I used to reply to every one of my Amazon and Goodreads comments/reviews with a "Thank you for your kind response" no matter what they said. Even if the feedback was ridiculous, like "This book was for beginners and I wanted something more advanced!" when the first line in the book description is "A beginner's guide to..." Argh.

"Where'd I lose ya?" "I've never written in 2nd person POV in. My whole. Life." ?????!?!?!?!?!?!?!!? *sips tea* "Is that the only way you enjoy a story... if there's a surprise assault???" Most summers, I try to take part in my local library's summer reading challenge. Which includes: reading a book, talking about the book, and submitting that as an entry for a raffle. This year I hit tab too many times and skipped past the section where I talk about the book, and it gave me a big warning that said: Thoughts are required. I still have that screenshot and I don't post it nearly as often as I probably could. One day, perhaps, we'll have smart enough AI to notice when a review has something dumb in it and just pop up that warning for them.

When the film Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was released my wife and step-mother saw it. My wife's comment: "It had too much singing." I looked at her and said, "It was a musical!" My step-mother's comment: It was too bloody." It's called the DEMON Barber of Fleet Street! Some people do not read the tin.

I learn more from my positive reviews than my negative ones. When someone gives me negative reviews I figure it just wasn't their cup of tea. I mean if someone says you have lousy characterization and then ten other reviews say you have good characterization, I'm not sure the criticism is valid as a whole. Of course if lost of the reviews say the same critique over and over then you should take notice.
@furonguy42

The critique about the stories being "too weird" is so baffling. "Little Birds" has some of the most grounded, relatable fiction I've seen in a looong time. And the "I don't relate to this" person, like, you don't need to LGBT to understand the heartbreak in "Winnow", its there, its brutally honest; MAYBE if the person who wrote that was aromantic, I could understand them not relating to it, but... fuckin' heteronormatives man, what even is their tiny worldview?

Good stuff! I've also seen people criticise epic novels because they're very long...I mean, it did say when they bought the book that it was 700+ pages so what did they expect? Hey, you should swap readers. My 'favourite' review of a book of all time however is: 'I bought this book for my boyfriend. He's not read it read yet. It's still on the bookshelf. 3 stars.' I mean, how the hell do you go about unpacking that one? I also like the ones who rate the book on the speed of delivery as if the author has hand delivered the book. Crazy. It's funny but if you are a small indie author with few reviews and you get a couple of crazies, it can hurt your book's chances. Hopefully, people can see through the nonsense.

OMG. I laughed at some of that. A teacher I know once said that there are two kinds of people, doers and critics and it's better to be a doer. That said . . . there are so many critics out there and some of those are funny. I don't read a whole lot and I inherited my mother's library, so I have about 3,000 books at my disposal, even after selling half of them to Strand. But the Amazon review of little birds, darkest places. I'm going to buy and read that. The review got me curious. Also, props on nailing some of your critics. I don't know why more people don't do this. It reminds me Jimmy Kimmel's stars read their mean tweets. Why not have fun with this negativity. I'm surprised you could read some of those with a straight face.

So... the captions said someone was upset about the barrier gaze trope. I was super confused, I'd never heard of that one. I thought perhaps it was some sort of unrequited love tale? Or maybe there is some sort of barrier or obstacle that the characters could see each other through, but not overcome. I had mental imagery of the longing looks they would give each other, from across the barrier. I didn't remember a story like that in Little Birds, but it has been quite a while since I read it, so... 🤷‍♀️ Took me a minute to go, "OH 'bury your gays'". I know that one. 😅

This could just be me, but most of these don't seem too bad. From what I could tell, most of them were about the work itself, not you as a person, which is a refreshing change. They also seem to either be people who didn't do their home work/pay attention to the obvious, or were picking up on little nitpicks they personally didn't like. Contrary to old saying you can, in fact, account for taste. All it really takes is to judge a work based on it own terms, according to the norms and tropes of a given genre or form.

jenna moreci - had to think about that one. Ah yes, she's a youtuber I enjoy watching every now and then. Maybe you could color your hair so folks don't get you two mixed up. :P

Ok so the only thing I can /fathom/ for why disliking Jenna's youtube channel was part of feedback was that they had such a hate boner that they watch her videos just to complain about them and she talked about your book so they HAD to leave a bad review as part of their particular brand of obsession. That's the only reason I can think of.
