I was at KFC and a ball of chewed chicken was stuck and whenever i would swallow i felt is having trouble to go down. The next day i tried eating a piece of bread and i swallowed it and started panicing because i felt it in my throat. I lost weight quickly but watched and thought about how normal i used to eat. I was supposed to go to a therapist but slowly cured myself. I calmed down, breathed and smiled and slowly took small bites of food and swallowed. Dont rush yourself just do it calmly and trust me things get better💗💗

Guys just take deep breaths, try to calm your muscles and don’t get nervous while thinking of it. Just try to act like it’s not there and eventually you will forget about it and it will stop. Also for me drinking water or eating food makes me feel better so you can try it. I had this one month ago but now it starting to go away because I don’t think about it. Good luck and just so you know you’re not alone❤️

I have been experiencing this for over a month and I just searched it and found out about associated choking anxiety I have trouble eating anything from lettuce or other leafy greens or sprouts that may have a “stringy” texture to it, to even fish, meat burger ( the patty), spaghetti or noodles etc Basically it’s more easy for me to eat apples, avocados, bananas, watermelon and some bread, soft cookies and pizza ALWAYS with a glass of water on the side because I feel it’s “safe” I had a plain cheese pizza (margarita) last night and it was okay No problem what so ever I guess I have to work on it to make progress because I can’t keep on living by only eating these foods Thank you for the video! Very helpful and educational!!!

Hi Clare, I hope you are well. Not sure if you've managed to get in touch with the right people since posting but if you haven't try asking to see either a dietician that also specialises in disordered eating. (Not just anorexia/bulimia and subtypes) other wise a speech pathologist as they can help retrain the muscle function when eating. good luck

I've delt with stress...anxiety attacks and a hypochondriac my whole life... And this is happening to right now during COVID-19... I want to eat but once I put the food in my mouth I don't want to swallow...because of choking... I've been choking on tiny pieces of food...so I've been trying to chew my food better...still not helping I freak out so bad...like I'm going to die...so I hurry up and get a drink, which helps put relief into my mind...and after awhile...it even happens out of nowhere when I'm not even eating... This had been happening for about a week...
@yoimnikol33324 жыл бұрын
Arianna Hattis you should try massaging your neck! Just place your thumbs on the ending of your jawline (where your ears are) and put pressure and then slide them down. It really helped me

If this becomes a long term reoccurring problem i would encourage you to seek medical advice if possible because it really could be a number of things going on. Remember both my own experience and comments and others should be taken with a grain of salt we are not medical professionals. I under stand everyones anxiety is peeking at the moment but if its occurring during non meal times as well i would be asking a gp their opinion. on top of anxiety i also have fibromyalgia which causes the muscles in my jaw/neck/throat to go into spasm at will its normally very painful but can inhibit my ability to swallow. so like i said anxiety is absolutely a legit reason for it to be happening but if it continues worth getting looked at further.

Omg I am so glad I found this video. I have no problem swallowing food but when it's time to swallow a medicine pill whole I have every single time huge anxiety. It turns into me staying with the pill in my mouth for 20 min no problem, feeling on the verge of panick, sweating because of the later and almost crying. It's quite awful and I have had that for over 10 years not knowing it was a condition. For me it all started when I choked on a cherry pit and then it was over. Thanks for sharing your experience because without it I would have kept feeling like a lonely bum.
@IAmYou_N5 жыл бұрын
I'm so thankful for your comment! This is exactly why i choose to share this stuff, i know i hate feeling like i'm struggling alone and i never want anyone else to feel like that if i can help it. I completely understand you re the sweating!! Pills is a big on for me ... which sort of sucks because i need to take daily medication. After i had my last surgery i specifically requested childrens medication in liquid form... which has its downsides because you can imagine just how much you have to consume to get an adult dose ... i also am a habitual medication cracker and will mix it with jam. I think somethings become habits and we form neural pathways that basically let panic win. I know for me working with a dietician re the food situation helped immensley! and that took about 20-30 weeks of solid work, so i feel like the same thing could potentially assist with medications as well it might just take longer. My biggest piece of advice tho is just to learn to be uncomfortable. once i hit peak discomfort and actually had to deal with it (with anxiety in toe) after a while i realised whats the worse that could happen... if the worst happens can it be fixed... if the answer is yes .. i'd have to at least try . obviously its still a work in progress and some days are better then others but its worth trying. I hope you get something from this.

That initial experience sounds absolutely terrifying, which probably fed on itself to make it even worse. :( Dealing with phobias can be rough... you know logically that there should be nothing to fear, but when it hits you, logic goes out the window. I have to deal with acrophobia (fear of heights), and sometimes have trouble going up stairs where there's an opening between the steps and you can see down through them. Once, on a trip with my brother, he was skiing, while I puttered around the lowlands taking pictures of the scenery... I was meeting him for lunch one day at the "halfway lodge" on the mountain. That meant I needed to ride the gondola up to the lodge (no way could I do a ski lift... that would send me over the edge!). It was an enclosed spherical gondola, and even so I had a bit of apprehension, but it didn't feel all that strong. As it proceeded up the mountain, I could see the beautiful snow-capped mountain range on the horizon. I thought "I really need to get a picture of this!", as my camera was hanging around my neck. Despite consciously wanting to get the picture, I could not raise my hands from where they were laying flat on the seat at my sides! I wanted to, but absolutely could not get them to lift. Anyone who's never experienced a phobia probably can't understand how that feels.

I am dealing with this so bad right now, its so hard to deal with. I am constantly breathing thru my nose to make sure I am not choking (had 2 choking incidents in the past year) and then during or after I get a wave of adrenaline and anxiety over my body, that I have no idea how to control, even tho the meal is over and its done with. Sometimes its so bad that Ill have multiple panic attacks during eating which results in me not finishing the food. I was just in the hospital for this the other day bc I had to leave work early bc of the panic attacks from my lunch, and on my way home it got so bad that I hyper ventilated and my arms went numb. I went to hospital via ambulance and they said I was all good, and gave me some 0.25mg anxiety meds. I also had an ENT check my air way with a camera and I am clear with no issues, but the anxiety exists. I have no idea how to get over this. It is seriously the worst feeling. When I am done eating, its almost like shortness of breathe which induces the panic attack or Adrenaline rush. God it sucks :(

This video describes exactly how I feel. Mine is different though that when I’m at home, I’m usually fine. I eat pretty normal in my house and around my family and boyfriend. But when I’m in public or at someone else’s house and around other people I’m not completely comfortable with, I truly cannot swallow without struggling for a minute. I have to swallow my food with a sip of water. I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety in the past but now I think it’s getting worse and it’s caused this, but I don’t know. I’m currently looking for a therapist but there’s none really where I live and I feel so alone and hopeless.

I choked 3 times since this Easter. First time food accidentally slid down my throat (slippery filled pasta). My husband did the Heimlich maneuver. Next day took my pills & swig of water & totally choked again with no air. Did the Heimlich maneuver on myself using back of wooden chair (husband was gone) to start breathing again. Things were normal until April 29th (our 25th wedding anniversary) late at night when I took one of my calcium pills...totally choked again. Husband gave me Heimlich maneuver. Apparently my throat had never completely healed from first choking incident. Now my brain is telling my throat...no more liquids! Can only drink water one sip at a time in fear of choking. Hope to see occupational therapist soon & get back to drinking like a normal person again. Have lost 15 pounds since Easter as a result of all the choking trauma.

The morning seems to be better to be swallowing, the afternoons are painful!! I know it’s due to anxiety but I can’t control it. Any tips on how to overcome this

The biggest thing for me was to sit with the discomfort, to force myself to realise that even though its unpleasant nothing bad happened, so for this reason i do not drink when i am eating. which was something suggested to me by my therapist and it does help take the edge off once you get used to it, or it did for me anyway. otherwise if im having s really horrible episode of anxiety i try do a sense count, i.e. 5 things i can see, hear, touch, smell to distract myself and if all else fails i set a 30 minute timer to prove to myself nothing will happen from the time i start feeling like i cant breathe. its all about training yourself to understand that you can be uncomfortable and still be ok. hope. some of that is helpful to you

Hi Emily, I'm really sorry to hear that. While I am by no means a Dr and everything I say or have experienced should be taken with a grain of salt if this is something that has begun negatively impacting your life, day t day or health i would consider asking your dr for a referral to a dietician and maybe even a psychologist if you feel comfortable. For me personally these 2 professionals have been very helpful in changing the behaviour and lessening the associated anxiety. But as with all medical issue if you do not feel right about something in YOUR own body fight for what you want and don't take advice lying down, even if that means more then one Drs opinion. I think I developed a phobia of choking years ago somehow. It comes and goes, I also have pnd which drips and causes me to cough a lot from my deviated septum. I think I choked or had a laryngeal spasm before a few times. One time my throat closed up after feeling a prickling sensation from some oats I was eating and I was gasping for air then stopped after a few seconds. The past year hasn't been too bad for me up until December my problems started coming back. Swallowing has to be well timed for me and chewing a lot, I usually like softer foods now like eggs. Tonight I had some food with rice and it feels like it got stuck near my airway so I was in a panic state for an hour pacing and taking sips of carbonated water and trying to talk myself to calm down. I really think I need some serious help dealing with this for years on and off and coming to no real solution.

Hey Jordanne, I understand that this can be pretty stressful, my advice (note i am not a medical professional) would be not to push him or force him because that will probably just backfire and increase his anxiety. If it becomes bad (for example i got to the point where i wouldn't even drink anything) i would highly recommend seeking out a dietician who specialises in a condition called ARFID and or a speech pathologist to get him re acclimated with the sensation of different foods without focusing on the muscle movement when they are in his mouth. In the meantime however if he is still willing and able to eat softer textured foods that make him feel more in control of the situation i.e. mash potato, protein drinks etc. at least he will be getting some nutrients until it can be sorted. I wish you the best of luck with this, it sucks but you CAN fix it. regards

I literally CANNOT wear a mask that touches my face or I start to panic and become unable to breathe. (This also happens if I wake up with blankets or sheets over my face.) I use a hat with a face shield. Because of this, I will not be going on an airplane, going to the movies, or going to certain stores where you are required to wear a mask that covers your face securely and tightly. For me, it's just like being smothered. I have a psychiatrist (bipolar and other things), so I'm receiving help, but it's difficult, especially since I have had full blown panic attacks twice in stores (different stores). After the last one, the masks went out the window for me. Nuh-uh. Not gonna traumatize myself because everyone else is panicking. I'll just stay home, thank you very much.

Since I got anxiety at 17 I began choking on food, at 18 I had soup dish for a year, I began to practice swallowing soft solid foods & felt it stuck but soon since end of last year to February this year I was eating solid foods like burgees pasta tacos but never was able finish whole thing as I started feeling anxiety & it felt like i had take deep breathe before and during and after each swallow. I choked on burger end of February with red tomatoe face and since then went to 80 lbs kept choking red purple suffocating face & have therapist appointment wensday. I heard fear of choking classes help and I’m taking natural anxiety medicine but not working to eat I almost died last night choked badly and scared to eat: I miss eating solid food anyone can u help me? Hi Mariela i'm so sorry you've been through all that ! Have you considered seeing an ENT or gastroenterologist to make sure there isn't a physical problem with your oesophagus? i feel if your choking to that extreme of an extent perhaps your DR should be more proactive in helping you. I hope therapy is giving you some relief for the time being and i'd love to get an update on how you are if you do end up going to those classes. Thanks again for reaching out. x

@@IAmYou_N I've been having thethe same problem except I haven't been choking but I'm definitely really scared to eat for the fear of choking so that leads me to not really eat or drink anything I've been waking up in the morning feeling so full and I haven't even eaten anything or sometimes I'll eat two bites of food and feel like I'm going to explode this is very stressful I don't know if this is a general problem with my esophagus or anxiety it could be both though in my case

First and foremost if this in impacting your health you need to either talk to an adult about it or get them to get you a doctors appointment to have it addressed. i will be filming another video tomorrow going through how i personally dealt with my issue but i urge you to seek proper medical advice if your health is deteriorating as aresult.

Hi, I've been experiencing anxiety from December 22 to January 2 I went to the hospital on the December 22nd for throat discomfort it felt like a lump was on the left side of my throat the doctors checked my throat they said nothing was wrong I went home feeling very relieved after, though my throat wasn't really getting any better and I still felt that lump I really don't know if I am really anxious or if this is a real health condition. Ever since that day my symptoms of anxiety have been getting worse but my biggest symptom has to be my throat sometimes I was scared to eat because because I thought that foods or drinks was going to get in my in my windpipe and and get into my lungs and I was going to die from pneumonia but I did my research and technically that's impossible because of the epiglottis covering your windpipe which prevents food from going down but this can also malfunction and stop working so this also scares me. When I eat food it feels like it's taking a very long time to go down my throat almost as if it's going to get stuck this scares me a lot so now most of the time I skip meals and I barely eat or drink anything during the day this has stopped me from urinating and using the bathroom regularly which can lead to real health problems but, I've been learning how to take it slow and eat bits of food even though that's still uncomfortable too but I know that I'm going to get through it. It's nice to know that someone else has been going through this I've been feeling very alone because my family doesn't want to help me especially because of my other symptoms of my anxiety that I think causes gas issues which makes them not really want to be around me I've also been coughing a lot so that gets pretty annoying for them I'm happy that I've been able to find other people on the internet that if that's experiencing the same things as me because now I don't feel so alone. I've been looking all over KZbin to find someone who has been experiencing the same problems with their throat like I do and I found you and all the people in this comment section. I'm glad you've learned how to cope with your throat hopefully I can do the same. I'm trying to get through this by watching multiple KZbin videos to help with my anxiety and my throat discomfort but I really just want to go to the hospital again and get it checked out but I'm only 16 and I can't really do that right now especially because of covid and me having no money lol I want to also change my diet because some foods are just really hard for me to swallow but I also have no control over that since again I'm only 16 but hopefully this will all get better soon thank you for making this KZbin video this comforted me a lot.

Im really sorry your going through this with little to no support. I think what your doing slowly introducing small amounts of food is a step in the right direction and something you should continue to do. I will also let you in on a tip, try really really hard not to cough because when you cough you band your vocal chords together and if your coughing because of the sensation of choking and you are not actually choking and doing this regularly you can damage and or scar your vocal chords as well as end up with a chronic cough. I know thats easier said then done thanks to the anxiety of it all. I will also recommend not playing into the hands of anxiety, if possible do not google possible outcomes, i.e pneumonia and other issues because this will only highten your what if mentality and will likely make your anxiety worse. I think once you have some measures in place to control the anxiety it should help your other symptoms but please no matter how difficult try get some food and water into your body daily persistence is key,. Best of luck X

@@IAmYou_N Thankyou I 've been letting my throat get worse by coughing a lot and spitting up mucus which is probably tiring to my throat muscles. I haven't been eating anything like literally nothing but I've been drinking tea sadly tho that's not helping at all but, today I will change that no matter how scared I am which is very scared I realize the only way to get through this is no matter what I have to swallow and take it step by step which is extremely hard because no one wants to die by choking but I will take your advice that you. Thankyou for replying back to my comment with your advice I really appreciate that God bless you ❤️

Heya If you google ARFID you might be able to read up a little better. basically its an anxiety towards food that is born out of a negative experience. your body has a panic attack and it basically teaches your brain that swallowing is bad... which will begin to form a neural-pathway sort of like how you can train yourself to have bad habits except this happens subconsciously. so for me everytime i had to chew and swallow food my brain went into panic mode and convinced me i was going to choke before i had even tried to swallow. I went to a dieticians and also had a speech pathologist assigned to me in hospital who basically taught me to eat again. first with puree, then minced moist all the way back up to solids. it took a LONG time but it was so worth it.

Over the last several years, I have struggled with the obsession of breathing, the obsession of not being able to sleep, and a short stint obsession of blinking. I had to go to therapy especially because it was rooted in my general anxiety. For the breathing obsession, it led to panic attacks (which makes sense) and also obsessing about panic attacks resulted. I was actually diagnosed with OCD in the past amidst all this when I first seeked treatment. I was on an anti-depressant for stints and a good duration over that last 3-4 years which helped me with the issues I just listed. HOWEVER, I stopped taking the medication about 2 months ago because I wanted to seek alternatives to see if one day in the future I would not need the anti-depressant (Im on mood probiotics because of recent intriguing research and testimonies). However less than a week ago I developed this hyper conscience thing with eating/swallowing food and having fear that I'll choke. Its ultimately a choking fear. It sucks so much...and my history of how my mind becomes controlled by irrational fears and obsessions is really reflecting with this new fear of choking focus I have. Any insight? Or help
@IAmYou_N4 жыл бұрын
Heya, firstly i'm sorry you've had to deal with all that. I just want to make it exponentially clear i am not a professional and i also do not suffer from OCD so i cannot share in that experience of life with you. HOWEVER as a chronic anxiety sufferer since the age of 3 and additionally someone who battles other mental illnesses drug free i can tell you what has or hasnt worked for me and you can come to your own conclusions. I am NOT medicated this was a choice i made after many years of having adverse side effects from antipsychotics to antidepressants and just about every anxiety drug inbetween. That being said it is a harder road (for me) because it means i need to pay very close attention to behaviours and situations that form those behaviours in order to know how to tackle any given situation. My anxiety and i over the years have learned to work together is many cases so when i had this issue i was taken aback because suddenly i had NO CONTROL! for me talk therapy (something i have been doing for the better part of ten years) in order to rationalise a situation is helpful, this however depends on your own experience of how your mind works. every time i could feel the anxiety around food arising i would implement my own mantra if you will. I knew exactly what was happening i knew the physiological process of eating and swallowing and i knew i was in no danger ... we all know anxiety is irrational. So i had to push myself at first it began with swallowing soft foods and after every bite i would speak because if i was speaking i wasnt choking, then it became reassuring myself that when a choking incident occurs a person will generally involuntarily cough so every time i swallowed and didnt cough that was a step forward. I also implemented stricter techniques taught to me by a dietician who had a background in anxiety driven disordered eating, on his advice i would not drink at all while i was eating... this was HARD at first but i had to sit with the discomfort in order to understand it could not hurt me. so for me endurance and pushing through it with knowledge was ultimately what untrained the behaviour. If you feel you work in a similar way and have the means too i strongly recommend a dietician with a psychology background mine was so invaluable in this experience because not only did he understand the problem from both sides but the advice and techniques were helpful if you implement them to the full extent. I really hope you can find your way through this because i know how horrible it is and how badly it can affect your body. Good luck X

Just recently I watched a funny video I tried my mouth. I was being really dumb so I swallowed the food halfway and the bread was sitting and the back of my throat. I took a moment to laugh out loud. the food sitting at the back of my throat then it slowly slid down my throat. I tried to swallow but it wouldn't work. I was all the way upstairs with the door closed and my parents were downstairs. Now I can't swallow food because, I think about choking and funny things exactly when I'm about to swallow, my own Sometimes I get so nervous that when I swallow the first time it doesn't go all the way down and I can't get it down. I'm literally starving to death TvT
