My faith died the death of a thousand unanswered prayers - Bart Campolo

Today I spoke with Bart Campolo, who grew up as the son of a famous but controversial preacher. Bart got involved in ministry himself, but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims and practical experience of Christianity fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• As a child, admitting that the fantastical Gospel stories didn't make sense to him, but eventually, in his teen years, placing his faith in Jesus as his Savior.
• Having transcendent worship experiences at youth retreats that led him to think that he was sensing the Holy Spirit moving in him.
• Being groomed for leadership by his youth group leaders.
• Feeling driven to help those in great need so that he could truly care about them and give them a life purpose and a loving community.
• As a growing Christian, focusing his theology on god being the ultimate rescuer, hero, and healer.
• Facing a theological crisis as he became exposed to extreme urban poverty and violent crimes, while wondering why god did not intervene.
• Realizing the bizarreness and cruelty of the Gospel story and salvation message, and that because he was far more loving than the god of the Bible, he could no longer worship that god.
• As he deconverted, focusing on humanism where his meaning and purpose is wrapped around connecting with other people and helping them to thrive.
