For social anxiety, I still think a ESD is great. Yes, people are looking but you at least you know why. And that is a huge help! I don't know about other people, but for me, talking about my dog, is probably the least stressful thing I can think of (when talking to people), especially if she's there with me! So much easier than small talk chit chat crap, and I can never seem to come up with anything to say at that exact moment. Anyways, it's kinda like you don't get so stuck in your head if you have your fur child because you have to keep an eye on them, making sure their already, always. :)

Just saying an ESA is not a service dog so you can't take them to public places (schools,stores.etc). Service dogs only have public access,the only places ESA'S can go is into a housing place that doesn't allow pets and airplane flights. But no hate,I'm just giving you a tip!! I have a service dog for ptsd,panic attacks, and anxiety. If your PTSD is very bad you can get a service dog,only if it is really bad.

Although you are correct about ESA not being allowed in public places, I think they are talking about the ESA and living on campus/dorms. That's why they mentioned housing. So, while they couldn't bring their ESA to class, they are trying to get approval for housing only.

I've been to a few therapists, I'm currently seeing one now, I've talked to her a few times now. I'm also seeing a doctor who prescribed Zoloft for Anxiety, Depression, and PTSD. I've been told by a couple others who have ESAs to wait until near the end of the school year (I'm in college) to wait so they can get to know me more and I don't sound eager to get a dog just so I can have a dog. Do people with ESAs take medication or is the animal itself considered a prescription?
@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
Hi. Depending on the doctor and patient, a variety of different and/ or a combination of therapies/treatments may be used. For example, a doctor may try change medications or may use medications in conjunction with one another. Same can be said with using cognitive/behavioral therapy with medication. So, a doctor may agree with using medication along with the aid of a support animal.

I just have a few questions.... I have a 5 month old Aussipom. Who is currently a HUGE help to me, mentally. I understand ESA’s don’t have public access rights... but what if you NEED emotional support in order to go into a store and buy things and be able to talk to people about what you need. I guess my main question is, what if you would need the assistance of the dog in heavily crowded areas. Small settings don’t bother me, but Wal-Mart, festivals, etc... how would I go about training him? What are the costs on that? Would I be able to????

@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
Are you able to explain to them in detail how your cat comforts you, and in what situations you would need him/her? Maybe if you present a log of examples, that might help. Be persistent. It is your mental health, and at the end of the day, if you feel this would be beneficial for you, you need to be able to get what you need to be healthy. I had to give very specific examples of when I felt I needed Coco. Also, she asked how Coco's temperament was, and how she was around people and new situations (I was flying with her).

Dog Paw Blog I've actually told both my psychiatrist and therapist that my cat helps me calm down and sleep at night, since I get mild anxiety attacks during the night. And that Aries gives me a routine, which I HAVE to follow because he has to eat so I can't just stay in bed when my depression is acting up. I told my therapist this again during our last session and she simply said to tell the psychiatrist again so she could refer me to someone who can. Hi, thank you for watching. It's a little more than that. First, your depression would need to impact one or more major life activities (work, school, self care etc), in order for your doctor (licensed mental health professional) to declare you disabled by your condition. Next, they would need to agree/recommend that an emotional support animal would be a beneficial part of your ongoing treatment. Then they would write the letter.

I am supposed to be getting a dog soon as an ESA. My psychiatrist has already written the letter for me, stating how it will greatly benefit me. She did it with no problem, and thought it was a good idea. I have questions though. What breed of dog would you suggest? I am going to be living in a dorm and I don’t want a massive dog, but even a large dog that is okay with indoors would work. I will be walking to class and this allows me to walk them daily. What would you suggest? Should I get the dog at the beginning of summer to build a bond? Or wait until the end?
@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
Hi. Picking a dog is so subjective. Decisions can be based on your personality, energy level, and lifestyle. Also, you need to look into if you would like a puppy, adult, or senior dog. Will grooming/shedding be a problem? Different breeds have different temperaments and genetic health issues. My suggestion would be to take a few breed quizzes. That should help you figure out what type of dog may suit you best. From there, seriously look into researching the care of the specific kind of dogs you're interested in. If you are able to obtain the dog before you move into the dorm that may be a good idea. It will allow more time to establish a routine and bond. Also, you can see if there are any training/behavioral issues you need to address before moving into the dorm (barking, chewing, house breaking). Good luck! Let me know how it works out

Hi, in the U.S. only service dogs are covered with public access. If you feel you require help outside the house, you may want to speak with your mental health provider, and see if they would approve a service dog. If you are limited in one or more major life activities by a mental health condition (anxiety/panic attacks), you would qualify as disabled and may benefit from a psychiatric service dog. Check out psychdogpartners.org for more info. hope that helps.

Yes, I wouldn’t get a large dog (that you may not be able to keep at your new place) without the letter first. Ok just a brief question, in the video you mentioned don't use the .com sites online because they can't provide proof etc. So where can I take my dog or what legal sites can I use to get her the proper paperwork or things required? I understand the part that I need a letter from my doctor but is that it or is there some type of registration process needed once I obtain the letter? Thank you very much
@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes, all you need is the letter from your doctor. However, make sure what the airline requires to be included in the letter is stated in what your doctor is writing. The airlines state specific things they need to be in the letter, which you can find on their website. You do not need to register/certify your dog through an online website. Some people like to have the ID tag and certificate, but that is not what the airline will accept for travel. If you need information about no-pet housing, I recommend you check your local housing laws for requirements. I am not familiar with housing laws, just flying with an ESA.

Hi. I am not familiar with the requirements for fair housing ( I live in pet-friendly housing). One thing to keep in mind, if your dog bites, you could face legal issues if there is any injury or report made. The letter/ ESA status wouldn’t exempt you. See if you are able to find the legislation in your state regarding fair housing in regards to keeping an ESA.

Is it possible to register your own dog as an ESA (I suffer from anxiety and selective mutism meaning I cannot talk to people and when approached or spoken too I go into panic attacks, freezes or unconsciously dig my nails into my hands ) however when I take my dog out she makes me feel safe and somewhat able to accept the presences of people as I know she's there to protect me and make the situation less awkward (she's incredible well behaved however attacks a lot of attention with people wanting to pet her and stroke and approach her)
@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
Hi. In the video, I mention to stay away from the online certificates and registrations. They do not provide the legal proof for esa. For flying, you need a letter written by a mental health care professional that is currently treating you. Esa also are not granted public access. So, if you need your dog to go with you more places than in an airplane cabin or no pet housing, then you should look into a psychiatric service dog. If your dog is trained to perform tasks that mitigate your anixiety and selective mutism, then they will have public access.

There is no requirement for training for an ESA. That is why they do not have public access. If you feel your dog would be beneficial to you in public, you may want to look into training him to be a psychiatric service dog. If I took my ESA on a plane, and someone was seriously allergic, could I be held liable? Could someone decide to put my ESA to sleep if another person had an allergic reaction? Thank you.
@DogPawBlog8 жыл бұрын
Hi, on a plane if someone is allergic, they can request to move to another seat. In regards to service dogs, which are granted public access with their disabled handlers, they are considered medical equipment and cannot be denied due to another's fear or allergies. If someone is that severely allergic, they likely know it, and carry an epi pen/other medication. To be fair, they could still have the reaction because of any fur/dander on your clothing, even without the presence of the dog. Your ESA can go to no-pet housing and fly in cabin with you and you are protected by fair housing and air carrier access act respectively.
@alnthevalley18 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Storm anyone may bring a lawsuit to anyone for any reason, they may or may not win, that is to be determined in court-however, and ESA is only allowed in housing that would otherwise prohibit dogs and or when flying- no other public places unless dogs are allowed to the general public unlike a Service Animal- which is all access- and you must maintain your therapy in order to maintain your ESA status, if you no longer go to therapy then your status ends as well-

Hi. I’m so sorry, I am just now seeing your comment. You could ask your therapist if they are familiar with esa’s and start the conversation that way. They will likely ask you why you feel it would be beneficial to you. It may vary state to state, but the general rule is only service dogs accompanied by their handler are allowed public access. Esa are allowed in the cabin of an airplane and in no-pet housing. You may always call ahead and ask permission, but they have the right to say no.

It is easier if it’s a dog you already know. That way you already know its temperament and training level. If you don’t have one now, you could rescue/adopt and begin with basic training and manners. You don’t want your dog to bark excessively or damage any property

can u tack a emotional support dog in a store
@DogPawBlog8 жыл бұрын
Legally, you can only take them into pet-friendly stores. ESA's do not have public access like service dog teams do.

I'm going to college next fall. My dog has really helped me with my anxiety and stress, and mild depression in high school. Would my dog be allowed to be in my on campus dorm if I register him as a esa?
@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
Remember do not use the online registrations. Check with your university residential life and disability office. They have certain requirements, and those vary with each college. Even then, your esa can only be in the dorm with you, not in other buildings.

where do i register my dog?
@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you were able to watch the whole video, but registration is not needed. You need to be diagnosed with a mental disability then prescribed and ESA from a mental health professional that is currently treating you. Airlines need the letter, that is all. They will not accept those online certificates and vest.

Hi can u get an esa for anxiety?
@DogPawBlog6 жыл бұрын
Yes

Okay so if I have paranoia, anxiety and hallucinations And my dog helps me but she has problems with potty training (she's kinda slow at getting it. shes incredibly hard to train)
@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
You would need the letter from your mental health provider. While ESA's do not legally have training standards, it is a good idea that they have basic obedience and are housebroken. You would not want the pup to soil in an apartment or on a plane. Keep working with her on the housebreaking, and be patient- kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGeTmGeajdOUh6M

Do you know if certapet is legit? I no longer see my therapist.
@DogPawBlog6 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry, I’m not familiar with it. Even your primary care physician can write the letter, since you are no longer seeing your therapist

Some places have signs that say “service dogs welcome”. I know ESAs are not service dogs but do you think places like that would allow you to bring the dog in?
@DogPawBlog6 жыл бұрын
Esa’s do not have public access like service dogs do. You may ask if you can bring your esa in however, but they may tell you no

I have recenlty been diagnosed with really bad depression. Where I don't leave the house etc..... my dog is my ESA. Does school allow ESA ?
@DogPawBlog7 жыл бұрын
It depends on the school. Compulsory schools do not, but if you are referring to college/university, you would need to check with disability services and residential life. The ESA would only be considered for residing with you in a dorm, but not going to classes, etc.

ESAs do not have public access. They can room with you but they cannot go into other buildings or classes with you.

gaby oseguera I believe they can deny you but they CANNOT deny a service dog

gaby oseguera I think they should because suppression could lead to hurting YOUR self in school

service dogs have access to all public places except for surgical room and burn units, but other places in the hospital they are allowed. ESA are not allowed in classrooms unless your school allows it. ESA only have the privilege to live in no housing zones and are allowed to fly. That is all they have. My service dog is allowed to go places with me because he does tasks that help me live safe and independent.

@DogPawBlog8 жыл бұрын
Hi, I am not as familiar with no pet housing in regards to esa/service dog laws. From the reading I did, while it is not required, many see it as a good idea in case something happens.
