Hey Rachel! I would love to see you do a colour swatch and further mixes of this palette for your viewers. I'm not sure if you mentioned that the whole point of Ali's QoR palette is for portrait painting mixes, skin colours, hair etc. Of course you can use for other interesting mixes, I know because I've done probably every conceivable mix of colours/strengths etc with this palette for a time now. I'm lucky enough to know Ali as my mentor and I'm one of her long standing "Aligators" in her watercolour community. We're an international bunch of watercolourists at every level from starter to professional. As a portrait artist that's only just getting into pet portraiture I love watching your videos and so when it popped up that you had Ali's palette I thought it was brilliant. I love it when my watercolour worlds collide! I just wanted to let you and your viewers know that this palette is not like other mixing palettes in that a very little goes a long way with portraiture. Within our group we tend paint on watercolour board (homemade or Aquaboard) not paper and the colour mixes are used very watered down over many layers. Of course, that's not how you "have" to paint with these colours, is just the way they make the most sense. I also use these colours for some of my pet mixes. Anyhoo, thanks for another interesting vid!

Hi Beverley - so nice to hear from you - I agree from what I've seen that these intense colors do go a long way. I painted a portrait with her palette and it was a hot mess but I definitely want to keep playing with these colors!

Perylene Crimson is one of my absolute favorite colors. Of all time. I use the Daniel Smith version because it is the literal color of blood. And therefore perfect for portraits. After all, it's the blood underneath our skin that gives us our flush color. And those reddish places, like in the crease of the nose, or when light is shining through thin places like our ears! I haven't tried the QoR version, but theirs looks more like every other brands Perylene Maroon. Which is still a favorite color of mine. Actually, all the perylenes are my favorites. So dark and moody, but can be thinned to bright beautiful washes. Also, FYI, those pigments are so extremely lightfast that they are used for car paint!

I definitely need to play with it more! It acts kind of like a burnt sienna on steroids, without the granulation.

Burnt sienna is just a spectacular paint. Even used solo it creates such cool paintings. And it also a great team player ❤ thank you for the amazing video and those squirrels in the background ❤❤❤

I love Baohong paper . Winsor Newton Burnt Sienna is my favorite . All brands are not the same. Winsor is redder.

Yes every paint brand puts their own twist on these colors. My favorite burnt sienna is WN. I like Baohong paper but it didn't 'fur out' well in my tests : )

Is French Ultramarine different from Ultramarine blue?

It's warmer and more granulating than Ultramarine Blue in general but different brands do different things.

The owner of Daniel Smith said that Fr Um blue is warmer, redder because the particles are larger.

Did you know that the burnt sienna you are using is PR101 and not the usual PBr7? I’ve never liked the usual burnt sienna but love love love PR101…

Thank you so much for "introducing" me to Ali. Her work looks wonderful! And thanks to you for taking the time to produce such information packed videos. Colors are always popular, as they are a more pleasing and "snazzier" subject than composition or values. One can often substitute Light or Venetian Red (PR101) for Burnt Sienna (PBr7) with mixes adding most any blue (except Cerulean, as you noted.) Likely I have mentioned this several time, but Hazel Soan's "Art of the Limited Palette" is outstanding, although it appears to have sold out. the is a long video here that discusses it in detail. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIHJkpWNmbKpoa8. If you think it would help your viewers, many enjoy having the pigment number mentioned when naming a color.
