You know I think the reason I watch your channel is because you never talk about the obvious. And I would say I rarely completely agree with you. Nevertheless you point towards interesting movies and ideas. Sometimes I feel I’m watching the psycho-sexual guide to filmmaking. My own perspective is quite other by comparison. But I really appreciate your thoughts nonetheless. I’ve seen many of the films you discuss and get an entirely different set of ideas from them. But nevertheless I am glad you are wrestling with films, with art, with meaning in a fairly serious way. Thanks. If I was going to recommend something it would probably be from extremely unfashionable sources. Primitive cinema (Edison, Porter, Melies, Starewicz) Or strange puppet films (Svankmajer, the Quays, Jiri Trnka, Jiri Barta). And then again I would love to get your take on something as breathtakingly dreamlike as The Saragossa Manuscript, Les Yeux Sans Visage or even Begotten. Or the works of Peter Delpuit. All of which I’m sure you’d connect with. But keep going. It’s not about agreement it’s about the discourse.

La Grande Belezza would be in my top 20, did not make my top 10 cut. The Tree of Life is waiting on my coffee table to be seen, waiting for the right moment. I very much expect it to be amazing. Phantom Thread, yes sir. Nocturnal Animals had a good look and feel, but it just felt like it was reaching for the stars but not coming close to the ceiling. Parasite is not for sale here in the Netherlands yet, so I havent seen it yet, the same goes for alot of 2019 films. Amour was a great film, again no top 10 for me. The other films on your list are unknown to me and I look forward to getting into them. My watchlist is just already pouring over as it is. I don't mind making a movie well about just being creative with it all......But you know, give me any Fellini, Ken Russell, Godard, Bunuel, Jodorowsky, Busby Berkely, Minelli, Demy even Noe - over this for me stylistically empty exercise.....yes anything could have happened in this movie....and wow, i was like - from all the choices you COULD have made, this is what Carax came up with ? Enter the Void is so unnecessary. First of all I really dislike people who do drugs and sell drugs to others, I find them all completely disgusting. Despite that this movie is so bad to a point that after Oscar's death, we can also call it phase two, the boredom from watching it takes over in a way that I couldn't fight back at it by searching interesting points or moments that I could grab to move on while watching it. It's very uninteresting to me and it's decaying story has nothing special in itself, it's mundane to the core it's just another display of human filth and disgrace, so what...many are. I hated it so much and of course I will never ever watch it ever again.

I like your videos and reviews, but I often feel your reviews remain more on the abstract side without touching any specifics. As an example, in this video, I got distracted and missed that you actually switched to review another movie, thinking that you were still reviewing the former movie, because there was no mention on anything specific. I hope you include more specifics in your reviews to back up your points with, and also give us more insights to how you have reached these conclusions. With that said, you are one of my favorite movie reviewers on KZbin and I watch all your reviews. :)

Boyhood was enjoyable but ultimatly not entirely my cup of tea i guess (love the before trilogy tho). I need to watch Kiarostami's work and i will check out House of Tolerance. It rewards attention, which is one of the highest compliments I could give any film. And love the way you talk about "Tree of Life" although I preferred "Knight of Cups" wherein Terrence Malick gives himself a tarot reading. Hello, my name is Steve and I love the deep, intelligence behind your reviews and list and how you're they affected you Spiritually, Technically, Emotionally and Mindfulness and are detailed in your thoughts and feelings! In a country of so many critics online, you're one who's finest kind! I thank you for your lists too, after a decade of injuries, surgeries, recoveries and even brain tumor surgery which I've survived them ALL and am slowly catching up on many movies, some that you've listed! I've two I'm wondering if you seen yet? One is Godzilla aka Gojira Minus one which deservedly won the Oscar for special effects and before you might think ohhhhhhh, a monster movie, it's more than that story wise, emotionally plus special effects wise that Hollywood could learn so so much from the filmmaker filming a movie on much less than $15 million dollars plus he is the writer, director and special effects director! It's such an emotional heartfelt movie, Stephen Spielberg said he saw it 3 or 4 times and gave the Japanese crew a standing ovation as did many in the crowd! Don't want to spoil it for you if you've not seen it ( please go and rap with me after if you want and can) too many things in it to see it's not just a Giant Monster movie! Go see it then review it, very few missed beats in structure, editing, story, direction to see! 2nd thing shortly after this!

@israelmcr4 жыл бұрын
@@cfbilly70 None of them offers something new, something fresh, something extraordinary. The most acclaimed in Birdman is its false sequence shot, that was done almost 80 years ago by Hitchcock in the Rope. The script is not the big deal, it only has good phrases, just that, nothing deep here, it is a fairly normal script. The Grand Budapest Hotel, yes, it is very beautiful visually, fun, silly, just like all Wes Anderson's films, it is entertaining to watch, but there is nothing else, it does not leave you more than a good time. True Grit is a good remake, it has a beautiful photograph, and good performances, it has its own style and that is something that I appreciate, but it is not an extraordinary western, it is good but no more. Drive is a film with very high pretensions that never fills, it tries to make the deep and does not give the size, it ends up being absurd, unreal, it takes itself too seriously. Inherent Vice, probably the worst PTA movie of this century. Biutiful is a work that feels empty (like all AGI cinema), without a soul. Django Unchained is an unnecessarily long movie, repetitive gags that we have seen before in other Tarantino movies, its classic robberies to other directors in scenes, everything is so seen and repetitive in this movie that even the name of the protagonist had to plagiarize it from the movies of Sergio Corbucci, and no, it's not a "tribute", it's plagiarism. Inside Llewyn Davis I just saw it three weeks ago, I had been told that it was very good, but I was very disappointed when i seen it, I liked Oscar Isaac's performance, but the movie opens so many sub-story arches that never closes. The whole movie feels in a hurry, it doesn't feel like taking a break, I think in the format of a TV series it would have been very good, there would have been a good development. I did not notice that you had also written Phantom Thread, this is a very good movie, great, personally, the 6th best of the decade. Beautiful visually, the photography is portentous, the great performances, a script without holes, and above all, the direction of PTA, reached a maturity that places it as one of the best current filmmakers.

Maybe you could upgrade to a better microphone. Sometimes I hear slight echo-y sound in your videos. You need one of those noise-cancelling mike, not only to deal with background lawnmower and what not, but also to make your voice sound fuller. I would say audio is 80% importance for your channel because this is primarily a commentating channel, so a new mike would be worth it.

Interesting. The only two I've seen are Certified copy, Very good, and tree of life, good, but for me not among his best. For me the only movie I would count as a favourite from the period is The Artist. But best and favourite don't always coincide. So The best one I would say Is Amour, closely followed by Shoplifters. The rest are just a list of some of some of the best movies I saw, that were released over that period. But i could have picked completely different ones. Some others. The Con Artists, Logan, Marshland, Brooklyn, The HandMaiden, Home from Home-Chronicle of a vision, Spotlight, Hanezu, The Connection, Children, Django unchained, Hemel. I wish, Only God forgives, Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives, Norwegian Wood, Source Code.

Nice to see a Bertrand Bonello film at the top of your list ! L'Apollonide, which is its original title, is indeed a very impressive film, but it is not for the faint of heart. There is a violent scene in it that still haunts me to this day... The ensemble cast, the powerful mise en scène, the emotional frankness of it all are staggering. By the way, I could use the same adjectives for one of the very best films of the decade : A Separation (2011) Asghar Farhadi. I am very surprised that no one mentioned it until now. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) (one of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had) Gone Girl (2013) Spider-man Into the Spider-verse (2018) Hereditary (2018) Big Hero 6 (2014) (unexpected *I have never laughed so hard in particular Baymax and Hiro's handshake*) Sicario (2015) (one of the most tense experiences in the theater) Wolf Children (2012) (heartwarming) The Skin I Live In (2011) (shockingly beautiful and shockingly disturbing) The Phantom Thread (2017) (now one of my favorite love stories) Inception (2011) (mindblowing) Her (2014) (broke my heart) Drive (2011) (one of the coolest film I've seen on the big screen) Ex-Machina (2014) (wow) Shame (2011) (sad but powerful) Snowpiercer (2013) Looper (2012) We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011) Mississippi Grind (2015) (one of my favorite films) Hanna (2011) (underrated) Boyhood (2014)(me too)

We Need to talk About Kevin, The Skin I Live In, and Hanna are 3 of the most underrated films of the decade. Fantastic films that don’t get talked about enough.

Phenomenal list and video, as always! So I know you weren’t really thinking in terms of 5s or 10s and whatever, but if you could add 2 more, what might those 2 movies be?

I see what you're saying about Boyhood, but the problem is that the actor who played the boy/young man was extremely dull and not a talented actor. I've seen him in other things; he's a terrible actor. he just isn't interesting and that's why a lot of people find the movie so boring to watch. I agree it's a creative and fresh approach to filmmaking, and yes you can make a good film without an exciting plot or conflict, but you need your lead character/actor to be charismatic, and interesting to watch/observe. And the actor who played the boy was the exact opposite, and that is why the film suffered to so many viewers.

I think the reason why I enjoyed Enter The Void was because of the opening scene. It sets the stage for what’s going to happen in the film.

Dang you're deep. I was hoping for some escapism films. This really should just be called best art house films of the decade LOL
@crappymcdick4 жыл бұрын
I have never understood the 'escapism' idea when it comes to film. Even movies like Harry Potter, Star Wars etc. They all have meaning messages and themes, although not very deep, I'd say very important for the youth.
@tfpp14 жыл бұрын
@@crappymcdick Since you mentioned youth, here's an example of my thinking regarding escapism (obviously, it can equally apply to adults, which is where I was coming from): If I have a young person read both the Twilight books, and something like Treasure Island or Huck Finn -- both clearly have "meaning messages and themes", but I think we would both agree that some messages are more profound than others. Similarly, if I ate junk food for dinner, I might not necessarily die from it, but I wouldn't feel great either, as it's not "nutritious" for me.
@crappymcdick4 жыл бұрын
@@tfpp1 So wouldn't you say 'feel good movies' is a better term?
@tfpp14 жыл бұрын
@@crappymcdick No. I wouldn't say I "feel good" after watching Twilight. But I would say I was entertained, or to quote Baloo I would say I forgot about my "worries and my strife". To contrast that, I don't "feel good" after watching Schindler's List. But I know how important and meaningful its message is. I think we're saying the same thing, I just prefer to call it escapism, and you don't. That's okay, too.

That part about the way you watch films hits home. I do the same with films and, especially, novels. I love it, and couldn't imagine consuming art it any other fashion; however, there is a part of me that wishes I could turn off that analytical part of my brain (or quell that deep yearning to deconstruct the art in order to understand how it works) and just experience a piece the way others do. That feeling lasts only a minute, before... "I love how the camera tilts ever-so-slightly to convey the subtle shift in power during this conver..."

I definitely wish to re-watch Tree of Life, which I saw in the movie theater when it first came out with my mom (who was bewildered, I remember her turning to me and asking during the prehistoric sequence: "What are we watching? Is this the same movie?!"). It evoked the same sense of mystery that "2001" did, what Gilliam said about watching it that you leave with more questions than answers (but in a good way)...I felt upon leaving the theater that it would be a film whose reputation would grow over time and one day be viewed as a 'classic,' though I guess that hasn't happened...yet. :)

Are there specifically lennial film Directors who reflect the YZ Gen better than say old school and Gen X directors ? It would be interesting to face off 3 against 3 teams of directors old school Vs Lennial . Sophie Coppola is the only one that I can think of right now . Is there one film in particular that says Gen Y-Z ?

I have two questions. First, do you have a regular column of movie reviews that appears in print or in any periodical online? Second, do you think you will ever do an essay(I think the word "review" implies too much recency for the my favorite fossilized celluloid) about the film "Double Indemnity?" And if not(I guess this makes three questions) do you believe that this film has been over analyzed or is no longer worth the attention of a new pair of eyes? And how about(egads! a fourth quesion) an oddball cult favorite like, "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers?" Would that be of historical interest only? Your uploads are the best things I have found on your chosen subject. Carry on , my dear. D
