This episode outlines the different pathways for becoming a psychologist in Australia and gives you a better sense of what the interviews are like. I take you on personal journey and most of the footage shows my genuine reactions and perception in the hopes that this will help if you're considering becoming a psychologist.

Hi Kathleen, firstly - really appreciate you post this video and it is really helpful! I am from Hong Kong and thinking of pursing psychology and becoming a clinical or counseling psychologist one day. Since it is a huge investment for me(requiring me to study a bachelor in AUS first), is that difficult to get into a master of psychology in AUS from your experience?

Thanks for reaching out and glad to hear this was helpful :) Masters programs for psychology are competitive and can be difficult to get into. They will assess your research skills (clinical masters), work experience (this might not be weighted as heavily) and personality traits. They'll also assess you on your English speaking skills (although I'm not 100% sure how this works). In sum, I would say it is difficult but definitely possible. It requires a lot of hard work during your undergrad and honours, however the work can be very rewarding. Psychology is also a growth based industry in Australia. Hope this helps!

Hi Kathleen, I absolutely appreciate you posting this video and it is really helpful! I would really like to clear some of my doubts in person. Is there any chat bot you run to offer such services? That would really be great.

Hi Kathleen, your videos are awesome and it was very informative. I'm Visa from India , currently living in Melbourne... did my bachelor's in psychology (3yrs) and masters in Counselling psychology (2yrs) in India. So as a overseas applicant which is the best way to pursue as a psychologist in Australia. I don't know how to get internships or volunteer opportunities. Can you guide me to get good job ? Thank you

Hey Visa, Thanks for reaching out! A good place to start would be giving the APS or APHRA a call to find out if your qualifications are recognised in Aus. From there you might need to do a bit of further study - if you're wanting to work as a registered or endorsed psychologist, it's likely that you would need to do a masters. The ANU and the University of Melbourne both have professional masters degrees that you can apply for with just an undergrad in psych (however they're very competitive). Alternatively you could look at doing an honours year, then a masters or a psychology diploma - these pathways would also help you gain registration. Definitely worth doing your own research, but the APS or APHRA would be a great starting point. Hope this helps and wishing you all the best :)
