So often I see Valheim builds that just go in a totally different direction than I would go myself. Or lacking consideration of key elements that I always keep in mind. I respect that their aims are different, that's fine. But those builds just aren't for me. Your build here, however, wow. From the moment you said "I always like to build my houses along water, facing south..." I knew I'd be in for a treat. That's exactly how I build all of my houses, from the first one to the last. This game does such an amazing job at lighting, if one doesn't let it showcase that, they're missing out. I also totally relate on the process of 1) seeing a new concept/build idea 2) trying it out 3) iterating upon it. Love that about this game! I've put nearly 1400 hours into the game since December (yeah...) including several Queen kills, even one completely solo. I always look for great south-facing water spots to setup a mid-game base (meadows near a big swamp) and end-game (plains + mistlands border). I do a lot of sailing because I don't want to waste the time building a place where I wont want to stay. Sure it can take a while, but I end up with tons of serpent meat! I currently have an amazing spot in this really cool mix of Black Forest, Plains, and Mistlands that intersects two river valleys. There's multiple spots where you can build on a cliff overlooking the valleys, with the black forest to the south for the sunlight to play with. I bet you'd love building here. Obviously all Valheim seeds are good, but I'd be happy to share this one if you're interested :)

Lol "Before I knew it, I had a surprise balcony on my hands" I feel that. They add so much depth to a build that its hard not to put at least /one/ in there. I think my biggest frustration with fun, creative builds, is that functionally or mechanically they struggle to actually provide shelter. I Love the look of ladder roof sections, or gridded awnings but if you're doing it in survival it ends up being a form over function deal. (Admittedly, I just need to take the time to finish the game so I have all the mats and can then just pick random corners of the world to build in).

Just play however is fun to you! In "full" survival mode, especially on shared servers, I build off the ground, build scaffolding, etc. One of my favorite builds was on a shared server that involved planting a bunch of pine trees in a very meticulous pattern in order to provide support for a bunch of honeycomb criss-crossing wood beams very high up. The scaffolding for that one was the equivalent of doing a full build by itself and was super fun! When I do solo survival runs these days, though, my preferred method is to compartmentalize the survival gameplay from the building. Sometimes I just want to build freely, so I do so because I find it so much more fun. When done with the building, back to survival mode to gather and farm everything needed to progress manually.

I like the garden. It's beautiful. I like when things just fall into place during a survival playthrough. I like to keep building down to a level where it's not prominent in my playthrough, otherwise it gets overwhelming and out of control. My friends however have little sense for style, and they like their bases to work like a conveyor belt; chests all in one plac, named; crafting tables all in one place, with upgrades hidden from view; trees planted in dangerously close proximity to the base just for convenience of getting wood. I'm thinking the game is just not for them, which is a shame. The combat and exploration is very fun in a group.

I just got into Valheim and I'm playing through in VR. It's pretty incredible how beautiful structures look in game in the first person and can only imagine how great your build would look. As someone just learning to work some of the more nuanced mechanics of the game, a more explicit tutorial would be greatly appreciated. Your video was fun to watch but I would have like to see the smaller bits like how you manipulate terrain, how you line building pieces up, and even how you might be willing in the middle of a build to scrap an idea and start over, such as with your bridge.
@HomituАй бұрын
First, let me just say welcome to Valheim :) The game must be crazy in VR! I totally get the desire for a step by step tutorial. There are so many great builders who create exactly those kinds of videos! This video was done in this way for 2 main reasons. First, I was trying to be a little different from all of those other builders and experiment with a bit of storytelling style of video. Second and certainly more importantly, this was truthfully a fresh survival playthrough at the time. I did not intend to build something elaborate at all, and thus was not recording any of it. It all just...kinda happened lol. But I had no footage at all of the build process. Once I loved the finished product and decided I wanted to make a video, I had to figure out how to tell the "making of" story after the fact. I used the screenshots I had taken along the way to aid in that. I also went through the work of creating a copy of the same exact virgin world file, so I could go back to the same location without any buildings in it to create the beginning of my video. I demolished a few parts to rebuild them for the video only when absolutely necessary. And I completely copy/pasted the whole house on a flat area of the coast somewhere to showcase some roof demos. A lot of completely extra work just to make a video like this! So definitely thank you for viewing a year later!

@Homitu Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Everything with the exception of the plants is vanilla. (Here's to hoping the devs allow us to plant those basic plants naturally some day...) Flying and free-building is part of what is called "creative mode." This should get you started if you're interested in that: gameranx.com/features/id/284935/article/valheim-creative-mode-quickstart-guide-how-to-start-building-fast/ I tend to do builds like this in creative mode, then return to survival mode when finished to continue my progression in the world.

The build is amazing the editing, and speed of the video is perfect not too fast or slow where I'm wishing you moved on. New subscriber here just one question. If this is a survival playthrough build how do you prevent 2 Troll Riad from destroying the house? I see so many videos on just base defenses.
@Homitu11 ай бұрын
First, thank you SO much for that feedback! Those are all of the exact things I worry about when editing a video and trying a new style like this out for the first time. A lot of the editing and scripting goes into trying to make sure the video keeps moving along before it starts to feel boring or before viewers start to want to push the fast forward button (like I do in a lot of the videos I watch.) So thanks for calling the pacing out ☺ Re: base defense, I've been playing Valheim for a LONG time at this point (about 1.8K hours). I have zero reason to fear raids at this point - especially early game raids. Trolls are a piece of cake to deal with as soon as I have a bow or a good knife if I'm well rested and have stamina to do dodge rolls. If a troll RAID starts, I simply walk away my base. The trolls follow the player; they don't just stand around and rampage your base if you're not in there. So just walk away, lure them away, and fight them outside the confines of your base. They only spawn 2 at a time, so it's not bad. I don't want to take away from raids in the game. They were SUPER cool early on. My friends and I were just like most players, legitimately terrified of raids and trolls specifically. We built moats, walls, the whole gamut. It's the intuitive thing to do. It can also still be FUN to play like that - and there's a reason videos like that are successful. (Hmm, maybe I try my hand at a well designed, aesthetically pleasing base defense build? 🤔) But with a little experience, I genuinely don't find defenses necessary anymore.

@Homitu10 ай бұрын
Hey - thanks! So the white (or any color, I just chose white because it's more visible and not obnoxious) text is AzuSigns by Azumatt, a popular modder with a ton of good mods. I did not place the text on the boxes however. I still just used regular signs. I just placed the signs down first and then built the boxes slightly over the signs. The text on the signs actually "floats" ever so slightly in front of the wood of the sign. So you can place it in such a way that the sign is hidden but the text is visible. No mod for that, just a building trick ;)

Although everyone plays as he (she) sees fit, a bit of malice from here: Using devcommands - especially the debug fly mode - is not survival mode. Go, build scaffolding and die from falling: that is survival mode. :) Hearth and for some extent, braziers too, are more of iron age objects than bronze age ones - but we may say you were just at the beginning of the iron age road. But you cannot have any eplanation regarding the misthare rugs. :D Now, malice mode off. Really inspirational build, and a great showcase of Valheim's build capabilities (official and unofficial ones) and of course, your imagination and expertise. I'm also a big fan of open interior concepts, so your advice regarding interior levels fell into fertile soil here. Kilns are so bulky, sometimes I have problems just simply placing them - your simple, yet elegant solution deserves an award, no doubt. And I loved the whole video - please, publish more!
@Homitu Жыл бұрын
A man after my own heart with that kind of detailed comment :) First, thanks so much for the kind parts of your comment! lol Now onto your terrible slanderous remarks :P Indeed, everyone plays the way they find most fun, and after 1,500 hours in Valheim, I've figured out what that is for me :) I've played several full pure survival runs, including on 3 different shared servers where I farmed for mats, built crazy scaffolding for ridiculous builds, etc. On my solo runs, however, I LOVE compartmentalizing the survival part of the game from the building part of the game. I have fun progressing through all of the game's survival stuff, no devcommands or debugmode. I farm and gather everything I need to craft and upgrade crafting stations, weapons, armor, food. Even early game, where gathering wood and stone to build a shelter is a core part of surviving, I gather all that naturally to build my basic shelters. Literal full regular survival playthrough. But then sometimes the desire to just BUILD hits! So I put a hard pause on survival mode, turn on creative mode for building, and just go for it. When inspiration really strikes, I get lost in this part of the game and absolutely do not want to be hindered by having to constantly pause to gather. The existence of creative mode has truly unlocked a creative side of me that I didn't even know existed, and I'm genuinely grateful for it. This was 100% a CREATIVE MODE build. But I tried to keep it constrained to Bronze Age materials purely out of the fun of it, (though ultimately added the hearths, jute rug, hare rugs, braziers because I thought they're decorative value exceeded the importance of upholding my silly self-imposed rule :D). My favorite part of doing this is now that I'm back in survival mode, I have an awesome bronze base that feels great to return to. So much more fun than just building creative in a random world that I'm not using!
@bencampbell104 Жыл бұрын
It's really helpful for me to read your thought process behind creative vs. survival. I tend to be a "survival purist" in games, and feel like I'm cheating if I'm not farming everything by hand. That said, your builds have so many details and components, that I often found myself thinking, "Oof, that's a lot of _______ to kill/chop/find." If I'm being honest with myself, I don't think I have the patience to chop down hundreds of trees or kill hundreds of deer or fall off scaffolding without burning out. I think your self-imposed limitations/exceptions sound like a lot more fun, while not fully losing out on the spirit of survival.
@Homitu Жыл бұрын
@@bencampbell104 Yeah, that was exactly the realization I had. I totally understand the survival purist mentality, as that was my default as well. But at a certain point, I realized that self imposed restriction was hindering my enjoyment of the building component of the game. So I made personal adjustments that suited me. I also fully recognize the dangers of being too free with devcommands to early on one's journey. If you allow yourself to just go ham with spawning stuff from the very beginning, I think you'd lose a lot of vital perspective on the awesome progression Valheim offers. In an opposite way, that too would ruin much of the FUN of the survival portion of the game. If you give that style a try, let me know how you find it!

@@keblin86 Ha, totally get it! I think Valheim is rough for every player the first go around, which instills a heavy dose of paranoia in us :D This was absolutely how my friends and I built on our first shared server back in 2021. However, when I tried my first solo server after that and wanted to build a sprawled out mega base with as few terrain modifications as possible (to save on instance count back then), I did away with moats and fences and everything was surprisingly fine. Years later with even more experience, I don't even flinch at a raid. I'm always prepared in terms of food and gear for whatever level of the game I'm at. I just yawn, slowly walk outside to lure the enemies away and then calmly kill everything as slowly or quickly as needed. The game starts to feel really easy in general over time. it's all about knowing the enemies and being prepared!

@@Homitu Yup! It's funny going back to nothing and playing again. The game is really hard at first, for example when you get to a new biome. Though more so with other players. The difficulty is much harder on normal enemies! Though it's the opposite on bosses. They are too easy with friends. Where as in solo, I find the random enemies easy but the bosses harder! It's funny playing with my friends as I can see them getting stressed and saying this is ridiculous in terms of difficulty lol, but I told them, just wait, honestly everytime you get to a new biome it's hard then once u get a few upgrades it's easy. Like the firs time you get to the swamp the enemies can wipe you out so fast if you're not careful, well even if you are careful lol but by the end of the swamp with iron upgrade they are nothing. Then you move onto the mountains and the fun starts all over again lol. I love this game so much. I see people get stressed, annoyed or quit at points like this but for me this is the fun of it, get stronger like an RPG, become like a God in that zone, move to new zone. Repeat! I haven't done the mistlands yet but had a little peek and again same situation. The enemies are super tough but I know eventually they won't be once I get some upgrades. The only thing I don't like so far about Mistlands on my seed is pretty much 90% of it is water, mountains or just not very good areas to stand on lol. I was fuming too because I thought the mist and darkness was always there but I was like "there must be some item to clear it surely". I haven't gone back yet but sure enough there is an item to do that, so I can't wait to go back in :D - Except I am currently obsessed with building a massive kingdom like base in a creative mode lol.
