The Kiko meerschaum pipes on eBay have been super expensive as of late. A alternative to an on-the-go pipe is also a Brylon pipe such as a vintage Yello-Bole or a Medico, choosing one with thicker walls elevates the issue of it getting too hot. They are great for a knock around pipe and smoke nice similar to a meerschaum. I use a vintage Air Control Yello-Bole and love it!
@theartfulcodger6 жыл бұрын
I really enjoy my brylon medico as well! I've seen those kikos you're talking about... but you need to get down in the dirt a little. Those are all (or mostly) new and refurbed pipes being sold by pipe dealers. You need to search stuff like "leather pipe" "used pipe" "old smoking pipe" and filter for most recent postings with buy it now options for under say $30. I don't buy anything from pipe dealers online, I scour for junk sellers who don't even post a brand name. You gotta know more than they do to get a great deal. Just be sure to get additional pictures and info if you need to! Found one for a friend just about 2 weeks ago... $12, smoked maybe twice. Leather and stitching and liner were perfect... but the stem was badly oxidized. Guy was selling it as "vintage pipe with leather"... no name, 2 pictures, no mention of meerschaum... and the fella had about 300 mcdonalds toys and racing posters listed. He didn't know, and didn't really care. He had it as a $15 buy it now OBO and he took $12 (with free shipping too)! I stay out of the pipe circles. You just find price gouging and attitude. Those are the jerks that snipe all the pipe lots, do a cursory restoration and sell custombilts for $80, Dr. Grabows for $40, etc. I kid you not, taking the time to dig through the unspecific listings on the low end of the price spectrum is the ONLY way to get the very best deals... even a $29 Dunhill shell briar billiard from the early 60s... or a $12 kiko. I know this was a long reply, sorry. But I really resent the way some estate pipes are sold and find a good bit of pleasure in outmanuevering them with my nose to the ground. Give it a shot, be patient, and you'll find some real treasures!

I just found your channel, and I love your discussion of Kikos. It reminded me that I thought I saw a leather-clad pipe in a box of my father's pipes. (I'm 68 and have been smoking pipes since the 1960s.) I looked in the box and found a Kiko 78A in great shape. I cleaned out the bowl, shank, and stem and immediately enjoyed some Kramer's Father Dempsey. Delicious! The shape is a prince, with a long, gently curved stem. I'm loving it. Thanks for making this possible! I'll be watching you from now on.

@theartfulcodger6 жыл бұрын
Sheldon Richman Yes! Fine sanding paper (800 grit or higher) or Mr. Clean magic eraser! I have also gotten blackened tops cleaned off nicely with a course cloth (like a dish/kitchen rag) over a soft piece of leather or sponge with vigorous pressure and circular motion scrubbing. I would start with the magic eraser though!

Your leather wrapped pipes were interesting (my ears perked up at the word inexpensive), the information was good (as always), but, what really got my attention was the floor lamp in the background!! A beautiful specimen! Do you know how old it is? I've got a single lamp floor lamp that has a turned wood pole that I estimate to be ninety years old. It was an attic rescue from Grandma after she passed away many years ago. They gilded the wood to make it appear to be made of metal (like gold leaf, but it's not real gold!).

A basic every day carry that fulfills it purpose - excellent, Ben! Good points on the leather covered meerschaum pipes. Like your tobacco pouch (mine is a lined leather roll-up) they also reflect something of your character. I'm happy to see some oxidation on those stems. It's a good sign that they are well-loved by being well used - definitely honest, working pipes. You could safely guess that I'm not a big one for keeping pipes in 'like new' condition, at least not the ones in regular use. Be well my 1940s friend - love the music - and peace

Always great to listen to you Ben (if I worked for Disney, I'd hire you on the spot to do voices). I've been looking for one of these pipes for a while on Ebay. Is there a company who still produces them or something similar (meer lined and leather wrapped)?
@theartfulcodger6 жыл бұрын
Bonapiper Thank you very much! If you look up Kiko pipe on Ebay right now, a guy is selling a whole bunch of new old stock. Granted, for around $80 each (way more than I paid for used ones). But there are a number of other companies that made them as well. Not sure if anyone is currently making meer lined pipes that have a leather wrap, but I know Savinelli, Longchamp, Neptune, Derby, Medico, Bradbury, Jeantet, and others all made them.

Thanks, sir. Just picked up a Marshall Field Meerlined and a Derby Pigskin. Got those plus a Meerschaum - all restored estates for less than $100.

Paul The Scandinavian I have a 2 four-pipe bags, but almost never use them anymore. The meer-lined pipe and pouch of tobacco serve my needs just fine, and I don't end up needing to carry a little pipe purse around!

The Artful Codger so, with so much experience with Velvet, what packing method do you prefer with it? It seems like a pretty unique cut.

Sapient Smoke I usually gravity fill, tamp and then scoop and tamp until full. Nothing special!

Joe Goss 'Fraid not Joe. I dumped Facebook back in college (that was right around the time FB came out!) and never looked back. Haven't had any interest in instagram either. I might someday, but I don't see the appeal.

I the Dill's too for the same reasons. I always wanted to try the Dill's Best tobacco. It hasn't been made since the fifties I don't think.
@theartfulcodger6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Gabbard You know, vintage sealed tins of Dill's Best go floating around on ebay and places like www.pipestud.com on occasion. I would like to try it as well! Either way, the pipe cleaners are still the same! I got a distributer case of them from the 60s and they were IDENTICAL to the current production, only difference was that the sleeves back then did not have a closing flap on top.
@matthewgabbard64156 жыл бұрын
The Artful Codger If I ever manage to get a tin of it I will share it with you don't worry haha
@theartfulcodger6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Gabbard Same goes here! It's not at the top of my vintage blend list to try, but it's on there! Have you had a chance to try any of the discontinued OTCs like Briggs, Field & Stream, Bond Street, Model, Sugar Barrel, V.I.P., and the like? I'd say any of them are worth snatching up if you find them! Top of my list to try yet are Cookie Jar and Bowl of Roses.
@matthewgabbard64156 жыл бұрын
No I sure haven't, I see that pipestud has a few of the old ones on his site. There looks like there's a nice old tin of Mix 79, you might like. I've also been watching that Briggs Mixture that's aged in the wood barrel and comes in one too. Have you ever had Briggs? I haven't tried it
@theartfulcodger6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Gabbard I like Briggs very much! And I was looking at that barrel too. Unfortunately, I don't know how good it would be if rehydrated at that age. Looking for a 14oz sealed tin myself!
