I’ve been teaching myself a lot of what I missed though, and I’m definitely willing to put the work in, and then some. I just ultimately realized that being an audio engineer alone probably wouldn’t be a fulfilling path for me, and that the music program generally felt uninspiring. I still love music, and plan to mix and record songs regardless. I may even work on audio hardware, who knows? In any case, I still feel very behind. I took a gap year because I was so unfocused that I didn’t apply to colleges in time. Regardless, I’m going to do my best to succeed.

I sort of regret going the EET route, since all we lack is pretty much one physics class and two math classes compared to just a regular EE program. But this is a cheap state university and the only one who offered me any scholarships + financial aid. Right now they're having us use differential equations and concepts from Calculus 3 despite neither of those being prerequisites. Hey, I have a question that kinda has to do with something you were saying at the beginning of the video about making your school decision. Personally, I am not 100% set on a major but I am leaning towards electrical engineering right now. I got in to UIUC, NCSU, and Chapel Hill. Though Chapel is my favorite college, it doesn't have engineering so the idea of ditching engineering makes me cross it out. UIUC is top 5 for Electrical engineering, but it is very expensive at 60k a year (34k more than NC State). My parents are willing to pay my costs, however, its a large investment so I don't want to waste their money. Most people have told me to go to NCSU bc it has a really great engineering program at a lower cost than UIUC, do you agree? If I am to determine that engineering/electrical engineering isn't for me, I hope that I can transfer to a college like UNC and do something else. I feel like if I go to uiuc for 1-2 years and determine that engineering isn't for me, transferring will be a waste of 120k (and this isn't a realistic option)...
@alithedazzling
@alithedazzling Жыл бұрын
I would agree that NCSU would probably be better if its way cheaper -- that way less pressure on you and your parents. Also I went to a state school and that gave me freedom to be surrounded by other normal people and it just made college more fun. I think your intuition is right and you already know -- but if you want my blessing then go for it :-)
@Goat-qd4tj
@Goat-qd4tj Жыл бұрын
@@alithedazzling Yeah I chose NCSU. The reason I took so long is the competitive culture at my school, and I just wanted to go to uiuc/chapel to prove that I performed really highly in high school to family and peers. It does, however, makes me reconsider the significance of the amount of time I invested into studying for the SAT and getting a's.
