My favorite Austen adaptation is the movie “Bride and Prejudice”. It tales place in India. The Bennets are Indian, the Bingleys are British, and the Darcys are American. You have the misunderstandings that happen not only because of interpersonal communication but also people from different cultures coming together. My favorite aspect of the movie is that it’s a blend of Western cinema and Bollywood. Just thinking about it makes me want to go watch it now!

I'm very much an Austen noob. I've read Pride and Prejudice twice and while I can appreciate the quality of the writing and loved the romance, I found it difficult to fully immerse myself in early 1800 social norms. However, I watched the 2005 adaptation of the book and fell completely in love with the story. Seeing the story play out on screen helped me truly connect with it in a way I didn't when reading the book. I loved how well it depicted class stratification and how it conveyed the enormity of Lydia's elopement. Being able to hear the exact tone and cadence of dialogue helped immensely in tracking the tension of scenes. I know it's not everybody's favourite but I adore it with my whole being. Watching that film and finally /getting/ Jane Austen emotionally has really motivated me to read more of her works.

The new Emma is probably my favorite Austen adaptation, closely followed by Love and Friendship, both are exceptional 👌 I so love Sense and Sensibility - have you seen Emma Thompson's award acceptance speech for that film? she did it kind of in character as Jane Austen 😅 PS: I think Love and Friendship is an adaptation of Lady Susan, it's not a different story...?

There are also some Austen book retellings by Sarah Price set in Amish country: 'First Impressions' (P&P), 'Second Chances' (Persuasion) and 'The Matchmaker' (Emma). I enjoyed them very much. One of my favorite BBC miniseries adaptions would have to be 'Emma' with Jonny Lee Miller as Mr. Knightly - just wonderful. Along with the youtube webseries you mentioned there was also 'Emma Approved' which was just great.

Congratulations on your first sponsored video! 😊 I must really get around to reading more Austen, I've only done Pride and Prejudice so far. I've started Northanger Abbey a couple of times, but always put it down. It is an idea I like the sound of, so I hope I'll get through it some day. I've seen a couple of the adaptations, recently watched the Emma Thompson Sense and Sensibility and enjoyed it. The position of those women in the society of that time and how they had such little control over their lives in so many ways due to circumstances was really interesting to me. The BBC Pride and Prejudice is definitely a classic, and I absolutely agree it holds up so well all these years later. Recently watched Death Comes to Pemberley out of interest. It didn't quite work for me, but I enjoyed a lot of the actors and how they played the characters; particularly Mrs Bennet and Lydia.

This video was perfect for me; P&P retellings/continuations are one of my favourite niche genres! For modern retellings, I really liked how Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld changed aspects of the story to make it fit the different context. I thought the author's take on Wickham was a clever choice, for example. There's also Vanity and Vexation by Kate Fenton which, while not really to my taste, uses an interesting literary device that makes it worth a read imo. Right now I'm actually rereading another retelling set during the canon timeline. It's called Gay Pride and Prejudice, by Kate Christie, and tells the story of P&P but with several of the characters (including Elizabeth) as gay. It tries to show a reasonably accurate picture of queer life at the time, but it does have a happy ending!

The only book by her that I have read is Lady Susan, but I know the main plot points of several of her novels. And the singing and dancing is cheesy but awesome at the same time.

Excellent video. 👌 I've only seen the '95 P&P with Firth (twice, both marathons :D) and I can't possibly imagine any other people as those characters. Although that said, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries was absolutely brilliant. I think I even watched it as it was coming out, and was reading all the tweets. :D I've only read bits of P&P and no other Austen, and I definitely wanna get to that, but I'm never in the mood. :/ And I've seen some other adaptations, but nothing really stuck as much as P&P. Oooh Heartstone is on my (very) long-term tbr. :D I really like your make-up btw. :) Which, mind you, is not something I say often, make-up is not my thing. :D

Whoop! I love me some Jane Austen, and definitely will be getting The Jane Austen Society. P&P is still my favorite, though S&S is a close second. You've already mentioned the tv/movie adaptations that I would put up front, so here are a couple other retellings in different media which were better than I had anticipated them being. Book: Pride, Prejudice and Jasmin Field by Melissa Nathan (it is not without some issues, but overall I have really enjoyed it time and again) TV Mini Series: Lost in Austen (2008) Movie: Bride and Prejudice (2004) And though I see Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld on a lot of lists, I thought it was horrible all around.

Okay, I must say this...I know you guys are all very young (I’m not) but no one mentioned the old, old original Pride and Prejudice movie with Greer Garson, as Elizabeth and Laurence Olivier, as Darcy. Yes, it is old-1940-but entirely excellent. I didn’t see it at the movie theatre, not quite that old, but it comes on every now and then on Turner Classic Movies. I’m a big fan of many of these updates, remakes and adaptations-love Clueless And Bridget Jones and PBS remakes, but if you get a chance, do watch the Greer Garson version. Everyone in the film is superb, imo. Great video, as usual. And I completely agree with everyone, you look stunning-and healthy! Stay safe.

I don't love the book, but I adore the BBC Northanger Abbey film! Jj Feild (my fav actor) is perfection as Mr. Henry Tilney (probably my favorite TV/movie period drama hero, followed by Mr. Thornton from the North & South BBC miniseries). The 2005 P&P is my favorite Jane Austen movie, with Matthew Macfadyen as my favorite Darcy. I also really love the miniseries Lost in Austen (my fav version of Wickham and the creepiest Mr. Collins). I've been really craving P&P retellings and fanfic stories lately. One I recently enjoyed on audiobook is Through Each Other's Eyes, which is a bit more modern in some ways but features a fun premise (Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth switch bodies!) and includes an alternate course/ending for the story that I really enjoyed.

Sense & Sensibility was my first true love in terms of adaptations. I was a nerd for Ang Lee films after seeing The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman so I was set up to adore Sense & Sensibility. Alan Rickman... All the feels. For Pride & Prejudice I actually enjoy the '95 BBC series only slightly more than the 2005 film, and probably simply because you get to spend a bit more time with the characters in the series. I remember liking the 1999 Mansfield Park movie quite a bit too, though it's been longer since I've watched that. Also the series Lost In Austen I remember being cute, but again it's been awhile. Though I guess this would be a separate category, I'm fond of some of biographical films about Austen. Becoming Jane (James McAvoy 💜) and Miss Austen Regrets, though Regrets was a bit more dark and realistic. I don't think I've read any Austen retellings in novel form except for Pride & Prejudice & Zombies. Should probably work on that.

Great video. I agree with pretty much everything you've said about adaptations and retellings. You should definitely watch the new Emma, it is so good. Rivals Emma Thompsons Sense and Sensibility (which is my favourite adaptation as well). Have you seen Lost in Austen? This was a super fun TV series. The premise was that a modern Austen fan finds a portal time machine, as does Lizzie Bennett, and they sort swap places. The show mostly follows the modern fan and she sees a different version of the novel from what was actually written, stuff behind what was happening that we don't actually know about. I don't think I described that very well. It was fun, not my favourite thing, but worth checking out. Thanks for the recommendations, excited to read The Jane Austen Society, and Unequal Affection, love myself a good Austen retelling.

I stille have a lot of Austen's books to read, but Pride and Prejudice will always be the best. And when there are retellings/inspirations of Austen I will always watch it. Lost in Austen is a favorite of mine, a person from the modern time travels to the time of Pride and Prejudice and because she loves the book, she is trying to help the romance between Lizzie en Darcy. I really should watch it again because the first time I couldn't stop talking about it.

Not sure if you have managed to read Mansfield Park yet, but there is a fabulous (from Acting point of view) adaption bbc mini series 1980 which I recommend - once you have got over the akward film angles and carriage sounds overshadowing dialogue and accept it was of its time it is a brilliant adaption of the book and those fun Love to hate or silly characters Austin does so well. I also appreciate the costumes as they transform from late 1700 are to regency style and who is "the fashionable gentleman" and who is not. The 1999 film was more a mix with Austens early writing "Juvernille" and Fanny a mix of Fanny and what they imagine Jane Austen was like. So it was an interpretatuon to appeal to a more Hollywood audience. Where as 1980 was more faithful exploration of the book and the characters.

There aren't too many Jane Austen tv and movie adaptions I don't like. I too am actually a big fan of the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film. It's incredibly watchable and I am really fond of Jena Malone's Lydia and it's nice to see Carey Mulligan before she became a big actress in her own right. Plus I love Matthew Mcfayden, so for me it's a winner. It's such a pretty movie too. You have to allow film adaptions inaccuracies sometimes. Like, yeah sure the Bennets are protrayed as far less genteel than in the 1995 adaption, but what does it matter? I like having both the 95 and 05 adaption to watch depending on what mood I am in. My 2 favourite adaptions must be the two BBC adaptions that were done in 2008/2009 - Sense and Sensibility and Emma. I love both of those so much, and I rewatch them most years to be honest. The 2020 Emma movie is also fantastic, it's bright and colourful and whimsical. They really do get the comedic aspects of the story. I like differing styles in adaptions because there are many more traditional Emma adaptions so why not something slightly different? I think Jane Austen would approve of 2020 Emma.

I really hated the ending too. I think that they had planned it to be Season 1 and hoped to do a Season 2 but with fans getting annoyed by the ending, they won't get a Season 2. That is a stupid way to do it. Show makers should never count on getting another season and should end Season 1 in such a way that it could be The End.

I'm looking forward to The Jane Austen Society book. it's on my to-buy list. It reminds you of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society -- which I read and saw as a movie -- and also loved, but what it's putting me in mind of is a wonderful movie that also is a homage to Jane Austen: Karen Joy Fowler's The Jane Austen Book Club. I have not read the book, but I saw the movie and LOVED IT. Just loved it. Can't say any more. Wonderful movie. Of the movies that are direct interpretations, I think my choice for the most stellar is Persuasion starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. Such a heartrending interpretation. It broke my heart and made me appreciate this book so much more. As for pure Hollywood, I love the Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam Emma. Finally, I 100% agree with your mention of Clueless, which is pure fun *and* The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, the KZbin series is so wonderful. I bought it in DVD form so I can enjoy it forever. I read "Heartstone" as well and I agree that it is very good. Since you like "Heartstone", I would recommend that you read a series by Maria Grace called "Jane Austen's Dragons". The first book is titled "Pemberley: Mr. Darcy's Dragon" and it is sort of in the same vein as "Heartstone", in that it is based on a world of dragons, but it goes about the premise very differently, but just as well done in my opinion. This is a favorite series of mine that I read through again every time another book in the series comes out.

I can never stop raving about Awakened Hearts by Susan Potts (it was originally a 'normal' fanfiction and was later published on Amazon www.amazon.de/Awakened-Hearts-English-Susan-Potts-ebook/dp/B06ZYJYF9B/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&dchild=1&keywords=awakened+hearts+susan+potts&qid=1588185103&s=digital-text&sr=1-1 ). It's set after P&P and follows Mary's journey how she gains confidence and gets 'people skills' from living with the Darcys for some time (and meets a man who wasn't in the original cast) and it's perfect and beautiful and I love it.

Do you have a link to the book so that we can order it and you can get "credit" for your reader's purchases?

I really like Bridget Jones Diary as a (I guess) retelling of Pride and Prejudice and, of course, Clueless for Emma. Mansfield Park with Frances O'Connor was also a good adaptation. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies can just disappear from the face of the earth.

Haha I’m not mad at P&P& Zombies but only because it just felt like it’s own deal and not really too moored to the original 😅

For readers who have never actually read a Jane Austen, do you think the retellings and adaptations do a good job of encouraging you to give the actual source a try? I know classics can seem really intimidating yet Jane Austen is an author who has truly stood the test of time but she also gets bunched in with classic authors whose works people assume will be too dense and hard to relate to. So do you think if someone were to read some of the retellings or watch some of the films that they’d encourage you to actually read her, or is it more, you’re able to appreciate the retellings after you’ve read her novels? (I hope this makes sense!)

Yes, I do think retellings/adaptations can be a good gateway to the originals-- one of the things that I think holds people back from diving into classics is the perception that it's irrelevant or unrelatable to them. These interpretations of classics makes them more approachable & helps modern audiences see themselves in the stories... at least that what I think! :)

The Jane Austen Book Club - movie is better than the book - is by far my fave.

Would you be so kind as to recommend a reading order for the Jane Austen novels? I have read various accounts and others that say its doesn't matter what order just read them all. A reply here or if you want to make a video about it that would be great too. (wink, wink) much love, amy

I honestly think it's hard to go wrong... I think Pride & Prejudice, Emma, or Persuasion read best to modern language use, but beyond that-- just dive in!
