I just have to add to your video, and tell you how much I enjoy your channel. I too, own several (10) pipes from Jason, and every one is a work of art. You may have heard Jason mention me from time to time. I hope you will continue with the book, "The art of smoking a pipe ". It started off so well, the way you make your videos look like a old 8mm film is Just grate. I'd love to hear back from you sometimes. Thanks, Ron

Hi Ron, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Jason is a terrific craftsman and I'm proud to own some of his work. And I have good news too, if you want to hear the rest of the book, I read it all and it's already posted on www.briarreport.org on the Artful Codger Show (just click on thr BRTV link when you get there)! Hope you enjoy, and thank you again for the kind compliments!

Those old pipes stamped Imported Briar more than likely are from a larger company that was rejected because of a tiny flaw that does not affect how it smokes, and most function very well, as you say, just as good as a Jacopo or Castello. I like to see an underestimated pipe appreciated, because there are many that get looked over.

Mr. Pipe Club... you sure ain't wrong. Many of my very best pipes don't carry any great name, but they certainly smoke like they did!

Nice pipe my friend. My small collection seems to be getting bigger by the month. Lol... It certainly is a obsession that can very quickly get out of control. There is a certain pipe out there for every pipe smoker that is the one for them. Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely. A small handful of pipes you really love are worth more than ANY attractive piece of desk furniture that may catch your eye. I actually resent having to break in a new pipe at this point. But it's always worth it in the end!

What's a morta pipe like compared to briar ?
@theartfulcodger5 жыл бұрын
@@mmatzick Truth be told, although it's still largely like wood... it smokes much more like meerschaum than it does briar. It gets warm quickly, dissipates heat quickly, smokea dry and cool and provides an extremely clean taste. It doesn't build cake and it doesn't need breaking in. It also can be smoked all day with no ill effects, so I'm sure enjoying it! And the end of the day though, it's just a pipe and the differences aren't earth-shattering. This is an extremely well-made morta pipe though and it is performing just beautifully.

He sure does! And I couldn't help but have faith that he could really build a great smoking pipe. So many times he went the length to show his drilling, button, funnel and tenon work, and made all the reassuring observations that function would come first, and form second (though he's no slouch in the form department either)! All the best sir!

I always enjoy your videos. I must admit to a little bit of pipe envy. That’s quite a collection. And a beautiful new addition to it. Thanks for sharing.
@theartfulcodger5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jeff! But be careful with that... pipe envy is a big part of how you actually end up with a pile like that! Even if I never smoked a pipe more than once a week, I wouldn't get back to any one in less than 4 weeks. That's excessive. A pipe needs a lot of love and lot of smokes to be its best for you, and having so many only accomplishes two things: pipes that get neglected, and an excuse to buy pipe racks! It took 20 years and probably twice this many pipes (and don't even ask me about tobaccos...) for me to find out that a no-name mismatched old briar full of Velvet was what it took to make me happy. It doesn't take a pile like this to get the very most from pipe smoking... just better perspective than I can say I had for the first 10-15 years! Enjoy your favorites. I guarantee they smoke every bit as good as mine.

Thank you John, good morning! He sure is an artist... but more than that... he's a craftsman and a pipe smoker. He knows exactly how to make an "artful" and very keen smoking tool! Enjoy yours sir!

The pipe looks like a devil Anse ish shape....good vid
@theartfulcodger5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The Anse is actually similar to a dublin shape, but it cants forward away from the smoker. A neat looking pipe for sure, but distinct and different from this little guy!

Whaaat?? a new pipe....is that allowed in codgerville?? Seriously that is a beautiful pipe, the balance of the design is what strikes me most. I hope it gives you many years of great puffing. Would be nice to hear your thoughts on Morta compared to other pipe materials, I've not tried Morta myself so am curious. All the best Ben
@theartfulcodger5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Simon! It won't be new for long, I promise you that! I'm really looking forward to the Morta. I understand that with up to 12% hard mineral content, it behaves more like meerschaum than briar and is perfect for repeated smoking all day long! Sounds like some pretty codger friendly material to me! Off to the Velvet can!

All Right Ben, That Apple-Lovat is just what I like to see, my favorite shapes,are Lovats,Liverpools, canadian,Lumbermans and finally straight billiards,some may call my tastes are a bit out of date and narrow-minded,Ok I do agree,be it so, lately I've been into older estate refurbished Britwoods ,brands like GBD,BBB,Comoy's,because Want I it or not,after trying all them current factory made medium priced pipes I have come to a conclusion, many a time older Estates offer way better quality in craftsmanship and shapes in comparison to today incarnations,despite the fact that those higher ends estates of yesterday are not necessarily what we call affordable items no more,quite opposite if You ask me, Thanks for sharing, Keep up the good work there in Condgerland,and Best Greets from the one who primarily smokes BlueCollar folks blends'Paul
@theartfulcodger5 жыл бұрын
Paul... you and I are cut from the same cloth my friend. Classic western shapes are my bread and butter and estates make up 95% ofml my collection (or more). Jason helped me replicate a favorite I would never find again, but if I could find another estate pairing like this I'd take it in a second! All the best buddy!

Just got a Petersons Aran Lovat. Unfortunately for some strange reason the bowl gets so hot that you can't hold it. I mean blazing hot. Waiting for a return label so that PnC can examine it. I was told by one,that the briar wasn't cured properly. Don't know but would like to know what went tong,because like you,I have many pipes,but none that get this hot. Hoping to resolve and getting a Lovat that I can enjoy. Happy smokes Sir.🤐
@theartfulcodger5 жыл бұрын
That's a real pity Steven. I know personally I'm not thrilled with the way Petersons have been made for 30+ years. It's a real shame for such a storied brand to have such poor quality control issues, but makes sense when you read into their most recent recent management prior to Laudisi acquiring the brand. Poor curing can definitely cause a pipe to smoke too hot (excessive moisture still imbedded in the wood). A GREAT lovat that can be had for a fraction of the price is a Blakemar Briars Deluxe. One of my VERY favorites and even new and unsmoked, it took off beautifully right away.

Had an issue with a Peterson B42 regarding their system drain hole. Outcome was unexpected. Received Deluxe Silver banded directly from Dublin sent by the owner Connor. Moral of the story, don't mess with a retired senior. We have time and resources and we're relentless.😆👍🤐

70% of the craftsmanship in making a pipe it’s the mouthpiece. And that is the exact part you are not using. Chinese rubber bits.
