NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for mental health advice and seek professional help if you are struggling. This talk only represents the speaker's personal experiences with and understanding of BPD and associated treatments, which remain an ongoing field of study. Some viewers may find elements of this talk alienating. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
While conversations about mental health have increased in recent years, there is much about the process of treatment and diagnosis that is challenging for an individual struggling to get help. In this talk, Varun shares his experience with mental health recovery utilizing dialectical behavior therapy techniques as well as reframing of his perspective on mental health and redefining his understanding of what a successful mental health recovery looks like. Varun Joshi is a data science student at Georgia State University who is passionate about mental health, research, and programming. He aims to bring his passions together by developing an app to help those suffering from bipolar disorder by drawing on both clinical research as well as his own lived experience with bipolar II. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you so much Varun! You're words aren't just useful for BPD, but for all of us who deal with mental health challenges. You also helped me get better insight to a friend of mine who does deal with BPD, and a little more compassion!

I feel heard. Thank you so much for this. I’m a nurse and it’s been so hard keeping it concealed at times when I’m having a downward spiral.

Good talk. Thank you. My mom has BPD and we do not know how to get her to therapy. She needs to move forward rather than be stuck in victim and blame. Not be perfect, just accountable.

I very much appreciate the ideas and feelings you shared but one thing made me feel hugely disappointed and pulled me back from sharing this video with my family and friends. That is the fact that ever since BPD became evident in me, my life has only gone downhill and worse. There is no long term progress, my BPD is not quiet. In fact the beacon of hope I was has now started to dim significantly. After 30,i am nothing and nowhere near what my ambitious childhood self imagined. When you started to talk about how to overcome the setbacks and recover hope, I was listening eagerly. But what I received was a validation to my defeatist thoughts.😢
