My Favorite Lens
So often we struggle with carrying around an arsenal of lenses. I try to keep it simple and light and for the last year I find myself continually turning to one lens more than any other. And, that lens is my Sony 100-400mm G-Master lens. While the gear of my choice with this lens is the Sony a9 and A7r III you can use the Canon 100-400mm lens or the Nikon 80-400mm lens which I use with my Nikon z7. Or, for that matter the 100-400mm Fuji lens which I just love when used with the XT3 or X-H1.
Essentially, it is all about the zoom range capability of the lens and what this lens allows you to focus on. I love shooting the picture in the picture. I also like the fact that I am not over focal lengthed. What this means is that a subject is too close for a long fixed focal length lens.
So, if you have a lens like this then mount it to the camera and discover what it is like to shoot with this zoom range. If you don’t have one consider borrowing or renting the lens to see if ir is a fit for you.

Great review. I have and "love" my 24-105. Was debating between the 70-200 and 100-400. I didn't want the overlap and was leaning toward the 100-400. You have helped me make the decision.

Darn you! I’m currently out on my back deck. Seconds ago, I took some very nice pics of one of my fav birds, a Tern, using my GMaster 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens. Then, I loaded up your video, and found even nicer Tern pics! Thanks for a great review. I too have a 24-70mm f/2.8 G Master, and love both!

I recently picked this up, and mostly use it for sports with great success. I can get some great distance using the built in APSC crop function and it's very sharp and has excellent autofocus with the A9. My only issues are it's a bit TOO lightweight, and the zoom ring even on full loose is still a bit stiff making it difficult to rack zoom while handing holding, especially compared to the 70-200 GM.

I am just about to pull the trigger on this 100-400 to go with my 24-105. Those two make an incredible combination to cover shooting virtually anything. Then may later add a tele converter for bird photography. Can I ask why you chose the 1.4x over the 2x? Was it just the aperture penalty?

Kevin do you find this lens with 1.4tc to slow the apeture too much at f8? I love the lense but occasionally need more reach for birds. I know Sony just announced their 200600G lense which tops out at 6.3...but I feel that lense is wildlife specific...and not as versatile as a 100400. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay, I have been launching the photopxl.com website. I haven't had any issues with the extender getting good shots. I usually shoot n Manual with the shutter set for say 1000th sec and f/ stop at f/8 and then use auto ISO. I sit on my deck photographing birds this way and it works great. The High ISO capability of these cameras is very good.

I have the A7iii. I’m really interested in this lens, but budget is an issue. Do you (or people in the comments) have any opinion on the Sigma 100-400mm? I really want to get something with this sort of focal length, to mainly try out some surfing and animal shots, but the Sony is more than I can afford at the mo. The Sogma is a more realistic price. Will it suffice? Or is it better to wait till a later date when I can raise some funds for a Sony?

I have used the lens for almost a year on the A7iii and it is absolutely my favorite lens. I went with the Sony because I wanted to shoot hand held and the lens has image stabilization. I just upgraded to the Sony AV and haven't had a chance to try the lens on it yet.

Light weight? Seriously? (You said it twice.) I like your review but it's not light weight and people considering this lens should know this. I realize that it's somewhat subjective. You appear to be a man of good size so perhaps it isn't that heavy … for you. Other reviewers speak of this being a heavy lens and I agree.
