This is probably pretty close to what I would say, but I really don't like Synecdoche, New York. Adaptation is closely related, and I think it's just better. Though, I do have a great appreciation for Kaufman really going for it on S, NY. I'm a huge fan of Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher. Huppert's performance is incredible. Maybe Yi Yi or Memories of Murder. In the Mood for Love is probably my favorite film of all time, hehe. EDIT: Though, I've only seen Synecdoche, New York once and it's probably worth the re-watch!

That comparison of There Will Be Blood to a John Ford or David Lean film was spot-on. Epic, yet intimate character studies focusing on relationship dynamics like many of their best works had as well.

One of the things about Zodiac that made it so impressive to me is the huge amount of information that is thrown at the audience while remaining completely riveting and galloping at a fast pace. It's a very dense, complex narrative but it breezes along in such an absorbing way.

The most powerful scene in Mulholland drive for me was where the woman is giving what i take to be a Spanish language version of Roy Orbison's: Crying in stage... Gradually draws you in until you feel almost overwhelmed by the rendition, and then, without warning, collapses, but the song carries on Stunning moment in cinema.

1. WALL-E Director Andrew Stanton's CGI paintbrush pirouettes its way into the ethereal with this post-apocalyptic May-December romance. Call it corny or ecologically preachy, it's still a technical and aesthetic marvel that's as well-directed as any live action film to date. 2. Zodiac David Fincher became the filmmaker to beat in 2007 as he pulled out every tool in his arsenal to create one of the most immersive, atmospheric, and thought provoking films ever about the nature of obsession. 3. The New World Poetic, philosophical, and historic. A companion piece of sorts to Mallick's own 'The Thin Red Line,' this bittersweet love story between Pocahontas, John Smith, and John Rolfe is a vibe within a vibe. 4. Hero Zhang Yimou's epic martial arts extravaganza is a stone cold masterpiece. Each fight scene is a ballet of colors, shadows, and movement that never lets up or fails to dazzle. 5. Capturing the Friedmans One of the most harrowing 107 minutes you'll ever experience watching a documentary. Equal parts fascinating and stomach churning, this real-life crime drama will make you want to take a series of hot showers immediately afterwards to try and get rid of the stench.

One of my friends sent me this quote about it from an essay (do not remember the writer): ""So at all times the film is underscored by both the attraction to the sublime, and, at the same time, the attraction to the obscene, to the shameful. There are these two tendencies that coexist in all humans, the one to the transcendental, the other to the abject. And the piano teacher, is the product of these two extremes." For better or worse, this is something I feel close to. Haha, the same friend really doesn't like Von Trier and I've been trying to convince them for years to watch Antichrist. Of the Von Trier films I've seen, I feel like, along with Melancholia, Antichrist is really watchable. It's the strength of Gainsbourg's great performance that makes it worth watching if you're not a fan of the director. Same with Dunst in Melancholia I think.

What about movies like Gigli, Battlefield Earth, Dragonball Evolution, Master of Disguise, Freddy Got Fingered, Son of the Mask? I was so happy when I rewatched Zodiac just a year or two ago. I hadn’t seen it since it’s release when I was in high school. And I didn’t remember it all that well, so I figured all those years there most have not been that much to it. But when I revisited it, I really was thrown for a loop. I think you’re right, it is absolutely his best film. It’s not perfect, there are moments that pull you in deeper than others, but there’s something about it. I rewatched it and it just stayed on my mind. A couple days later I felt the need to go out and find the blu ray for sale. And then when I finally saw you talk about it, I was extremely hyped lol “yes! She gets it!” Because I feel it is one of his films that gets lost in his filmography very often, when really it should be mentioned far more than The Social Network or Gone Girl. I understand the love surrounding Seven and Fight Club, but he really outshines with this film. His world building is astonishing. From the moment the opening credits roll and Three Dog Night’s ‘Easy To Be Hard’ begins to play and the fireworks over San Francisco for the Fourth of July, it pulls you into the sixties. The following shot from the car window showing the neighborhood that night really paints an amazing portrait of life at that time and brings you fully into that world. I dunno, I could ramble on for a while about Zodiac, but there is something unique and special about it within films of this century and particularly David Fincher’s catalogue. Something about it sticks to your brain like a thumbtack. The American ethos of the time, and the transformation of the American psyche at the end of the sixties. Just a very interesting time with a lot to capture there besides just the hippie movement.

@@ArtemSheverenov Nah. You’re kind of right about that, but it still works for me, even though the first and middle acts are much stronger. (Many criticised 28 Days Later-Boyle’s perhaps most acknowledged work-for also derailing into one long sequence of running between rooms and hiding from crazed killers.)

25th Hour- when he’s venting into the mirror, F this and F that, then his reflection confronts him and basically tells him, “No. You fucked yourself.” They should show that scene to troubled youths. Because that’s what awaits every young man who lets his emotions get the best of him.

I find myself speaking in lines of dialogue taken straight out of "Mulholland Drive." Something about how Lynch wrote his characters, even the minor ones (who never seem minor), makes me hang on their every word. That movie propelled me to rewatch "Vertigo" and to take in "Persona" and "Three Women" and now I'm even more in love with all of four them, and with movies in general. I also find myself using lines from "Michael Clayton" - another movie I can't seem to get enough of.

I’m a 66 year-old lifelong cinephile and when I first started watching your stuff, I thought “Who is this CHILD who thinks she has enough film and life experience to have a coherent viewpoint on film history and criticism?” Well, I stand corrected and have come to really respect your passion and your wisdom. I started this video thinking, “Oh, man, I hope she includes ‘Zodiac’”. Boom! You did and followed it with such an appreciative and smart critique. I so agree it is maybe Fincher’s best film to date. You feel as if you’re in the hands of a great director from the opening helicopter shot of San Francisco onward. The murder scene of the couple at the lake in broad daylight is handled so off-handedly that I gasped out loud in the theater. Fantastic. I don’t always agree with everything you say. For example, as far as PTA goes, I prefer “Magnolia” to “There Will Be Blood”, and try as I may, I just cannot get through “Mulholland Drive” without a crippling headache and overpowering nausea. It’s a testament to David Lynch’s skill/vision and the power of film in general, but it’s just too traumatic for me. I feel somewhat “violated” by it. I would add a couple of films to a list of the best from that decade, and again, they are both from 2007, an amazing year: Tony Gilroy’s “Michael Clayton” and the Coens’ “No Country for Old Men”. The former is one of the “cleanest” morality tales I’ve ever encountered, establishing George Clooney as a truly underrated actor. The final credit roll as he pays the cab driver to just drive "$50 worth" while he (and the audience) decompresses and we just watch his face and eyes… unforgettable. The latter film re-establishes (for the first time since "Fargo") the Coens as being true cinematic artists. McCarthy’s book was deemed unfilmable but they found their way in, partly due to the sheer aesthetic of the sound of Tommy Lee Jones’ voice in the narration and his weary view of the evil in the world as incomprehensible to a man of his age and life experience. A masterpiece of literary adaptation. Anyway, sorry for the length of my comments. Keep up the good work! I’ll be listening.

For me, the point of film is to project onto the screen and record as moving images all of our dreams, our nightmares, our fantasies, our hopes, desires, fears, memories, ideas, and imaginations... This is why I feel that so many mainstream blockbuster films are indeed the greatest works of film and cinematic art..... because they actually depict and put onto the screen what most of us only imagine or fantasize about, dream about, or have nightmares of..... I am well aware of the criteria of a great film according to the standards of film critics relating to the artistry and the methodology of filmmaking, but despite this knowledge, I hold to my own standard of what makes a film truly great and memorable..... This is my list of the greatest, most imaginative, influential and creative films ever made: (Note: I have put asterisks next to the titles of my absolute favorite films) The Cabinet of Dr Caligari Vampyr Metropolis (1927) Dracula (1931) Frankenstein (1931) The Mummy (1932) The Invisible Man (1933) *** King Kong (1933) The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) Modern Times (1936) The Wizard of Oz (1939) *** The Wolf Man (1941) War of the Worlds (1953) Seven Samurai (1954) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) The Hidden Fortress (1958) Vertigo (1958) Psycho (1960) The Exorcist (1973) *** Jaws (1975) *** Taxi Driver (1976) *** Star Wars (1977) Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) Alien (1979) The Shining (1980) *** The Empire Strikes Back (1980) *** Excalibur (1981) *** Clash of the Titans (1981) *** Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) The Thing (1982) E.T. Very surprised to hear Maggie select '25th Hour' as one of her faves from that decade, but it's a welcome surprise! Definitely one of my fave Spike Lee films. It's full of great scenes. The ending is very ballsy (all I can say is elderly Ed Norton). I remember after seeing it for the first time, I told my brother he MUST watch this film immediately, which he did. He normally hated my taste in movies, but he loved it. I slyly observed him as he watched the ending. He smiled and chuckled at how outrageous the ending is, but he also had a tear in his eye. This is a precious memory to me, but I would never ask him if he remembered this, because he definitely wouldn't, and even if he did, he'd deny it. It was nice to see that he could me moved like that by great art!

Memories of Murder (2003- Bong Joon Ho): This and Zodiac are the perfect double feature and honestly I could’ve put either one of them here. I just love the way this one handles our relationship with institutions, and how that affects our deepest obsessions. Much like Parasite, the social and historical dynamics are not only intelligent, but inseparable from the drama itself. The ending is also probably my favorite 4th wall break in any film. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004- Wes Anderson): For the life of me I don’t understand why people sleep on this one. It’s Wes’s best balance of sardonic humor, nesting-doll artifice, and reflective drama about the nature of storytelling that we all love about him. I think it mainly gets criticized for its looser pacing, but I kind of love how most of it feels like his version of a hangout movie, and it makes the emotional climax in the third act all the more effective. Goodbye, Dragon Inn (2003- Tsai Ming Liang): One of my favorite movies about the social and emotional power of cinema. Most of those tend to be too nostalgia-bait and heavy handed for me (e.g. Cinema Paradiso) but I think this one works because the style is in such contrast to something like that. The slow, almost mundane shots of interactions in this dying movie house so simply captures everything I love about going to the movies. And then the ending is almost operatic in its visual poetry that it ends up transcending the still, slow style it’s mostly been employing. 25th Hour (2002- Spike Lee): Don’t have too much to add to what you said, that was brilliant. I love how he uses the aftermath of 9/11 as a backdrop to explore what he loves and hates about New York, and the US in general. He visually infuses the look of the film with the light and shade of all of these seedy, vulnerable, reprehensible, and empathetic characters. I’ve seen a few people make the criticism that it doesn’t really feel like a Spike Lee joint in comparison to his others, but I don’t get it. Like some of his best works (Bamboozled in particular), the tone of the film can shift from hilarious to unbelievably harrowing without it feeling jarring. Freddy Got Fingered (2001- Tom Green): Only like 5% trolling here, I genuinely love this film. A perfect shitpost not only of the studio that agreed to finance it, but of the formula of the gross-out comedies of the time. Also just great gags, and immensely quotable. GET OUT OF MY GODDAMN SCUBA GEAR, YOU IMBECILE!
