I’m about 8 months into reefing. Started with a Fluval 13.5 for 6 months and got a 60G about 2 months ago. Both are doing really good. Your videos have bee super helpful. Thank you.

For Goni fans, Goniopora will do fine long term if you put them in a nice LPS, medium light area and feed them at least twice a week. I feed Reef Roids and Goniopower soaked in Red Sea AB+. My goni was about dime sized 3 months ago and now it has grown 7 times that size. They also like some decent flow too. My Duncan does really well in the same area.

Goniopora. I started reefing when they were available but seemed to melt no matter what 6-9 months in. The color availability and now success with them in the hobby has them as my favorite.

I love Acros especially smooth skin and deep water Acros because they are so challenging and keep me on my toes! One of my favorite parts of the hobby is that it keeps me busy, you know, idle hands and such. And Acros keep me busier than any other coral.

I'm pretty much on the same camp loads of colours and varieties with Zoas and Acan and easy to keep! Well at least when you don't accidentally put an Echinata next to a Micromussa anyway, lesson learned 😅 I do have a weird love for some types of GSP and Xenia to simple but beautiful! 👍

Even though I'm coral grown up, I still live really bright, neon green Candy canes. You can see them from miles away.

My favorite coral is tied as well For color and form, Montipora, or going more specific, Montipora Setosa. Burn your eyes bright orange, and one of the easier SPSs I'd had For color and movement, Torch coral, anything with yellow in it. Honorable mentions to Elegance coral (my first, and [knock on wood] still with me] and Montipora Capricornis, imo one of the wild reef-defining corals.

While I’m a stickhead I’ll agree that some of the most amazing colors come from my encrusting rainbow montipora. My Orange Setosa only looks good to me under magnification..too solid texture from a distance. My RR Rainbow loom and bonsai Acros are tied for second. Purple tipped green torch in third.

I stand clear of sps for now until my tanks more established and see how everything else goes in my mixed reef tank. Love the gonis, torches, and acans a lot. Shrooms are nice as well but they spread like wildfire lol Some day I’ll head up to you to see if I could get some nice pieces from you. Gotta look into the whole spiel of how it can be done lol

Carl Linnaeus used Latin to describe species in 1750s because it is a dead language. prefixes, suffixes, root words describe the organism using two words called Binomial Nomenclature ("containing two words"). we write it as: "Genus species" to keep individual organisms separate from their so-called peers. In plants, it's the sexual gametes that dictate the species and often in animals. A cultivar or a variety (cv. and var. respectively) in horticulture means they are propagated by humans like ornamental species. In the hobby, we could start formally calling species belonging to Acropora as "Acropora sp." sp. meaning species. This will help us narrow down specific issues - do AEFW attack all species in the genus for example? Trade names in horticulture became problematic - you'll often hear grannies talking Latin terms because they don't want a fake plant. They want the original. When we call corals in the trade their pet names, or their "common name" we remove the importance of the individual care specifics of that species. Knowing which species are common deepwater Acropora vs. shallow water acros would be very beneficial, and all that information would be contained in its Binomial Nomenclature Latin Scientific name - really neat!
@thevinylreef75113 жыл бұрын
For instance - you used Palythoa and Zoanthus interchangeably - they are not. Palythoa has palytoxin - this is essentially why Carl Linnaeus used Binomial Nomenclature - to prevent misunderstanding of scientific classifications. Because it's Latin and a dead language it cannot mean anything but what it references scientifically.

The reason corals are constantly reclassified/renamed is because they are genetically sequencing them to find out who is more related to who. Just because one species may look the same or similar to another doesn’t mean much. An example that demonstrates this well is cactus and euphorbia. Both look similar due to something called convergent evolution. Look up Euphorbia horrida, looks like a cactus. Not remotely related at all but they live in environments that are similar to those cactus evolved in, so they end up looking cactus-like through environmental pressures. So tldr, classification is dependent on genes, not what it looks like.
