Such a lovely collection. I love these types of videos. Maybe we can see the Hoya next? 😏 As to calathea and your atabapoense, many plants, espec understory plants, have purple-red backs as a way to better absorb light! The purple helps to bounce the light back through the leaf so that it can better use it. Nature is so freaking cool, I just can’t.

Loved this video! For gloriosum, I've found that mine sized up really quickly when I gave it a long pot to crawl along. Since it was an increase in soil volume and I wanted to avoid rot, I modified my aroid mix to be even chunkier (70% bark) and it LOVES it. Ultimately I think it's just the size of the root mass that directly causes the large growth, so ensure that the growth points have access to chunky soil to root into (and you could air layer or mist the growth point to encourage rooting).
@sheryljacob27452 жыл бұрын
I agree! I put my Gloriosum in a longer, shallow pot that was too big for it's root system at the time but the next leaf it put out was massive compared to the previous ones

It really helps when anyone on KZbin mentions how a plant grows, especially with philodendrons. I thank you for that, one never knows when “excite” buying a plant how it grows, is it a crawler or a climber, useful information for the future of the plant. Some like to hang and some like to climb and when I spy a plant I really like I just buy it and then wonder later how it’s going to grow. ❄️💚🙃

I LOVE PHILODENDRON!!!💓💓💓. Love this video and you!💓💓. My favorite Philodendron is my parents' engagement gift,c59 year old cultivar. I chopped and propped it. She is a happy plant. No idea what she is. She had big solid heart shaped green leaves and woody looking Arial roots. She doesn't look or act like a hederacium. She was always known as Sweetie as they were told that she was a sweetheart Philodendron. 🤷🏼♀️. I love her whatever she is, much older than me. Thank you for this video🥰💖

I am back in the collecting stage, but my favorite is one I got from my Grandmother's collection 15 years ago. It's a large spade leaf Philodendron - possibly Fantasy or Domesticum (nobody can tell me exactly what it is) Leaves can get up to 8-9" long. I have just let it go for years and am now cutting and propogating. It's wonderful and so satisfying when it pops a new large leaf. I just purchased a large Philodendron Painted Lady that is very similar in size and structure - color is different, of course, but the overall look is similar.

I think those brown parts (edit - on the bunny eared philodendron) are extrafloral nectaries. The plant puts out sugar sap so that ants are incentivized to climb on it. It's a symbiotic relationship; the ants will eat any pests they come across and keep the plant healthy while the plant in turn provides food. I have a philodendron Maximum and they have the same extrafloral nectaries. I thought it was rot or disease or something until it was explained to me and referenced in a few videos on the plant.

From what I know about dark colored under leaves, many of these plants are on a forest floor. They don't have access to a ton of light always, hence why they thrive in bright indirect light. That being said they need to grab as much light as possible. Having a dark under leaf allows more light to to be absorbed rather than light passing through a lighter green.

my micans works so hard for me I admire her greatly, my newest green heartleaf is enjoying its spot in the window and my brasil that has journeyed the back half of my college career with me has been putting out some super fun looking leaves! some with more cream than anything else, some with just a sliver of dark green, and some with pink hues and very marbled colors, its honestly so cool

I love my mayoi--it's a slow grower but each leaf is stunning. I also really like my plain old Congo rojo, the combination of green leaves and red petioles is stunning. I've read that the dark red or purple on the backs of leaves reflects light that would normally go through the leaf back into the leaf, so that it can photosynthesize more light.

Dark tones on the back of plant leaves (stomata) actually refract light back onto the photosynthesising part of the leaves - this is why calathea are true "low-light" plants, they maximise whatever light energy hits their leaves. similar to how white variegation is a lack of chlorophyll that means the plant cant photosynthesis as well, the dark Stomata are the exact opposite, maximising photosynthesis

If you do use a plank, you don’t want to use treated wood. 💚 calathea actually have purple undersides to get the light better, from what bounces up off the ground. Since they are way under the understory on the floor. That’s why if you give them a lot of light they can actually lose their colored underside! They’re so cool. Love all your philos! They’re my favorite genus by far!
@flowergirllove212 жыл бұрын
I think your panduriforme is actually a bipennifolium. They tend to get easily mislabeled when smaller- but the juvenile pandu would actually have a more narrow leaf and more “pointy” lobes even in a small form. 💚 you can see how yours has almost “four” points on some of the leaves on the lobe area- which isn’t a trait of the pandu. I’ve been looking for a true form all over, definitely hard to find! Lol

@@BeccaDeLaPlants yes I agree! At first I was sad because mine only had 1 good growth point and most of my leaves are just that pretty dark green with little to no speckling. When when that new growth point came I got hope and it paid off! Hoping eventually when my plant is large enough I can separate. I think it would be super pretty to have them side by side in my plant room!

All of these are lovely 🥰 Philodendrons are definitely in my top three favorite plant categories ☺️ My micans seems to love my east facing window and fairly frequent waterings. And humidity! It’s always been right next to or very close to a humidifier. Went from ~6 leaves in August to three long vines, 2 of which are now on a large U-trellis (and one pinned into the pot to fill it out). Leaves still not nearly as big as your second specimen but she’s still doing great 👍🏾 My most recent acquisition was a jungle boogie and 🙌🏾, love him so much. I have many philodendron in my collection like mamei, gloriousum , mexicanium ,silver sword,subhastatum,bipennifolium,Brandi,congo,red emerald,ghost, and about ten more plus my vining ones. This type of plant has such a different look on all the plants and you just want to get all of them but space does run out as they get really big. I’m want to get some more strappy type plants rt now I think my genevievianum will give me a bit of that look one day as she gets bigger but I really want thinner type long leaves I’ve got a anthurium coming that I’m so excited to get with that look. hey becca! the dark/red undersides of the atabapoense leaf is to help reflect the desired wavelength of light back to the chlorophyll. same with the calathea as well! :) edit: also for the wood, i suggest you check out emma louise on youtube. she’s a (scottish?) youtuber who grows plants on wood planks and she air layers her plant every time it starts to exceed the pole. because the moment you propogate your plant and it has to push out/develop roots fro scratch, it will actually revert a bit. air layering helps you avoid that. i’m currently doing it with MY silver sword rn so that i can keep it mature 😍

Aren't those wooden plank boards too bulky and chunky? Wouldn't they make the entire pot top heavy and more likely to topple over? Why not just use a bamboo pole to stake you your plants? That would save a lot more space

Plants on planks are a whole other thing 😌

I feel like the way she has the wood placed, kind of balanced on the pot, plus the stakes stuck in the actual soil, is helping with it being “top-heavy.” I have a couple plants that I have simple wooden stakes in (along the lines of a paint stirrer but it’s actually a small, pointed wooden post for like a playhouse gate (goodwill lol) and they are a bit unbalanced - mostly because of their height and of how I put them in the pot though, so I wish I had taken this tactic tbh Plants on planks is definitely a thing rn and I believe the thinking is that bamboo poles or even a simple wooden stake are fine too for support but don’t give enough surface area for the plant to really grab onto. Even with my dollhouse stakes I’m only able to run a single vine up each side (cebu blue for instance)

The planks are a bit top heavy but as others have said, they’re staked down into the pot and at this point the pot is heavier than the wood so it doesn’t topple over :) most of my planks lean against a wall anyway. And the wood is so that the aerial roots can adhere to it and grow big leaves!
