The Fifth Estate

3 жыл бұрын

The Fifth Estate conducts a comprehensive inquiry into the 13 hours of mayhem that constitute one of Canada's deadliest events. We hear from families of many of the 22 victims, and the terrible final moments their loved ones faced. Many questions remain about how the RCMP responded to the situation, and whether enough was done to protect the community. In one case, we show the RCMP was told of the presence of the shooter in a police cruiser hours before they acknowledged knowing this information. The piece explores the red flags police knew about with respect to the shooter, and presents a critical analysis of what went wrong on that April weekend.

Correction (Feb. 22, 2021): In this story, we incorrectly say officers jumped out of a cruiser outside the Onslow fire hall and began firing. In fact, Sharon McLellan told us it was not a cruiser and she believed it was a Hyundai. This update clarifies our note from Feb. 17, 2021, which read: In this story, Sharon McLellan is incorrectly quoted as saying she saw officers emerging from a "passing cruiser" and begin shooting at the Onslow fire hall. In fact, she said the men emerged from an unmarked vehicle.

More needs to be done then just a KZbin comment titled as an correction. A full disclaimer needs to be made at the very beginning of the video and/or during the Onslow-Belmont Firehall segment. You were graciously given eye witness testimony and failed to report accurately and sincerely. The public deserves a proper and truthful representation of the events of April 19th and 19th, 2020. This fact should not be glossed over.

Unacceptable. Mrs. MacLellan stated that a dark Hyundai pulled up to the firehall and two officers with assault rifles opened fire on the firehall! Why was this was this omitted in the final cut and rebranded an "unmarked cruiser"? What else was reported incorrectly?

No sharon told you it was a 4 door grey Hyundai, you chose to say a passing cruiser. My exact words were "a 4 door grey Hyundai like something my neighbor would drive" This is exactly why I was hesitant to do an interview. I knew the truth would not be told!

What is wrong with your news outlet? The only way the public could possibly be more upset about your lack of detail is if more of us are forced to contact the ombudsman and file a formal complaint. Sharon never said it was an unmarked car, not once, she specifically said it was a grey Hyundai. She wasn't unsure, she didnt say maybe it was unmarked. She said grey Hyundai. We assumed that when you admitted to your faults and stated that you would correct this mistake, that thousands of people were incorrectly informed on, that you would issue an actual public statement or entirely separate correction video as an added part of your series. This is a despicable misuse of a witnesses trust and time. As reporters, as THE news, your outlet should know better than to drag yourselves through the dirt like this. 2 officers, dressed all in black, with rifles, jumped out of a GREY HYUNDAI and lit up the firehall filled with civilians! Over 30 bullet holes in the siding, one in the engine block of a firetruck, and more randomly in the monument, garage door, and garbage bin from which they took cover. Gross miscarriage of justice and a near murder in itself for them to fill a civilian firehall with bullets...after jumping out of a Hyundai, not a passing cruiser and not an "unmarked" car. Get the facts straight. This is not a word playing game. People died and the RCMP almost carelessly killed even more. Reporting on the car they were driving, correctly, should happen without question, without dozens of civilians needing to be in an uproar about you playing scrabble with Sharon's statement, in which you hardly corrected anything.

This is a horrible documentary, it has gaps bigger than the Grand Canyon. For instance this crapumentary talks about the first three victims, then leaves out five victims, then talks about one victim, then leaves out seven more victims, then talks about two more victims, leaves out about four more victims and talks about the last two victims. It’s a horrible documentary like I said. My seven-year-old kid could’ve done a much better job.

Unfortunately the families most likely will not. The RCMP had their chance to stop Flight 182 Air India disaster and they did not, due to "funding". Up until this day this terrorist act is still not resolved, they only person convicted was pawn and was released in 2017. And on top of that, RCMP have let our "beloved" Prime minister greet Jaspal Atwal whom is linked ISYF that are known to responsible for the Air India disaster. Lessons learned, well no. Transparency is not in the RCMP book. Please accept my apologies for this comment, but this documentary is really hitting hard.

I take it you're not Canadian, as it was big news here. It happened this past April. I remember waking up to the news trickling in, in real time and I'm across the country from where it happened. It's been in the news ever since. The RCMP really bungled this one. I agree, the Twitter posts were pathetic. Obviously, the gunman was trying to create as much chaos and confusion as possible - especially with him disguised as an RCMP officer - but the early lack of response to the public caused many more lives to be lost.

@@incensejunkie7516 You’re correct. I am in Las Vegas, so I can completely empathize with the residents of the communities affected as my beloved city of Vegas became the hunting grounds for a madman as well. That being said, the attacks upon your fellow countrymen are easily significant enough to be international news, particularly to your allied neighbors. I find that very troubling, and another instance of the media dropping the ball. Believe me, when I came across this story, I thought it had just occurred. There were ARMED COPS on site at most of them. More guns = more slaughter. Do some research that isn't biased by conservatives and their thirst for violence (gun sales). The SYSTEM needs to change via education, not more potential violence. Guns are for cowards. Words, research, and logic are for the intelligent. The bad guy was mentally ill and had access to guns. 1+1=2.

EDIT: I did some further reading online after watching this, and there's a rumor that the shooter was a drug smuggler working as a confidential informant for the RCMP. There should be a full inquiry with complete honesty. The families should sue the RCMP, especially those who were killed that morning. The RCMP must put procedures in place and make staff aware of them for putting out media alerts. It’s unconscionable that they waited as long as they did. Domestic violence must be taken more seriously by the courts. People who have multiple grievances should be on a watch list or interviewed each time they make a complaint by police.
@_mnejing

The problem is that the RCMP is SUPPOSED to be putting policies and procedures in place, but they refuse to do the work. They're incapable of governing themselves, which is why a lot of police forces have civilian oversight, to limit protecting themselves. You don't let the inmates run the prison, and police (literally everywhere) are absolutely no strangers to protecting themselves at the peril of everyone else.

The US borders Mexico where drugs and guns flow illegally. Key term. Canada borders the US nowhere near the same reality of crime. The USA suffers huge gang violence due to horrendous Democrat policy in major cities. There was some kind of huge money transfer from the police to the killer about 1 month before the killing spree. There are some articles on Google 300K transfered to the killer. The police didn't give the info to the public until the press sued them to get it into the public. The press mentioned that it looked like a payment to someone in witness protection.

@@moimeself1088well sending out an alert to the public, when the mass shootings first started, would of definitely helped... @@sgrosse8507 i hear you, and i sympathise. I just wonder realistically how quickly they realised it was one madman on the loose. He always had an advantage. I'm not saying the police are blameless, just wondering how much they can be expected to control in this situation. 🤷🏾‍♀️

The gentleman speaking around 36 mins about his wife and unborn child, I broke down. I weep for all of these families and WHOEVER WAS IN CHARGE, WHOEVER MADE these decisions, FAILED THESE PEOPLE!! To say that man being in a police vehicle didn’t cause or add fault to this, is complete bullshit!! Who cares where he got the weapons, my questions would be why would you not alert the neighboring police forces and ask for help!! If someone let ego make their decisions, shame on them. This is WRONG on so many levels!! Mr Beaton, you FIGHT with these other families. God Bless you all, prayers from Alabama. You will all be in my heart.

@@russellg866 Wow. Well then, that makes sense. I used to live in Ontario, and I keep up pretty well with Canadian news, but this was brand new information. I'm stunned at the lack of communication from police to civilians. ..and equally appalled by the lack of action. Why no road blocks until next morning? Insanity.

@@mrmeerkat1096 Yes it was very weird, being a true crime buff and an east coaster (living in Ontario now) I remember constantly searching for information/updates and finding nothing except the RCMP conferences basically re-capping what happened at a very high level. Oddly, the only interviews from people in NS were on American news outlets. Thank God for the Fifth Estate, they are still pretty honest and respected imho.
