I looooooove my Vera Bradley travel gear! Just about everything I own is Vera, from my luggage to travel accessories. I love the weekender but I will not take it again on a plane trip as my only carryon bag. Schlepping it through the airport it gets HEAVY! And awkward. A couple of years ago Vera Bradley came out with a compact weekender. It’s the same great bag in a smaller size, but still has more pockets than you’ll know what to do with. I got it in their “lighten up” fabric which is kind of like a ripstop nylon. It’s not too heavy even when packed full and I can even carry it cross body if needed. Unless I’m also taking a rolling bag for the airport I’ll save the big weekender for road trips.

@@MKristen702 I love the ripstop nylon fabric. I keep trying to get them to collaborate with me so I can test several for people.

Have you not ever had an issue with the size of the weekender for a personal item? I'm new to flying and wanted this bag but one of the measurements is like a half inch over what Southwest says they allow, so I didn't want to not be able to bring the bag because I'm planning on putting a change of clothes and essentials in there and putting my other clothes in my carryon.

My personal item bag is the Canter by Lug. It a bagpack that you can also wear crossbody style or carry by the two tote handles. It has a ton of organization a soft lined dedicated phone pocket, 2 magnetic closure pockets on the outside for water bottles, umbrella s etc.. A clear zip inside pocket that can be wiped clean of something spills inside and a pocket/ luggage strap on the back if you want to place it on your rolling suitcase. The bottom has a clear plastic protective covering if you accidently set your bag on something wet and the very best part is the padded backpack straps stow away in their own pocket if you dont want to carry it as a backpack. I traveled internationally with this bag last year and absolutely fell in love with it. I had a packing cube with a change of clotes, a 10 inch tablet, my liquids bag, phone , wallet, gallon sized bag of snacks, earbuds, magazine, my emergency kit(bandaids etc.. A monogrammed glass in a gift box for a gift and all my electronics, my pashmina and my travel pillow hanging off the side and my empty crossbody inside. I highly recommend the Canter by Lug.

I almost always use a backpack as a personal item to keep my hands truly free for rolling my main bag and just generally being able to move easily with out a lot of fuss. Osprey is a fantastic brand for very high quality bags that give good support even when the bag is heavy and will last for years. Mine is similar to the Aphelia. I find that even in European cities, a black backpack blends in well for all but the most formal activities.

I Love Vera Bradley also. All my luggage is from her. Vera also has a under seat roller travel bag with the big handle. I travel with it and I love that it has many pockets. Also, if you are like me that has to carry a cpap machine or any other medical equipment you can in a separate bag and is always for free, giving you more space in your personal item bag. I place my cpap machine in a smaller tote on its own. Nothing else but the cpap machine and my medication. Otherwise it will be considered another personal item. Always check the airlines policy regarding medical equipment. I’ve never had an issue. Great video! Happy travels!!!

I often travel with a small roller bag that fits in the overhead bin which is allowed for no charge on my favorite airline. It is a bit heavier than my same size travel back,pack bag of the same size and the rolling feature takes up more room inside the bag, so when I need more room, I take the backpack, which is nice because I can travel hands free and is great for international travel when I might need to walk over uneven streets and cobbles, climb up and down metro stairs and move from a bunch of transportation types.

Don’t make the mistake I did the last time I flew! I took a nice lightweight tote with NO interior pockets (and NO slip pocket for the carryon suitcase handle)! It constantly slipped off my carryon. Never again! ... Another mistake I made was using a 21” wheeled duffle as my carryon. The narrow wheel base made it flip flop from side to side as I walked down the concourse. I wound up leaving it with the people I visited and ordering a 19” carryon from Amazon that arrived a day ahead of my flight home.

My suitcase that I use when going carry-on only is the carry-on size from a Sonoma Life+Style 5-piece set (the older version of the Sonoma Goods For Life 5-Piece Meridian set), and I use either an old North Face Vault backpack (old enough that it doesn't have water bottle pockets) or my Osprey Tempest 20, depending on the trip. I often have to take another bag for medical stuff (I usually have too much to be able fit it all into the other 2 bags), and that's usually the overnight bag from same set as the suitcase. For trips when I'm either checking a bag or driving, the suitcase I use is the mid-size Hauptstadtkoffer tapestry suitcase that my mom got at either a thrift store or garage sale several years ago (looks like they don't make the one I have anymore, but it's only a couple inches too tall and deep to be a carry-on). So airlines get charged thousands of dollars if people have extra bags - I'm curious if that happens even when people's extra bags hold medical equipment, since the airline cannot charge the passenger for those bags, at least in the U.S.
@TravelTipsbyLaurie4 жыл бұрын

Love the travel videos. With all the new bag size limits, I would love to see one on how to condense hair care and make-up items so they take less space. I got a small Baggalini Convertible backpack and the Lilly and Drew tote bag to take on the plane and will check my roller case. I have found it is easier to travel light than fuss with heavy bags. My plan is just to have what I need for the plane, a change of clothes and fresh undies. I think I can make it work with the two small bags.I figure the small backpack will be my handbag and the Lilly and Drew bag will be my carry-on. I also throw into my bag a plastic grocery bag to use for garbage until the flight attendants come round to collect it.

I have some unique travel needs. I have sleep apnea, and I travel for work a lot, so I travel with a CPAP. Some of the best money I ever spent was a small travel sized CPAP unit so I don't have to hassle with the big home unit. I put it in my backpack that goes on the plane with me. I'm also an amateur photographer (The traveling job has been great for my hobby!) , I use a fishing sling bag with a padded insert for my mirrorless camera. when flying, the slingbag packs flat and goes in my checked luggage, while the padded insert goes in the backpack. I also travel with tools and other equipment, so I always have to check a bag. Makes my 22" suitcase cramped when flying even for 2 or 3 days. But my 25" suitcase is often more than I want to lug around. If you know of any cases that are midway between a carry-on size and a 25 incher, I'd love to get pointed that way.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I have that one and a very light Travelon tote with the sleeve. Both that & the Longchamps purse are “2 paper Towel rolls” in size. (Love that measure you invented btw) The Travelon zips up to package the size of my hand and the Longchamps folds up flat so both can be paced as extra for the return trip if I need to- or as day bags for shore excursions. Of the two I prefer the Travelon as it’s lighter but style wise, the Longchamps bag. The Longchamps bag has 2 flaws. It’s a black hole interior, and no sleeve so I can’t slip it onto my suitcase handle (second carry on item I use)

I am not traveling till next March (hopefully). Tips that work for me are if I am going on a cruise I pack a bottle of hand soap in my checked luggage. (In a plastic bag). I was doing this before COVID. I also like packing my necklaces in those little bags that come with your clothes with extra buttons. I am a big Samantha Brown fan so I always use her luggage. Thanks for your helpful videos.

Great tip! And we love Samantha Brown; used to watch her like 13 years ago! I cannot remember the name of her first series.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I love how thick the straps on it, are. I can wear it fully loaded for a long time and it doesn't fatigue me! (And this from a 5 ft 2, under 95 lb, 53 yr old! Lol). I also love the silhouette of the Little America, style. Looks so polished and sophisticated. :)

I have a Sherpani Sojourn, which is a backpack and tote and crossbody and can slip over the handle of my suitcase as well, so solves all problems. The one I have is a charcoal color and looks very nice. It's 12"x15"x5", so holds all my must haves and a change of clothes, in case my carryon gets gate checked.

This was just the video I was looking for. I don't travel much and didn't even realize I could bring a personal item with my carry-on. I already bought tickets and paid for a check bag lol but I don't want to do that as I'll have enough room if I add a personal bag

Well that is wonderful news. This is an old video so you may want to watch this video: linktw.in/1wMVQa or one called How I Organize my Personal Item Bag

My latest favorite personal item; Domestic size: Lug Propeller 2 Duffel. Tons of organizational compartments and semi structured so it doesn't completely flop over but still squishable. East West which is my favorite, so I can see everything. Intl size: Lug Aviator Overnight Bag. North South design. Same of the organizational compartments and materials. Crossbody: Baggallini Calais Crossbody purse Baggallini Central Park Sling Lug designs specifically for travelers hence the multiple compartments And Baggallini also designs for travelers, so most of their bags are theft proof and rfid protected.

Hi, Laurie! Wanted to let your viewers know if they look on Amazon at the light interior bag, there are two styles. I ordered this when you mentioned it on your Prime Day video. I wanted the one with the one large and two smaller outside pockets. It's more of a box shape. I accidentally ordered the wrong bag. No biggie. Sent back, reordered, got the one I wanted. Mine is the solid blue bag. Thanks for featuring this bag. Cannot wait to use it!!

Another great video! Yes to VB & pouches & compression bags that are a step above packing cubes. Definitely say no to the exposed wheels. I lost one in Orlando at a professional meeting in 2013 & Delta replaced my damaged luggage. That's the year I went with TravelPro. So I'm now down to my TravelPro under seater with compression bags & a Samsonite backpack for international & my VB for domestic. One new tip for us is to cover our bags in plastic if on a hydrofoil or ferry. Our luggage was exposed on the way to Ischia & the water repellent fabric was helpful, but a disposable plastic bag would have cinched it. My only travel has been home to GA to help a friend prepare for retirement sale of her home. On the way in I saw movie studios off Covington/Oxford~ wow! And I think you are my spirit animal Laurie~ My hubby noticed we even wear the same "go to" nail polish color. Thank you for all the insight & wisdom. When we are allowed to travel Israel is next. It sounds like Santa will be extra good to you this year

Israel?! My mom LOVED it but could not wait to eat cooked veggies lol. Did you hear me say, "My friend Wanda loves VB bags" in the video? That is awesome that Delta replaced it!! Thank you for watching.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I did! Thank you for the shout out~ We actually saw the baggage handler rip the wheel off, so they worked with me. Glad your mom enjoyed Israel. Its at the top of Vinnie's list, not mine. Galapagos is top of my list. Looking forward to your next video!

My favorite is Mia Tui Jenny. Bright aqua waterproof interior with lots of pockets and organizational stuff and easy to see. Even a space for a water bottle. Comes with a small cross body bag that matches, and a clear TSA bag (which I think is too small as it’s not square at the bottom- but is included. LOL)

Love your videos, giving them a thumbs up not only because they are good, but it helps me keep track of which one's I've watched :D I need a personal bag with wheels as I'm a senior and cannot carry heavy items. I have the Amazon basic one but have found that it doesn't always fit under the seat, especically if I'm sitting in the isle seat, which I need to straighten my legs or my knees lock. I usually take out what I think I'll need and then put it in the over head comparment, but my next trip I'm brining my fanny pack, great tip!! Thank you :D

I gave up wheeled luggage and can fit quite a bit more in my Osprey carry-on sized backpack. It does get pretty heavy, but it has a quality hip belt so the weight sits comfortably just below my waist. I've never lost my balance (I'm nearly 70 so that's important). My "personal item" has wheels instead. Because it's significantly smaller, I lose fewer square inches overall. I think it was Rick Steves who revealed to me how much interior luggage space was taken up by wheels and handles.
@TravelTipsbyLaurie4 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you watch my how to choose luggage, I show you that too. It's amazing!! I'm so glad you have the packing tips to pack in a backpack. Way to go! I hope you get to go go go. Thanks for watching.

Hi, just want to drop a tip about picking bright or unusual colors for your carryon, and your jacket, in the airport. If my husband is waiting for me near the gate and/or we get separated somehow, he can see me much more easily than if i have all black on.

Nice video 👍(as always ♥️)! Hubby and I both have a backpack from Walmart for our personal item for budget airlines... Works very well for us: might be an Eastpack? Was about $20 each. We purchased them about a year or so ago... We've taken them on 3 (air) trips I think, maybe 4. Florida, Ohio, Nevada, and another city in Texas? And countless road adventures. Our budget carry-on is by Rockland? Love em! Especially for ticket purchases that include a carry-on bag! Your videos have really helped ME reduce the amount of cargo I bring ... My husband thanks you! Lol Happy travels! Lord willing, we'll head up north for Christmas!

Just a VB comment ... I travel carry on + personal w/trolley sleeve (VB compact weekender is my favorite, altho I wish I could find something slightly shorter!) only (after “they” lost my checked luggage on one trip & it took them 3 days to get it back to me, luckily that trip was nonstandard for me & I was staying with my aunt for a week before my regular 1-2 nights in each location, or it would have never caught up with me!) ... after about 2-3 weeks, the trolley sleeve got loose (stretched out) and the tote would slip and fall/roll under the rollerboard, so I now make sure I also bring a 32” gear tie so I can wrap the tote handles to the luggage handle if I need to (ps, the gear tie can also be used with personal totes that don’t have that handy trolley sleeve).
