I’m 23 and I love playing video games and going out. I’ve been a CCA for 2 weeks in a small town I had never been to. There is something about being away in a quiet small town walking the roads every day/getting loaned out to other small towns, that I just love. I figured out that I like being outside and getting better at it everyday. It’s something NOBODY knows ANYTHING about and it makes me a better person. I have a Bachelors and I felt like I settled for this but LOL I’ve been fucking loving taping my feet in the mornings. Cheers to the rest of you CCA’s! I’ll be out there tomorrow same as you.

@@augustiner8425 in 2002 we started out as PTF’s, as PTF’s the clock starts for retirement. Also medical, dental, uniform benefits begins. First sets of CCA’s had zero benefits, they were paid as temp workers, maybe it’s changed now as the post office couldn’t retain CCA’s. Delivering mail is not as easy as it looks. I do not work for the post office anymore, took an early retirement, and living it up in Southeast Asia. Sorry for rambling as I do not agree with USPS model and how management treat workers who actually handled/delivered the mail. Now I’ll try to answer your question. Someday you will make Regular, we all do. In 2002 I made regular in less than a year, then I got tired of driving 51 miles one way to work and put in a transfer and restarted as PTF again. This time it took a real long time to make regular, about 6 years. I didn’t care as PTF’s has a higher hourly rate and we were always maxing out at 56hrs a week. And I lived only 30 minutes away vice an hour or 2 away from the other post office. Each station is different, be patient and one day you will make regular. If you like your job, stick it out. When I was still there, I told every CCA that came into our shop to throw in the towel and find a different job.

Hang in there brother. Being a CCA is not easy. I have 17yrs in, the best advice I can give you is to ask questions. Every carrier has been in your situation so they know what it is like. If your not sure on something, odds are others had that exact same question earlier in their career. Once you are a regular at least you will have the option if you want to work OT. Being younger, you can retire in your early 50s if you are smart with your $$.

I always tell the new guys: follow the mail, just like you said. That and ... the streets and deliveries never change, meaning once you do a route or a set of hits a few times, now you know where and how the delivery goes. So, if you get assigned that section again, you won't be fumbling around looking for the delivery point. Edit: Laughed at your pivot story. Being the first CCA back is a death sentence for getting sent back out -- try to slow down a bit if you don't want the extra overtime. ;) The other major thing I don't see any people who make these kinds of videos discuss is the ability to transfer to ANY postal district/region once you make regular! We had a guy here in my station transfer from here in the North East to South Carolina to move in with his wife. Yes it kills your seniority, but what other job out there really lets you go across country like that with the same pay/benefits intact? Every city/town across the country has a Post Office, and while some may be harder to get into, if you're persistent you can get into whatever one you want eventually. Food for thought if you start in a shit-hole lol.

Get to know your fellow ccas and pick the most senior ones brains. Same with your union stewards. Management can definitely be a pain, especually once theyve set their sights on you. Best thing to do is just work hard and show commitment. Try to adapt to the unpredicatable schedule, it can be ruthless and probably the number 1 reason for the high turnover. DO NOT RUSH YOURSELF. That is the primary mistake all new ccas do, followed by panic. Try to opt and case asap when you feel youre ready. Opting usually gets you out of horrid amazon sunday. Pardon the wall of text.

Any CCA who thinks after a year that they earned a position into management to tell carriers with 20plus years of experience how to do the job is exactly why the post office is mismanaged. The postal service is full of supervisors who have carried mail for less then 3yrs and have used a injury as a excuse to get out of delivery.

I applied back in mid November but due to a glitch I never really applied. I applied again, correctly, and got an email the next day. I’m also a veteran. During orientation and training the instructors stated that you’ll work. Which is true but was kind of vague. Best way I can describe it is that you have to hustle. The trick is learning how to streamline everything. For example, dismounted delivery. Learning how to do your five safety steps in you LLV (curb the wheels, put in park, apply parking break, turning off engine and removing the key in addition to removing the seatbelt and opening the door) in an expedient manner is crucial. My very first day after 3 days of OJI they put me on a full on route. I didn’t have to case it but trying to figure out what to do was a challenge. Best advice I can give is to trust your DPS. That the presorted mail you get and it shows the whole route. What screwed me up was the park and loop. I thought it started from where I parked, went down 20 houses or so, crossed the street came back 20 houses to where my LLV was. Well, the PL was supposed to go past the LLV, cross again and deliver all the back to the LLV. So, basically, I skipped 1/3 of the park and loop and that made a mess of things. Then, there I was around 5:15 pm and the sun was going down and I couldn’t read the mail to finger it for the next house. Had to use street lamps, light from kitchen windows to see the mail. Had 3 people help me out and none of them blamed me and was encouraging after the fact. Had an issue the past Monday too. We were doing Amazon deliveries. Had 90 packages and the first 40 was businesses. Problem was it was raining hard and my scanner got wet. Didn’t ruin it but it glitched it out. I’d press one button and it acted like I hit multiple buttons. Delivering the 9th package the GPS part of the scanner stopped. Supervisor told me to forget the first 39 and just do residential. Problem was I had 90 stops but had about 110 packages and most of them were in first part of the route. Meaning I would have to unload half of the fully loaded LLV to get to the residential packages. Got help from two people. The guy was grumpy AF. Told him I was new and he didn’t want to hear it. The girl, Monica, helped like the champ she is. Grumpy dude did give some tips when I made it back to the office. Anyway, a CCA needs to 1) hustle and 2) streamline that hustle. Work smarter and not necessarily harder.

Random comments: Maybe terminology is different in different regions of the country, but in San Diego a pivot on another assignment is done within 8 hours. Anything over 8 hours is called overtime. If you are waiting to be hired, keep this in mind: One of the most important aspects of doing this job is being organized. I can’t stress that enough. If you become a CCA, don’t ever hesitate to ask a question about anything. Ask a carrier or a manager. If anyone tells you your best isn’t good enough, that’s wrong. There are no standards on the street, and in the office they need to count the mail as you case it to really know if you’re not making standards. But as a new employee, you shouldn’t be expected to make casing standards right away. I have major respect for CCAs in a big city where the pressure is high. Thank you for sticking with it. Signed, a retired city carrier.

So my advice for walking is you need to build up tough feet. If you have open blisters and this is gonna sound savage. But if you take spray deodorant and just do a quick spray on the open blister. That sucker will seal up and toughn up in 3 days. This is an old boot camp tactic that helps with boot blisters.

@@armygunz937 get ready to work long hours. the best days to work are rainy days, dogs don't like to go out in the rain. you'll get pepper spray, use it for everything even spiders in the mailbox. Just don't pepper spray dogs on the other side of the fence. Also don't be down wind if you have to use pepper spray. I had no time but react when a rottweiler rushed me, started spraying it and got some on me. And oh don't wait to spray a dog charging you, just start spraying and spraying and get that blanket of fog around in front of you. Some dogs are not affected, like pit bulls. Had one take a chunk off my knee. I have a new and improved prosthetic knee cap. I requested a titanium one but it would have cost a fortune. Good luck to you out there. Take more than one can of pepper spray, I usually have 3 with me all the time. 2 on my hip and one in the vehicle.

ChimpoTalks Gaming Might be the dumbest job I’ve ever had. And mind you, I’ve been a dish washer in a Chinese food restaurant The job has zero character and is unrealistic in its expectations for people to be jerked around. Almost 6 months and I’ve worked every single Sunday! None said anything about working Sundays. Oh sure...the “occasional” Sunday. Maybe one out of four. Worked EVERY holiday. Oh, and it’s Tuesday right now and 4 of July is Sat? Am I working? Who the hell knows. THEY don’t know. Must wait until Friday for them to be able to make a schedule. You’re off tomorrow. Nope, you’re working. You’re working tomorrow, nope, you’re off. Come in at 7am on yet another Sunday and find out that two people called out sick and so, YOU have to pick up the slack. But, why is it taking you so long? So “thank you” for working on Father’s Day, no “we really appreciate you’re hard work”.....nothing. They’re like Jehovah witnesses; they don’t acknowledge ANY holiday. Oh, and if you work a holiday, sure, you get paid for the hours you work but, what about getting paid for the holiday? Yea, you get paid SIX hours for that! Huh? Constantly thrown to a new route where you don’t know anything, especially on a Monday (where there’s DOUBLE the work, and same pay) or a Tuesday where there are these bullshit advise that no one wants. And getting back to Sunday, why are we not paid 1.5 for that? Ludicrous! They can’t schedule the, selves out of a paper bag and, if there’s one Hong I can’t be a part of is inefficiency and an overall sense of bitchyness. Everyone’s bitchy. No matter what you do, it just isn’t good enough. And the fact is, it IS good enough. Putting 10% off coupon into people’s mail boxes and being ground into the ground on 100 degree days in trucks with no AC for $17 an hour.....just isn’t worth it. For me. Oh, and all that, and they don’t provide health insurance!. Please, they SHOULD run out of money. They’re doing everything in their power to drive the business OUT of business. I can’t wait to see it happen. These people will go out in the REAL world where they’re forced to actually communicate with people and, Darwin will take over.

Now I know why people quit one is because of the weather and its too hot or cold. Yeah unfortunately it’s not like that for every post office but sometimes it’s not the job it’s the management. Most supervisors were once CCAs so they know what you’re going through yet act brand new when they get into management. The good thing is once you’re in you’re in try a window clerk position or mail handler. You don’t have to stay in that position.

As a soon to be former City Carrier, the job wouldn't be so hard if it was five days a week, and they didn't hand you off another route right when you get back from a long day of delivering mail. I picked the job because I figured it be easier than the pest control job I did a few years ago. BOY WAS I WRONG. I'm gonna be in that percentile of carriers that quit within their first month. I can make just as much money working way less hard in an office job. That's another thing, I was told to not talk about your long term plans in the post office. In other words, don't talk about how you would like to work at a desk, management may not like that.

I have a relative who recently began working with the USPS in Pennsylvania. I was dumbfounded by listening to her describe how much work is involved. It is common to walk 16 miles per day as you mentioned, even in a quieter small town! One has to remember that is while inconveniently carrying an armload of mail, shoulder bag, and walking on uneven ground, while being lucky to have a couple brief breaks, and maybe a snack. It sounds quite demanding. The decent wage is earned unquestionably. She has been very stressed at times. I think it is beneficial to hear what other jobs involve.

The seniority system is also busted, thats why lazy asses or people that kiss ass get away with it. Majority of those who do that lack the proper skills to be in management yet here we are.

CCA for 1.5 years here and a regular for nearly 6 now ... and yeah I don't think the current generation wants to do hard (often physically) demanding work. It's like they feel it's beneath them or something. It's not for everyone (I don't see how someone who wants a real family life and who doesn't have 20+ years in already could work the job to be honest)... but you'll be hard pressed to earn the same amount (factoring in benefits) without being in the right field with the right degree. One of the good things about the USPS is they generally have to follow all the labor laws. Even if at times they may try to cut corners you are working for the govt. so if you push it they will pay you what you are owed. That means 1.5 x after 40 hours and sometimes even 2x in certain situations. Last year took a month vacation even though they didn't like it . But they had to OK it because I was maxed out with over 700 hours of annual leave and you can only carry over 520 so it had to be used up. If you help out management a good manger will have your back but not all are any good and some are borderline evil. That's where a transfer come in, lol .

I actually made more money as a cca, because of all the ot i pretty much had to do, but im thankful i got converted when i did. keep thinking about the money, it helps

+John Galt The benefits are also considerably better as a reg. I had some medical issues last year and I paid a total of about $200 for $4000 worth of medical care. That includes the multiple $20 co-pays. We also get TEN paid holidays during the year. Now the CCAs get six paid holidays! When I was a CCA we got no paid holidays.

The USPS treats its employees like dirt. The routes are too long for the expected times. It is absurd. Some routes deliver to like half of the houses within a town. Yet, you'll have supervisors tell you, "that's a four hour route". Nonsense. That route is a six or seven hour route. The supervisors for some reason act like they don't understand that mail volume greatly affects your time on the road. They don't seem to understand that if you're given seven certified letters and receive twenty letters that require a signature, that it is going to take extra time. They don't seem to understand the number of times you have to dismount to deliver packages that can't fit in the mailbox. They don't understand having to dismount every time for the loads of people who park on the road and block access to the mailbox. Yet, they still expect you to turn those wheels, put that emergency break on, and remove the key on each dismount. You can bust your rear end, only to get back to the office and get verbally abused. Why? You took too long. I doubt that these supervisors could finish the routes in the times they expect their mail carriers to finish them in. When it gets down to it, it's all about money. The USPS doesn't want to pay its employees overtime. They also want to get the mail back for the truck. (understandable) However, given that the routes are too long, don't blame the carriers for the post office's failure to divide the routes evenly. They aren't equal. Some routes are much easier than others, yet they are treated as though they are equal.

This is one of the most accurate things I've ever read. The one thing I don't like about this job is management and their incompetence. I have my own route now, but when I was a CCA there were routes I could get done in an hour and a half early and there were some I couldn't get done within even 9 hours.....why so much inconsistency. It's so ridiculous.

All these CCA videos talk about it being so hard. Please tell me what is so hard about it? I've done roofing, carpentry, logging and all kinds of physically demanding jobs. What makes this so hard? Is it the hours or what?

Most people don't know what hard work is. When I started at the PO , in maintenance, one of my coworkers got leukemia. There were only three of us who could fix and do the daily routes on the machine and the other guy didn't do OT. So I worked seven days a week for about a year until my coworker got out of chemo treatment. I tell this to some of the newly hired crybabies and they can't fathom it. Seventh day was double time so I recharged the bank account. No regrets. People in many poor countries work every day but the entitled over here wonder why they can't get ahead.

Richard Richardson sweet ! Quick questions, I just recently got a job offer sent to me through email. Within you 90probation is there absolutely no way of calling out sick even if you have a really terrible fever ? Also , how many days/hours have you worked so far ? I hear ppl say they work a lot but what is the realism of this based on YOUR experience. Also idk if you can make a vid about any tips you would do differently to prepare ?:) I’m excited and just waiting for a start date !

RCA here. I dont envy the city carriers much. Your poor knees, ankles, soles and hips. And all of the sun on your skin. All of that walking every damn day. I know your body adjusts to it but screw that. Except maybe when it rains a lot and the rural roads turn into sludge or into a river or lake. Being in a nice POV, with AC, heater, radio going, seated, using a reacher/grabber. It's... pretty easy. Only downside is you could very well wait a decade or more for a regular position. I will have worked 3 years and I will be regular. 3 retirements in a small town office with three old guys all retiring same time. Then the other issue is getting new RCAs who would even bother subbing for a slew of new/younger regulars with their own regular option being locked away for 20 something years. There needs to be some changes to rural side for sure. It's neglected by the USPS.

It’s tough because you start is a CCA with no benefits no PTO no sick time no vacation because you’re like a contract so pretty much you don’t get another good benefits or any benefits into your full time which they can take a year or two years maybe four years so it is a tough job and most people need really good medical insurance

I am new. I have a couple questions. 1. If they schedule me at 8 a.m ..and i show up at 7:30 a.m... can i clock in at 7:30 a.m or i have to wait until 8 a.m to clock in ?? 2. I interviewed at 2 places for CCA position. One place said that i don't need to do the casing and another place says i have to do the casing. Is it easy to learn casing?? why CCA needs to do casing? 3. Some people did not make it before 90 days probation. Why? Do you see people did not make it before 90 days probation?? 4. If you delivery mail to a store and that store is closed on that day. What do you do ? bring it back to USPS? or you keep it in the car and delivery the next day ? 5. What do you do if it's raining? do you still deliver mail or wait for the rain to stop ?
