My favorite Lever Gun: Winchester 92 in 25-20 Win

A look at the Winchester Model 92 in 25-20 Win. An easy shooting, do it all farm rifle. The 25-20 was a very popular cartridge in the early part of the 20th century. It could be dispatched to handle varmints to protect the farm as well as put deer meat on the table.

Nice rifle. I have one. I reload for it. I got mine when brass could be found. I don't know how many empty rounds I have . some I necked down to .224. The 218 bee. The model 92 in 25 20 is very accurate. I am thinking of relining the barrel. I bought it used in 1972. It was not kept clean and the rifling is rough. I have bullet mold however the bore is not good for cast bullets. It shoots really accurate with 45 gr jacket Hornady flat point bullets.

Of the guns I own it would be one of the last to go. $100 for 50. It’s not obscene. But still, $2 per squeeze.

The 92 winchester came in four calabers. 44 x40. , 38x40 32x20 and 25x20. Some 25x20s were necked down to .224. Called the 218 Bee. Wildcat round.

I reload my own 25-20, 32.20 & 44-40 for around 7 cents each ( that’s because I cast my own projectiles ….. 32.20/ 115 grn GC at 1950fps a 25/20 85 grn GC @ 2050fps and a 44.40 205 grn FB at 1550 fps all are deadly accurate out to 200 yds

Have the same rifle, but reload for it... have about 500 rounds ready to go.. the factory bullet lipstick ed on you... wasn't crimped properly...just keep track of your empty cases... they are precious...!!

I’ve been gathering them up! Each and every one. It’s disappointing to pay $80 for a box and they aren’t loaded properly at the factory.

The ammo is outrageous but maybe check with Natchez or Midway. Dad had the 25/20 from Marlin. Usually only have 60gr or 86gr if you can find it. It's big brother 25/35 was longer & had 2x the energy. It will work for deer but probably keep shots under 100yds because of low energy. Great for coyotes but at 2 beans per round it ain't cheap. Nice 92! After doing some looking might be better off buying reloading dies. Very scarce & sky high on cost even for black powder loaded.

The 92 is better and stronger design than the Winchester 94 and Marlin/Ballard designs. The old 256 Winchester cartridge based on a 357 necked to 25 caliber was even better than the 25-20. A western style tube feed lever action needs to be made in a varmit cartridge.

When getting down to really accurate. Lever guns cannot compete against bolt actions of the same calaber. The harmonics ot the action, combined with the forend grip, magazine tube. Disturbs the harmonics of the barrel making the rifle throw flyers. Just a sad fact.

Also the 25x20 was a varmint Cartridge of its day...
