As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee thought her country was "the best on the planet." It wasn't until the famine of the 90s that she began to wonder. She escaped the country at 14, to begin a life in hiding, as a refugee in China. Hers is a harrowing, personal tale of survival and hope -- and a powerful reminder of those who face constant danger, even when the border is far behind.

What's worse is that the families of those who do get out are often tortured, imprisoned, and even killed. Not just immediate family, but even extended family. To make you think long and hard about whether your freedom means enough to sacrifice the lives oof so many others. Her talk gives no details, but I'm sure she experienced many unspeakable things. She's afraid to talk in case she still has other family there who could be hurt, or bc she doesn't want to lose her composure. There's one guy who escaped north Korea who didn't speak up for many years bc his sister was still there and he didn't want her punished bc of him. After she went crazy in prison there (God only knows what they did to her!) and was released bc she is now like a child mentally, he began talking about the atrocities going on there.

She just made me realize I have absolutely no right to complain about all my stupid problems, they're literally nothing. (Edit: Guys, I didn't say my problems don't matter at all. Obviously we all have problems and they're not irrelevant. I said I don't have the right to complain about all my stupid problems, like getting too much homework or having to get up too early in the morning, etc. Compared to this, those are nothing. Nobody likes getting too much homework, but it's really not that bad. Some people are in way worse situations than I am, and instead of complaining about these small things, we should be grateful for what we have. For example I often complain about the smallest things, but in reality I have a family, a house to live in, enough food, I can go to school, I don't have to fear for my own or my loved ones' lives, and compared to others I have a really good life. Obviously I have my own problems just like everyone else does, and they do matter, but I shouldn't complain about all those small things that I find slightly uncomfortable. I hope you could understand what I was trying to say and I hope you have a nice day💜)

It's so strange, because when I was little, I lived in Dalian, a Chinese state so close to North Korea that I could see the cities on the other side of the river. I was only five, and I find it so shocking knowing that a country that was suffering so much was right under my nose.

Maddie Mohos Dalian is not a state but a city of Liaoning province of China. I don't think it could be North Korea you saw on the other side of the sea since Dalian is not that closed to North Korea. The city you saw on the otherside of the sea was probably Yantai, which is a city of Shandong province. Dandong , another city of Liaoning province, is the one she was talking about. There is a river called Yalujiang on the border and actually I used to be there once. A lot North Koreans are livng and working there illegally with Chinese families' help. I am very sorry for her but I can't agree that it sounds like Chinese fault to send them back to their own country. I know they are poor and the government can't be worse, but it's not anyone's responsibility to help. We can help but we don't have to. You can't blame people for not help these illegal immigrants.

In her book she says that her father forced her to learn Chinese characters growing up. She said it saved her life because when she was trapped in China she had to learn Mandarin to survive, and so she had a head start because she knew a lot of the characters. She also couldn’t leave her Aunt and Uncles house without them until she learned, for fear of being caught because she didn’t know the language, so she dedicated her life to studying the language for quite a while so that she could leave the house on her own safely.

My friend from school escaped from North Korea when she was two. She made it to the border of China when (according to her mother) she fell down and started crying. Her mother was afraid they would get caught and did what she had to do. She covered her mouth with a napkin until she stopped crying and was on the verge of passing out from lack of oxygen. Her mother then carried her the next 10 miles to people in China who got them on a flight to the US. The flight was to ship dogs to a shelter in Maine. So her and her mother were inside a giant crate holding about ten small puppy dogs, a big bag of food and one of those water bottle things that hamsters have. The flight was 20 hours because they had to stay in the crate for an extra while until it was unlocked. The pilot of the plane (an American) was shocked, but after sharing their story, agreed not to tell anyone. He even gave my friend one of the puppies that didn’t find a shelter. Her mom had a friend in Maine who escaped before and was the one who contacted the people in China to arrange for helping them sneak onto the flight. They lived together a while before my friend and her mom could live by themselves. Now she’s in my school, and everyone loves hearing her story.

@@youtubecomments5951 what is a fairy tale? The story in the video or the Torah/Bible/Qur'an. If it is the latter then don't say that because you may start an argument.

Macaroon_Nuggets obviously I was talking about the pass to heaven. Like all religions are either fairy tale like or evil. But all the same. Just bullshit

Just bcoz we have some privileges unlike NK , that doesn't mean we back off from achieving our rights . Even if we have freedom doesn't mean we should stop fighting for what we deserve ."NK doesn't even have this " isn't an proper excuse. We should concentrate on both things. We should be grateful for having a good country as home and at the same time try to get your human and fundamental rights , coz that is what going to make you country a better place to live in. It should not happen that in feeling grateful for having just few rights for yourself in comparison to NK, u forget u- as a human have rights too. Just bcoz someone has less rights , doesn't mean u shouldn't be complaining . Be content with what u have , but if u have rights on anything ( for good) then don't leave it.
