@@conor7154 as a dropout software engineer I can tell you that isn't the only path. Then again, also software engineering isn't for everyone. But there are plenty of technical fields in which some of this stuff hardly matters at all. Then again, a soulless corporate job doesn't use much your humanities education anyways. There definitely is value in humanities education, but its cultural enrichment, not as a skill for a regular office job where you are giving customer service, writing emails or analyzing data.

It created a totalarian psychology between subjects, I've quadded quotas at businesses. I know who my boss is, I can remember the first time I opened my eyes. While I haven't joined yet, the community may be the biggest selling point for me. The self-selection of people who are intellectually curious and motivated to learn for learning's sake is I think quite special, and this is actually helped by the lack of accreditation. Assuming it's as valuable as I imagine, I hope it can be maintained as the user-base grows (this will likely be challenging).

I think that Peterson is genuine and trying to do good work by providing useful content for the students. But accreditation is essential and I would wait for that before taking part. Having been through grad school at a big Toronto univeristy and now doing my PhD, I can say that there are certainly big advantages to being at such an institution. I hope that the PA can build up to a brick and mortar institution.

Well, that's good. It sounds kinda like the pitch JBP had for this was essentially: what if I had a whole university that had courses that were basically what UT let me do with Maps of Meaning? I reserve my scepticism, but it's good to hear the product itself seems to be working as intended - the quizzes working seems to me to be a miracle. If you don't mind me asking, what were you studying prior? And do you feel that what you're covering is making you more employable?
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
I was studying Psychology, and I have found personally that I learned more from 1 course in Peterson Academy than I did my entire year at university taking 9 classes. Keep in mind I went to a very liberal Canadian university, so my experience may vary from what other universities are providing. I personally love the structure of letting the professors teach what they want, but I do understand the skeptism. There will definitely be more bias when you do it that way. However, I find it to be more engaging, and I find I learn more when the professor is teaching what and how they want to teach. Baring, they remain honest and true, of course. Thanks for commenting :)

I am more interested in the aspects of a university education generally considered ancillary to hard "employability" oriented curricula- Broadening horizons in thought, refinement of expression and articulation skills, rhetoric and the like. For employability, I look to professional education, certification courses and trade schools. I look forward to seeing diversity in educators, rather than institutional bias toward narrative and ideology. Why is it that Americans always waste so much time apologizing over a surname that they are not familiar with? I'm Filipino and I pronounce names the way Filipinos would. Don't be scared of offending people too much. This is the global village age. Nobody should get offended if their name is anglicized. It's fine.

I don't know... if you watch my Top 50 WW2 Films video I BUTCHER some names really badly and I kind feel bad lol. I totally agree with your sentiment tho. thanks for commenting :)
@NicooRicoАй бұрын
It's generally because we pride ourselves on speech and also our inclusiveness. Knowing that names, especially last names carry much of ones honor of family we tend to be as respectful as we can by pronouncing it properly. For if we don't take the time and carefulness to pronounce their name right it seems as if we are arrogant and their family's honor was not to be respected in the first place. It's not a cognizant thought that we think but understanding American people we truly do want to ensure everyone is accepted and feels as if they can share who they are as we accept them as who they are. At least the real Americans who understand and uphold our ideals.
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
Very well written, thank you. I really hope I didn't offend anyone with my horrible pronunciations. I would have had to memorize over 200 names for this video if I took the time to actually pronounce them all properly. Maybe in the future when I'm doing the channel full time I can take the time to remake this video with the correct pronunciation of names but for now I just hope I put people onto some good movies. :)

I haven't enrolled yet, but I'm considering it. What I want to know is how easy or difficult it is to get in touch with any of the teachers / lecturers? I am someone who typically asks a lot of questions, and the ability to get personal feedback from the experts teaching each course sounds like an incredibly valuable opportunity. I understand that there is a growing community of somewhat like-minded individuals who share a drive for learning and exploring new ideas. Getting answers from other members in that community is certainly an option. That being said, I've already completed a Bachelor's Degree from a "traditional" University, and the best part of my journey was the ability to talk to the professors in person, ask questions, explore topics further, etc. So if there is a way to do the same with Peterson Academy, that may just be the little "push" I need to enroll. I'm looking forward to your feedback on this! (Otherwise, good job with the video! In the end, whether PA provides accreditation or not has nothing to do with the value you gain from participating in it (in my opinion). People often like to see "value" in a tangible way, but I believe the knowledge being acquired and the journey you've undertaken already holds a lot of value in and of itself. Life is short. Curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge can lead you to take part in the most interesting and fulfilling adventure!)
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
Love this comment, and thank you for taking the time to write it. I completely agree with the last bit there 👏🏻 👍🏻 well said. To answer your question, unfortunately you can't ask professors questions at the moment. One feature a lot of students are clamoring for is a Q&A section where we can pose questions to professors and have them answered when the professors have the time. Another alternative could be a GPT trained on the professors course and books. Perhaps this can adequately replace the role of the professors to answer questions, but obviously, not everyone will like having an A.I. answer their questions. Ultimately, I want the professors to answer our questions themselves even if they can only answer 1-3 questions a week it would be incredibly helpful. I will be emailing the academy soon to get more information on this issue, I'll update you when I have more information. Thank you again for the comment :)

Thank you for providing this valuable service. I'm delighted to hear that your experience has justified the hype. Two questions for you. In brick and mortar institutions, lecture courses are invariably accompanied by an assigned textbook and or assigned readings and often times very extensive readings. This is highly valuable because it exposes students to academic writing in a field, different perspectives on a topic, and greater material than can be covered in lectures. Do Peterson Academy courses assign readings? My second question concerns course concentrations by discipline. Will it be possible to pursue a concentration in economics, psychology, philosophy, or political science -- to name a few. And are programs of study suggested for those wishing to pursue concentrations?
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the amazing comment, to adress your 2 questions. 1- Unfortunately, there is only suggested reading, and it is presented in the form of the 3 recommended books for each course. 2- I have no value information on concentrations yet, I assume once they have enough courses realsed then they will derive unique degrees and focused plans for students who want to specialize in history, psychology, economics ect. I hope this helped. Unfortunately, I don't have all the information I'd like to right now, I will reach out to Peterson Academy and see if they can provide me with any more details. He also stated he's interested in having annual (if not more frequent) conventions where 5-10 professors come to major cities, and over a weekend, you have seminars with these professors to ask questions and learn. @joanamarch8847 Great question! I do know that there are a lot of people from around the world on the Academy already, and I know they have somewhere close to 50,000 students now. Love your content! New sub. As an educator in higher education and a lifelong learner, I'm cautiously optimistic about Peterson's aspirations for this platform, and reserve any final judgment until the full version is released. I think my main issues are the: 1. Lack of acceditation (but not a big deal for me since I would only use this platform for personal enrichment) 2. Lack of readings integrated with the lectures. 3. Lack of essays. 4. The short length of the "courses." A typical college course meets for three hours a week, and subtracting time for in-class assignments, discussions, and wasted time, Peterson's courses come up around 75% shorter. 5. Rigor of assessment. I think the site does mention that essays will be forthcoming, but overall what are your thoughts about these above points?
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
Well, thank you for the amazing comment to address your points. 1 - Lack of accreditation is something I worry about as well, although my primary goal and the goal of a lot of students is to learn regardless of the awarding of a degree. However, Dr. Peterson has stated in 2 recent podacsts that he has a couple of institutions interested in accreditation. So I'm still hopeful for that to come. 2. Yes, I agree that only 3 recommend books is not nearly enough, at least for me. I would like to see 5-10 recommended books per course 3. Agreed, I need to have written portions on the final exams in order to feel validated that I've learned the material correctly. 4. As far as the length of the courses go, I have to disagree somewhat. I was initially skeptical at the course lengths but after taking 6 courses and I can confidently say that due to the quality of the professors, editing and the focused nature of all the lectures they actually can provide 20-30 lectures worth of content in just 8 or 9 lectures. With no interruptions from students, no teachers having off or slow days. Everything runs so smoothly that you look at how traditional universities do it, and you wonder how it became so inefficient. Keep in mind that that is my personal experience and read of it. You may feel differently, but I'm been super impressed with the lectures so far. I hope this helped, thanks for commenting. :)

@@DeepThought8899 No, thank you for an equally insightful comment! Seeing as I haven't seen any courses, hearing about your experience with it helps assuage some of my questions! Great review! Although, as a musician, I cringed at the thought of anyone listening to music appreciation videos sped up.😱 Hopefully, you switched to 1x speed when the teacher played examples, because the speed (tempo) of music is as important as the notes, rhythms, and harmonies. (Find the KZbin video of your all-time favorite song and listen to it at 1.5x -- it completely changes the feeling of the music.) I do have a question... Do you know if the accreditation is expected to be retroactive? Will the courses you've already taken give you credit toward a degree?
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
Oh, of course I played it at 1x for the music portions lol, that would be sin not to. And yes, they will be retroactive according to Dr. Peterson, so take as many you want. My only concern is the final exams not being out and potentially forgetting what I learnt, but luckily you can watch the lectures as much as you want, the quizzes on the other hand you can only take once but you can look back on your quiz results which is nice. Love the look and sound of the Peterson academy, for me it would just be to learn, accreditation isn’t important for me. Just out of interest though, why do you personally feel you need the paper? What’s your intimate goal? And does that goal require it. Best wishes😊
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
I don't need a paper to be graded, really, I write many essays on my own time for my own satisfaction however I would like my written work to be reviewed by those who understand the subjects more deeply than I do. I've written many papers on Nietzsche, yet I've never anyone who understands Nietzsche read them and to get some feedback from someone like Dr. Peterson would help me validate my understanding. Not that I think Dr. Peterson is the final authority on Nietzsche, I just know he's spent more time than I have examining his works. Hope this helped, and thanks for commenting :)

Hi, I'm really interested in the social network aspect and meeting with other students is there anything more you can say about what uses you see for it or how people are using it? Especially: -What is the interface like? How easy is it for people discuss topics/courses and help each other understand things? -I think with ThinkSpot people have the ability to leave comments at any particular point in a video, thus adding commentary, is the anything like that? -Any sense of the age range of the students? I'm 35 and optimistic that there will be a good range of ages and I wont be the old guy but I still worry... -Do you see people trying to form informal study groups that meet/discuss courses virtually or in person? Thanks.
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
Hi! To address your questions. The interface is beautiful and well designed, in my opinion. You can leave comments on the lectures that will time code to where you are in the video so you can comment on things the professor said, and other students can comment on your comment. The social tab is the general media space, and the timeline is chronological, I believe. You can post photos, like posts, comment on posts, and soon you will be able to @ people as well. I see it being used for course discussion mainly and also for organizing local study groups like you said. As far as I can tell the average age is probably around 35 actually, I'm finding alot of older people even people with degrees already who are taking it purely to learn, but the community is friendly and respectful. Unless you go to college to be an engineer, college is a total waste. Anything besides engineering that you could learn in college is also in Peterson academy for 1% of the cost, and, let's be honest, no degree outside of engineering is worth the paper it's printed on. PA is a much better alternative for people who would just like to learn the humanities.

Major - no, it is a general arts degree currently, maybe eventually there will be majors but currently you study whatever course you are interested in. Graduation - I don't know yet. The professors sometimes comment on the social platform, but currently, no. Perhaps in the future that will be an option but the professors they have are such high level people and there's so many students (over 30,000) that I'm not sure that will ever be a feature. Thank you for your reply. This is unrelated to the video, but I’ve been getting into Jung for a while now and finally started reading one of his books. I chose Man and His Symbols, which I don’t regret. I’m almost finished with the first part, the one he wrote himself, and I had a thought last night that I wanted to share with you to hear your perspective. Although the core of human experience has remained constant through the ages, the language we use to describe it has shifted. What was once called an “evil spirit” in 1 Samuel 16:14 might today be labeled “paranoia.” Yet, in modernizing our terminology, something vital seems to have been lost. Our language, though clinically precise, often feels detached and sterile, lacking the depth and emotional resonance of ancient expressions. It may be that the older, more primitive language, with its vivid symbolism, was better aligned with the human psyche, offering a richer, more meaningful connection to our inner experiences. Perhaps, in our pursuit of scientific clarity, we’ve sacrificed something essential to our mental and emotional well-being. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Sure, the possibility of the Academy eventually getting accredited and getting a Bachelors degree is alluring, but it's not the main sell for me, I'm attending primarily to learn as much as possible. I'm just sharing my experiences, so do what feels best for you. Hope this helped. Thanks for commenting. :)

@@DeepThought8899 Thanks for answering :) Some people are definitely better at learning while watching rather than reading. And don't stress too much about your degree, I finished college close to reaching my 40s after dropping out in my 20s. Finishing it when you're older is even better because you know what you want to study and what you're passionate about. I studied psychology and Peterson was an inspiration to get me started. 12 rules for life got me through a hard time. Right now it's difficult seeing him like this, paranoid and supporting a Russian puppet,. This was another lesson he taught I guess, differentiate between the author and his past work.

Well, thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it alot. As far as Dr. Peterson being paranoid and suporting a "Putin Puppet" you have to explain that more for me to understand what you're getting at. I completely agree with the sediment of separating the art from the artists, tho not enough people are capable of that these days it seems. Thanks for commenting :)

@@DeepThought8899 It's mostly related to US politics, how he fully supports Trump now v=l0zxgXgLlJo even though one of his rules in that book is "Tell the truth - or, at least, don't lie." where he spends an entire chapter explaining the importance of telling the truth. I don't think any other politician has lied as much as Trump did in the history of US. That's just one of the many fundamental defects Trump has (such as a lack of moral code) that are not in line with anything Peterson believed or has written about. Regarding the 'puppet', it is well known that he blocked support to Ukraine for months, being unwilling to say anything negative about the wanted criminal Putin while comparing Zelenskyy to a beggar. Recently, multiple youtubers were caught having been paid by Russia to support Trump too and are currently investigated by your DOJ. And about the paranoia there's an interesting Peterson debate with Destiny where he supports conspiracy theories with 0 proof, which is.. unfortunate for a man of his level v=ycDUU1n2iEE

Any Employer that is overly focussed on some "accredited" diploma..... You do not want to work there if you have actual skills....

Is this full time?
@DeepThought8899Ай бұрын
It's completely up to you. I have taken 6 courses so far, I spent 1 week doing 3 of them, and I spent another week barely getting through 1 lol, so it's completely on your time.

Did you read 200 years together?

No, actually, I haven't gotten around to it, yet! I've read many of his other works, tho. Do you recommend it?

Other than a great production value, and wanting to see a specific individual for a lecture, Im not seeing it being worth the cost. In this day and age, everything is online. It makes most college courses at this point an unnecessary expense. That difference is, of course, that you end with a degree that is supposed to help you in the job market. Keywords being, 'supposed to' For that money, you could do a number of things, like investing it. But hey, spend your money how you please.

Yea I totally agree! I find alot of value in it but it definitely won't be for everyone. Thanks for commenting :)

Compared to "free", it is expensive. But you are investing in yourself. The payback period is the rest of your life. If it's useful, $500 is a bargain.
