You cut so deep into that top stringer to place it inside the deck. Are you not worried about it? I am presently in the process of building deck stairs, but I think I'll still surface mount it. Only problem is I'll have to add another ledger piece under the rim band as the stringers fall short. That might look bad. Lots of things to consider on these deck builds...

You're gonna be a great building channel. I think you could get away with not even bothering to pick any background music too - you're entertaining / informative enough without any music. Wish you the best! Now...go make more videos! :)

KZbin compresses the audio in a way I wasn't use to. Took me a few tries, but the newer videos should have it resolved.

I'm a female and I'm going to try and do it myself but I am cheating and buying 4 or 5 stringers I'm not sure what I need yet all I know is the stairs are horrible in back to me very unsafe to narrow not wide enough won't let my grandchildren use them and my husband was never taught nothing as a child or teen his dad died as a little boy mom shortly after brothers didn't teach him shit and he has o patience and I mean o patience my dad taught me alot thru my years as a child and a adult so I am going to attempt this on my own

I felt the same way. After talking with some local builders in my area that do this they "assured" me it would be fine since I set the 12 inches on center. Only time will tell. I do perform a spring inspection every year looking for splitting or signs of weakness. It's not always the best way, just another way.

I like the way you did the stairs, attaching them behind the deck, also 2 2x4 at the bottom for staggered anchoring. Going to have to start using that method it looks a lot more secure.

I like that idea too however you need to be careful that you maintain your rise for every step otherwise you will have unsafe steps. For example if your rise is 7 inches with tread and your rim joist is 2 x 8 which is nominally 7 1/4 you will need to put a 1/4" notch into the top of the stringer so the end result is 7 inch rise for the top step.

Excellent, but I'm curious why you didn't just attach the platform to the posts instead of first attaching the cross members to the posts and then sitting the platform on top of that...? You'd use higher posts for that, of course, but it eliminates a step and would have the same structural integrity. Or so it seems to me. Thanks

Music is way too loud. It’s annoying do you have to turn the volume up and down when the music kicks in so that it’s not loud for everyone else in the house that’s trying to sleep. Also definitely not my choice of music but whatever

I have a small home and need a compact stair case that allows us to go up stairs. Our current stairs are super narrow and has broken treads all the way up. I want to change it to a wider set of stairs with a smaller footprint. Thoughts?

Very nice content but I had to stop watching half way because of the annoying background music drowning out your words and the start of some sections seemed to be triple the volume of your dialogue. The absolute best videos I have seen have ZERO crap music.

you did good on this except your stinger material you should not have less than 5.5 inches of material remaining on teh heal edge if you have less than that it is always recommended to put a 2x6 runner on them to add extra support ..But I suggest using and most building codes require 2x12 for your stingers .. on your stingers you should add on the inside a 2x6 runner to add more support .. other than that you did pretty good and you can go with the material you used every 16 inches and any thing that contacts Concrete should always be Treated lumber

I see why you cut the top of your stringers like that as it makes it easy to attach them to your deck but it leaves you with very little wood to support the load. I would be concerned that once that treated lumber dries out, you are going to get cracking along the grain and possible failure down the road. I mount my stringers to the face, screw in from behind and then block between them and screw in from the side. Our runs are usually a bit longer than yours but don't underestimate the loss of integrity that treated lumber experiences over time. I have yet to be able to reuse a full set of stringers when replacing wood decks with composite. They always split along the grain.

Thank you for the advice. I will keep an eye out for splitting. I saw the idea from another contractor and loved the idea. But you are correct that there isn’t a lot of “meat” left on the stringer.

Just curious if the blocking you added to the stringers replaces the need for strong backs on the side of the stringers? I love the way you connected the upper stringers to the deck. I've never seen that before. Also I'm curious if you have or plan to have a video on how to properly install a handrail.

I can’t take the credit for the way I attached it. I saw another KZbinr do it and thought it looked way stronger than what I had originally planned. This summer I have plans to do a follow-up video of the deck where I will put in the hand rail, and address some other things I wish I did differently.

Noticed you added a slope to the concrete pad. Did you also slope the deck? I’ve read so many conflicting views on whether a deck with composite boards (with gaps in between boards) should be sloped or not. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I did not slope the deck. I too saw many mixed reviews, and decided to keep it level. My thoughts on this, the composite boards I have already have a slight curve that will help push the water to the sides. Any water that does hang out, it’s going to do nothing to the composite boards.

I was always under the impression that screws have much lower shear strength than nails, but I see you are using screws for structural components, many of which will experience significant sheer, where I would typically expect nails, such as joist hanger nails. What types of screws are you using in this case? I assume it is like a high strength structural screw?

You're right about the sheer strength, the screw will lose everytime. There was a shortage of materials when I built the deck so it was tough getting nails. I opted for construction screws. With the amount of screws going in each hanger, im not too worried about them breaking. Plus my area stays pretty dry year round so there isn't much wood movement. I would have definitely preferred nails though, those screws added so much time to the project.

A little trick I learned in my previous work. If you file threaded bolts or rod after cutting with a portable bandsaw, you can get a nut on it.

I'm at the point of adding my stairs to the deck I'm building. How did you determine where the piers for the landing go?

When I did the math for the stairs, I knew my runs would be 10 inches, and wanted the landing to be 4 steps down. So with that I knew how far away the landing needed to be. But I did wait to attach my landing to the beams until after I cut the stingers just in case there was any slight movement I needed to make.

The way you did your upper set of stringers was awesome. Alot of deck stairs and hand railing fail over time because they aren't mounted inside the box joist like you did. Very good tip.

Yes it should. When I purchased the lumber we were in the thick of the wood shortage a couple years ago, and we couldn’t get pressure treated lumber. Before I built the deck I sealed every board in my garage, and every spring I go out and re-coat them.

What dimension lumber are you using?

I was using 2x8' for the majority, and 2x12' for the stair stringers. If you look up the spanning tables, you can see what size is needed for the span you are shooting for.

Afraid I would mess up my measurents, I waited till I had the frame up on the deck before I determined where my posts went for the landing. From there I used a stair calculator the determine where each step would be, and measured out from the deck. Knowing the run of each stair I new how far out the landing would go.

Actually, your video was pretty good except the pad portion which you could and should have edited out. I never once suggested you quit making video's so don't come at me with that but I would have replaced that pad and finished it properly. Show some respect for the trade. If I did a deck video and put and nasty knotted up board right in the middle of the deck, I would expect carpenters to criticize me :) You do you man....like I said it was a good deck video but the pad could have been left on the cutting room floor :) Nothin personal
