Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovich is about a mixed race police constable who stumbles into the nearly defunct magical unit of the London metropolitan police and learns magic. Very good supernatural police procedural story with a lot of flavor. Has genus loci like the new York borough spirits. Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is about 2 magicians competing by having their apprentices create attractions at a traveling circus. It's got a timeless wonder and right from the intro you'll understand why it's called "Le Cirque de Reves" or circus of dreams. Starlets Sea also by Erin Morgenstern is about PhD student in literature who discovers a hidden underground library accessed through magical doors All of these have excellent audiobooks!

The Dresden files are of the most misogynistic bs books I’ve ever had the misfortune to read. And don’t tell me it isn’t, because the author literally talked about it and admitted that ‘yeah it was a different time, it didn’t seem wrong back then’ etc. Having a main character who is looking at the corpse of a woman and makes comments about her tits in the first 30 pages of the first book of the series is a no for me and many other people. Most fans say it gets better by book 5 or 6, but I’m personally not about to pay money for 5-6 trash books.

You do know that if Harry got too far out of line Murphy would kick his ass The series is not for everybody and obviously near part of the demographic this book is not for and that's okay s@@mandarina4157

I JUST started reading The Infernal Devices for the first time! I had never read any Cassandra Clare, so I decided to read them in chronological order of the story timeline. I'm almost done with A Clockwork Angel. Absolutely loving it! I don't know how I missed this whole universe when it was first coming out!

@imeannoharm3241 That one's next on my list. 😃 I posted this original comment a year ago, and by now I have recently finished The Last Hours series a couple months ago and LOVED it, so City of Bones is next! (Once I get through a few more other books on my TBR 😅).

Someone I consider one of the first writers of urban fantasy is Charles de Lint with his Newford books (not a series so much as separate stories with overlapping characters all set in the same alternate time line). Also, two of my favorite urban fantasy series are Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and Seanan McGuire's October Daye books. Some stand alone older but great urban fantasies - Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and Emma Bull's War for the Oaks. All of these books are true URBAN fantasy as they are based in different city or metro areas.

Another great urban fantasy is The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott which brings a lot of Celtic lore and other mythologies to life. There’s a lot of alternate worlds and time travel and different kinds of magic. A bit confusing in the beginning but I loved it even though the ending I found very strange.

@@tbradby673 true and I agree the issue isn't diversity it's when you use diversity as the main selling point for a story. That tells me that ur pandering for sales and most often than not, stories that put racial and sexual diversity as their marketing and selling points are never good! Great even good stories don't have to use political and social justice antics to sell...
