Thanks! Spending a lot of time shooting in high wind I've noticed that strap vs no strap makes a negligible difference since the camera & tripod takes way more wind loading than the strap. This assumes the correct shooting technique is used (included below) Wind facing surface area of the camera, lens, & tripod is way bigger than the strap so you might get a slight reduction by taking the strap off but it won't solve the camera shake issue so you need to make changes in shooting technique to solve the issue or your images will be out of focus with any wind at all. An analogy. Walk directly into high wind with your arms tucked directly in front of your body. Now do it with your arms to the sides of your body in the wind stream. You will feel more wind load over all with the arms to the side by it's not much more. You may not even notice it. Your arms are the camera strap. Your body is the camera body, lens, and tripod. Here are my steps for any windy shot. Images always end up sharp and the strap is always on. 1. Time your shots when there is no wind. Notice in the video I never have a shot go off when the wind is blowing. 2. Shoot at faster shutter speeds approx. 1/focal length works well on the conservative side. 3. Always check focus after each shot up the entire vertical of the centerline and 4. take at least 3-4 shots of the composition when shooting in any wind at all. I'll review my images this Sunday since everyone is asking this question. All are sharp. No issues.

I have a Peak Design camera strap that I can remove and install in seconds. I think the camera has less shake without the strap wafting around. Even when the wind is only mild.

The way you enjoy landscape photography feels very familiar to me. I'm not on your level yet but spending a week out exploring and camping either in the wild or in my car is pure bliss. That is true freedom for me. Being able to go where I want to, when I want to and seeing the beauty nature has to offer. Love it!

What you say about exploring the wilderness along with your own limits make me wonder: am I the only one feeling uneasy alone in the wild at night? Could you talk one day about how to overcome the fear of darkness? The thought of my own vulnerability, blind in the dark, alone in my fragile tent, stops me from life changing experiences which so many people seem to enjoy.

Love this area. Camped there twice. You were smart to not stay in the wind -- I made that mistake, also during a very dry time of year, and woke up buried in a layer of sand that covered me and everything inside my tent. Not the best experience! This was on the exposed outcrop by the first glacier. Anyway, QUESTION: any fear of bears? Last September I got woken up by a bear outside my tent at night in the Olympics. I tried to make myself known by talking calmly, but it must have gotten surprised so there was a lot of jaw popping and huffing. The volume and proximity were pretty terrifying. (All scented items were in an opsack inside a bear can far away.) Have to say, I have a bit of a fear since then, even though risk is statistically low.

Absolutely. I usually take the images I really care about before / after the video & will wrap it on my tripod. My new camera has a small cord for a strap, which I think might be a better method.

I haven't switched to a mirrorless camera yet. I currently shoot (since 1984 actually) Nikon, but with their financial troubles lately do you see a long term path for Nikon to pull out of this downward spiral they find themselves in over the last year or two. Great views Dave! The vibration you were getting was enlisting the help of your camera strap, straps are inherently grouchy. The wind wiping it around couldn't have helped loo. I set a rock on mine to tighten and add stabilization, or remove it.

Hello Dave, still using your Nikon D810? I saw another video where you had a Nikon Z7 if I am not mistaken? Using any solar gadget to charge your batteries? The cold must drain them quite fast? I thought if you had a medium format how detailed the images could be? I hope you are also making some good sales on these unique images? They would definitely dress up some large murals for anyone buying them. How do you manage hydration when moving on trail? When backpacking I often drink while moving. It looks like you seem to have to stop in order to drink? Or is there a way you still hydrate while moving? Would be curious to know!

Great question. That tent weighs 1 lb and it's a 2 person. Zpacks Duplex. It's not fun to wait out a 3 day storm in a 1 person tent, trust me:)
