The Fifth Estate

Cristiano Savioli travels from Italy to remote Cortes Island, B.C., in search of his father's killer. He wants to know why his father's murder nine years ago has not yet been solved, and he is offering a $10,000 reward. CBC obtains police reports that say investigators have a suspect, but there's been no arrest. And what Cristiano discovers is that some in the small, close-knit community don't seem to want the murder solved.
Part 1 of our investigation into the murder of Stefano Savioli aired in March. Watch it here: • Murder on Cortes Islan...

Dear Sophia: 1) Per Wiki, Cortes Island is 16 miles X 8 miles, rather small actually. 2) Population (2016) = 1035, pretty tiny. 3) The producer has lived on the island since he was 7, and still has a cabin there, yet the murder scene is so remote that a local had to give him directions just for this show. In other words, very few residents even knew where it was. 4) it's still possible that an outsider did it (even the Italian Mafia) but it takes 3 ferries to get there so access is very limited so that should narrow down any outsiders very quickly. -- It didn't take a Sherlock Holmes to figure out who the murderer was here, whoever that was. THEREFORE, it looks like the RCMP was totally incompetent in this case from Day #1. If residents don't want to talk then you drag them down to the police station and "sweat" information out of them. I sure hope that what happened is that someone in the RCMP got bribed to cover this case up, because the ugly alternative is that the whole RCMP were a bunch of incompetent clowns in this investigation. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

The new boyfriend saying "we have a new life and want to live that new life, the other life is done" (or something very close to those words) and the fact he said they don't talk about it and they don't care really came across as them knowing something or who did it and they just want to leave it in the past. This would not be so hard to figure out. Follow the money. This man lives in a remote location that is not easy to find. He is killed up in a loft, in his sleep. Whoever killed him knew this island and knew the layout of the home to be able to get there and sneak up on this man to kill him in his sleep! He brings this strong, social woman up from Cuba “that made the island hers”. He surely keeps up his abusive habits with women into this relationship. And then starts planning on leaving the island to go back to Italy. I don’t think the wife was wanting to leave...she was the island queen! I think if you followed the money you’d find a “loony from the boonies” that had made some money off of this murder. The wife is behind this. It is so obvious.*the quotes are from part one of this story

True People are usually killed by someone close to them, boyfriend, girlfriend, lovers husband or the spouse. I would put money on the wife and her lover at that time. When someone is killed in their sleep it's usually done at that time and in that way to avoid confrontation or because the murderer isn't strong enough to over power the victim so I would put money on the wife, she has the most to gain and loose if they divorced, she may even be asked to leave Canada...growing up in Cuba I'm sure she's seen many murders in her young life, so killing her husband isn't hard for her when she felt threatened....it's the wife

As a summer resident at Cortes Island this concerns me that the RCMP basically knows who it is and is just waiting for him to “slip up” again and then arrest him. But why wait for another persons life to be lost when it’s as clear as day who did it. We don’t know anything about this Nick Jordan (Samuals friend on the property the night of the murder) other then he didn’t answer any calls from CBC. Marco Fisch also sounds like one that is very aggressive when it comes to this case. It almost sounded like a challenge to come seek more information I dare you. The people of Cortes are kind folk but to turn a blind eye on this puts everyone in danger. Sounds like Stefano was a Street angel, house devil but two wrongs do not make a right and do the right thing so poor Christiano can begin the healing and put his unrest conscience a piece of mind. To keep this under wraps is a shame for the RCMP and Islander Canadians. Not very Canadian at all!

The fact that Cristiano's reward posters were removed over the following weeks definitely strikes me as VERY suspect. The new husband or boyfriend of the ex-wife of Cristiano's murdered father speaks rather incredibly, despicably, and surprisingly so. Threatening you that he'd fight you if CBC ever returned to the Island again, for this investigation anyway, definitely is part of why the guy spoke very incredibly. I think it may well be enough for the RCMP to question that couple, drillingly. But why on Earth would anyone of the Island remove those reward posters, again, is very suspect, and maybe it could be treated as obstruction of justice, if the police can ever find out who's guilty! Of course the police would need to first CARE enough to investigate this, as well. When posting these notices, Cristiano was surely acting withing his RIGHTS, and whoever removed those posters surely WASN'T acting within their rights! Samuel is also VERY strange, and I wonder what the evidence was that the RCMP found in the cabin Samuel and another were occupying on the same property the night of the murder, for it seems that the RCMP believed it was related or relevant to the murder. Some people are hiding some things, knowledge about all of this; f.e., the person who removed the reward posters remains unknown to others, but not to the person who did this. That fact, alone, is proof that some people there have relevant knowledge that's being kept secret.

"Strategically Inactive" in my mind means they pretty much know who did it but they can't prove it therefore they're running a covert/sting type operation. This means they may have an agent placed that will befriend the suspect and gain his/her trust and in time will set up a reason why that person needs to disclose the murder. Depending on the suspect it could take a very long time to establish trust. If the suspect was a criminal they could hire him to do false crimes and pay him money. The big boss wants to make him part of the crew but needs to know he's trustworthy and wants details about crimes he/she has done in the past. Once details are videotaped that only the killer could know they arrest the person. This is the reason the R.C.M.P. won't release details as to how the victim died. I can tell you the victim's killer hated him for some reason. The spray on the rafters happens when a knife in plunged in the victim time and time again. As the knife comes out it pulls blood and sprays it outwards. Much can be learned from blood spatter, right or left handed killer can often be determined. I think we all know who did this and why so I'll leave that part out.

I believe that the reason most of the islanders doesn't want the murderer to be found is because they knew who did it and feel the person is not a threat to them. Otherwise they would probably be very eager to get a murderer locked up or they wouldn't know who would be next. The story about mafia killing him, is probably a story they tell tourists so they will not be afraid visiting the island because mafia doesn't just kill random people.

Crime scene was too unprofessional to ever be a mafia hit. They don’t usually leave blood spatter all over the walls and themselves. I think the widow’s son is the most likely suspect given the history of the victim beating his ex’s. I don’t see why the ex girlfriend would lie about the axe story and beatings in her phone interview, she doesn’t have anything to gain and she sounded very credible to me.
