I got back into trumpet playing after 25 years of not playing, with a 1942 Buescher 400 225 True Tone. The only thing I knew at the time that is was the top of the line Buescher model and many of the great jazz players of the day listed it as one of their great horns. Good enough for them was good enough for me! Nearly 20 years on, I can understand why. So well made and designed. A delight to play and plays just as well as it did new, 81 years on. It has regular use and I will not part with it. I liked it so much that I bought a 1951 Buescher 400 225 True Tone cornet as well. It is just as nice but very small, so a bit tight to hold with the left hand. It has all the same design features of the trumpet including the unique valve block and beautiful hand made bracing. Defiantly both keepers, the likes of, which won't be ever made again.

My nefew just started and I gave him a 1952 Buescher cornet. His teacher told him no old instraments. New only for the class. Teacher wasnt prepared for the cornet nefew walked into the class with. It was in very good playing condition.

Bueschers are some of my favorite horns ever. I've had an Aristocrat and currently have a 1952 37B. It's categorically a student model, but it is essentially a 400 without the bells and whistles (just like Olds did with the Ambassador). The caps are internally threaded and have this really cool in-set design that makes the buttons nearly flush when pressed down. The valves are bottom sprung and have near perfect plating (something I've noticed on multiple Bueschers). The valve stems even have a score mark around them that tells you where the alignment should be. You line it up to the top of the cap and it will give you a perfect alignment every time.

Most likely that's due to the fact that Selmer Corp bought the brand name and after really 1950 IMO the quality changed. The early 400's like this one are absolute monster instruments!

I have two of these. One is a 9.5/10 perfect. My other is 8.0/10. Both play fantastic. Some people call it a poor man’s Martin committee. Either way they play amazing.

There's something special about the Buscher trumpets! I have an Aristocrat I got at a flea market for $60. It needs a once over by a technician (new felts/corks, stuck slides, mismatched top button) but it's a fine player for it's age! it really, really pops with a bright 7E-ish mouthpiece, and I really wish I had opportunity to play it with a group!

Here's a review from our customer George who just bought this beauty! "This is the seventh horn I have purchased from ACB, and as always, no disappointments. The Buescher is a sweetheart of a horn. It is unlike any of the other horns in my collection. It's Deco Desgin is amazing and includes a scalloped shaped valve block, welded directly to the lead and bell pipes, tightening the wrap significantly. The reverse lst, 2nd and 3rd valve slides are all on the right side of the valve block, leaving the lead pipe to go directly to the 3rd valve. This really gives the horn an easy blow. Great valve action and the bell garland has a wrap ( similar to my two Selmers ) that offers extra stability to the tone. Although this horn is 78 years old ( almost as old as my 84 years ) it is in amazing condition. You have to look long and hard to find any marks or wear on the great dark honey-like look that vintage horns get with age. The compression is like something you get in a new horn. The tone...aw, man, it is so warm and sweet for ballads, but you can push it for orchestra work, too. This is my first Buescher. If you have never owned or played one, you are really missing out. This horn is fun to play, period. I think there are 2 or 3 Bueschers in ACB stock right now, so if you want something different in a horn, buy one of these babies. George B, Nova Scotia, Canada"

I bought a Buescher LP with the same design as described here after watching this and other videos. I bought also the AT Flugel Horn style mouth piece. I'm pretty much a beginner but already in heaven. The build and Deco patterns are beautiful. I'm in love with this instrument and sound. Warm,, huge and easy to play. Spoilt.

My trumpet teacher (Robt. Hance) who studied under Frank Simon and Augie Schafer at Univ. Cincinnati Conservatory of Music was given the 0002 serial number of the Buescher cornet from the company to play. I had an opportunity to play it when in high school.

I just love your show and tell vids. I'm the same with old motorcycles! lovely horn btw, but I don't understand why they have cut the threads for the top caps internally. Can you tell us why? It seems like a change from the norm. just for the sake of it.I also love the quality of some old trumpets. I bought an Olds Super (from you) 10yrs ago and had it restored: the engineering and build quality are unbelievable, for instance there are no less than 16 separate parts making up the 3rd slide (yes sixteen). I can't imagine what that horn would cost to build today, just the labour costs would be astronomical. Keep the videos coming.

The 400 225 is a fantastic horn! I play it almost every day. The one i´ve got needed a valve job and was not playable at first. Now it´s as tight as a Yamaha. The sound is dark and the slotting is pretty "loose", witch makes playing in tune very easy. There is room for good intonation i every note! I have a lot of vintage horns, and my Buescher is number one before my Olds Mendez.

I owned one ... model 225 ... just like the one you played. Never understood why it was a 400 and had a different model number? Coolest Art Deco design ever = just a stunning design. What valve block can compare in the cool factor with that horn? Thx for featuring yours ... most people have never seen or heard one.
