game like Destiny and CoD use Kernel access anti-cheat program, which forcfully access the entire memory from your device, allow them to take full control of everything you have in your device. think of it like how the police getting into your house and look around for drug without a proper warrant. Window OS is cool with that, but not Linux, Linux is hard on user privacy, so they dont play well with those anti cheat system. so this is not a Steam issue as much as this is a Linux issue. and Steam simply perfer Linux for their Steam Deck OS, so that is that

@@LostWallet linux is perfectly "cool" with software running at a kernel level. Anti-cheat developers do not want to support it because it is seen as easier to bypass, or they just don't see the potential customer base as worth it.

@ that just make those developers seem even more shady. that means there are anti cheat that are compatible with Linux that they refuse to use simply because they dont want the people who use Linux to be able to play their games. I dont see how these companies helping Windows OS holding the monopoly market would be any good for the industry.

@@LostWallet Linux is not privacy-focused. The difference is that Windows has specific kernel APIs that can be used to inspect the running state of e.g. any process, by design. It allows anti-cheat to exist that can see what’s running, what’s altering memory in other process, other stuff. Linux can do all this, but the problem is that the kernel is open source. This means that cheaters can easily patch the kernel to LIE to the anti-cheat software about what’s happening, and then… just continue to cheat.

Ask game dev to enable anti cheat for linux. Valve already did its part. Game dev only has to check one box, which allows you to play games with anti cheat.

The only reason that makes me want to dual boot windows on the SD is gamepass, because other than that, there's translation layers that work pretty great on SteamOs, I have epic and Ea play installed on mine and it's honestly shocking how good they work.

There are ways to stream Gamepass games to your Steam Deck without Windows. Personally I use GeForce Now which has a good portion of Gamepass games and XBPlay which will even let you remote stream your Xbox, although they both cost money. There is a free way to do it with Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft even has a guide if you look it up.

Just like the smartphone phenomenon, Microsoft (that almost feels like a slur) is letting the handheld PC market pass them by. They may still make a handheld, but I doubt it will be a windows handheld. It will either be Cloud only or XBOX only. Come on Microsoft, you can still pull off a comeback!

I can't remember where they were but i changed some settings in Windows and the standby battery life improved DRAMATICALLY.

I was thinking to use steam deck to make two partitions and install windows on the second since valve releases the drivers for steam deck for windows. On windows I’d like to download and play some games from GAME PASS but it seems that I’m the only one guy of the world having that idea since no one on the whole internet shared a single video on this whole process and how he was able to decently play a game from game pass There’s no support about this from valve or from the community and now I’m thinking that my steam deck is broken since from day one I wasn’t able to decently play a single game downloaded from game pass: someone continuously crashes during the tutorial, others have not support for the controller, other are so laggy to became unplayable I don’t want to buy the games again on steam since I’ve bought them for PlayStation and I’ve game pass for the Xbox

I did this and quickly learned the hardware is not powerful enough and ended up going out and buying a ROG Ally and gave my steam deck away for free to one of my friends. Now I only game on the ROG ALLY it plays all of my games.

Personally after a few h of tweaking I got it to run well off my SD card. Virtual Memory Paging gave me the biggest boost in performance. I only use windows for games that cannot run on steamos (fuck you EA)

I found Windows on a handheld console so crap, due to having to run multiple applications just to half arsedly replicate what SteamOS has integrated into it. I also can't stand W11. W7 and W10 were ok. But it is just so annoying when you want to pick up and play. Hibernate is NOT suspend and resume. My Ally got less use compared to my Deck purely due to the OS on it. Until I wiped Windows off it. That said I play single player games so ditching Windows was a positive for me because I didn't lose any games.

Hello I have a few questions to see if these are able to be resolved. We've installed windows on a SD card, and set it up with no problem, it works fine but there is a few issues. The wifi adapters do not work for some reason, we have installed all the drivers from Steams Windows page, it connects via LAN fine but wifi is preferably. The rockstar games launcher won't sign in properly when launching GTAV through steam, we sign in, then it just closes and then never boots GTAV, another attempt will prompt sign in again and the circle continues.

I'd suggest Duelbooting to play specific games like that. It is not worth loosing the great SteamOS side just to play 1 or 2 games that require windows.

You have to understand windows to unlock the power of windows & then you won’t go back b/c windows is capable of so much more but at the cost of a learning curve like playing a souls like game & dying 100 times. There is no point really to installing windows if you don’t run lossless scaling. Resident Evil 4 remake runs at 35 fps-ish on medium w/ a steam deck. By running lossless scaling you will exceed 120 fps. b/c its downloading the frames, like it’s almost streaming them, ad if are they cloud based, you can gain more frames then your refresh rate.

Honestly, in my opinion, the Steam deck is incredible just with Steam Os and the Linux system, I would never dual boot Windows, I don't see the need. And even if you want to install these games that are not compatible (Call of Duty and others), there are other ways to make them run very well without Windows. But, that's my opinion
