Dude thanks a lot for these videos, I can't believe you don't have 80 bazillion views, these are GOLD

Hahah, thank you so much! Yeah, I think the KZbin algorithm hasn't blessed me with good fortune, but as long as the videos are helpful, that's what counts!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on all of these brush packs! I actually have the majority of Max's packs already; I love the feel of his brushes right off the bat and they're definitely worth the money spent imo. Have you, by chance, ever used brushes from LaneDraws? I have his Charcoal and Pastel packs; they're both quite good.

Yep, love Lane's stuff! Been a fan of his for quite some time, and we were in ImagineFX together way back when!

I really want to like the Perfect Oils for Procreate brushes, they're the perfect blend between brushes that are clearly digital and make use of all the little settings you can tweak with the fun painterly style of real oil paint. As if oil painting WAS digital, if you can follow, while the max oil paint brushes straight up go for realistic oils. Sadly I've run into an issue with the Perfect Oil brushes, perhaps you can help me out or at least tell me if you had the same problem: Most of the brushes have a "glitch" with some odd particles and some even have a very strong white border though I can't tell if that's intentional. Have you experienced something similar?
@ArtOfWesGardner2 ай бұрын
From what I've found, it's actually a feature. Part of the "impasto" look deals with having certain blending modes on the brush itself, so using certain brushes on top of other brushes can result in that white "halo" look, which just means either the values aren't quite together where they need to be between the two colors (the one you just painted, and the one that was already there that you're painting on top of). A nice way to temper some of those brushes with the artifacts is to make a merged version of your current painting, create a new layer with the merged copy, then on that new layer, create your new brushstrokes. Then, you can lower the opacity of the top layer if the brush artifacts/white halo effect is too intense. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for the detailed and quick response! At least now I know my Procreate or the brushes aren't what's wrong and that it kind of is a skill issue on my part. Definitely will practice and work on my values now! I will also give your "workaround" a try if I should have that issue again. Do I make an entirely new layer without anything on it, or should I duplicate the merged image and paint on that copy (before reducing the opacity)? I'll just follow the advice you gave in the video (which I enjoyed very much even though I am familiar with all of the brush packs you mentiones). Trust the process and keep working on it even if it might look a bit off or wonky at the start. :) The PDF for the perfect oils mentions working on a larger resolution and resizing/scaling down the final image. Have you tried that yet? I haven't, but I'm working on a short graphic novel for my university art class and have considered painting on a larger canvas before sizing it down to the size it's going to be printed at. Never really worked on anything that's going to be printed yet so I have no clue if that's a good idea or if I should paint at the size it's going to be printed at. My apologies for bothering you with all those questions! I'm sure we all appreciate an experienced and professional artist to take their time and share their knowledge with us :)

I never knew procreate had a gradient map feature. Wow I’m so late, thanks for sharing!

Ha, I just figured it out not too long ago! Now I need to dedicate a day to make like 100 custom gradient maps lol

hey wes! thanks for sharing these brushes with us. i bought the maxpaxk oils, but i cant seem to find any tutorials for it on youtube. do you think you could use it one day for a stream, or do you already have a video and ive missed it? thank you!! 🙏🏻

Oh that's a good idea! Sort of show exactly how I use them (or think about them). I love the pack, but there's so many brushes that it can definitely feel overwhelming at times!

Would you say the Maxpact is as good as Rebelle 7 Pro?
@ArtOfWesGardnerАй бұрын
For the oil/acrylic style brushes I think they're pretty close, but for watercolor effects I think Rebelle wins in a landslide (simply because Rebelle's engine is made from the ground-up to simulate fluid physics realistically, while Max's brushes are limited to what Procreate's render engine).

try greg rutkowskys brushes - amazing trad medium simulating brushes. also u dont have to buy brushes for procreate separately - it can import photoshop brushes :)
@ArtOfWesGardner3 ай бұрын
I've used Greg's brushes since 2019, they're fantastic! With the import stuff, while that's true, having a separate Procreate pack that is made within the program by the developer will always give better results than brushes imported from another software, because of native brush engine dependencies that each software has that's different than one another. Definitely worth the money to get the separate packs for each native program, at least in my experience!

I had the Perfect Oil for Procreate but I do not know how to tame the beast! The brushes produce too much artifacts that make the painting very unnatural. I would love to know how you use this brush pack, any particular settings that would reduce or eliminate the artifacts
@ArtOfWesGardner3 ай бұрын
I've also experienced some artifacting (especially the "highlights" on impasto brushes), but usually I'll either use a palette knife brush to "scrape" the edge away, or even use the Perfect Oil brushes on a layer on top of my painting, then adjust the opacity or blending mode to get the effect to be a bit more subtle. Hope this helps!
