I purchased a Hose link. It has made a huge difference in watering my garden. It doesn’t leak, the hose isn’t so heavy that I have to struggle with it, and it rewinds into its holder when I’m finished watering. The nozzle that comes with it is great and I don’t need any other attachments to water my plants. Absolutely love it. I am really interested in the magnetic water attachment.

We love our antique sprinkler that goes back and forth in a fan shape. It’s great! For our garden design. It’s also beautiful in the early morning sunlight, like liquid diamonds and quiet!

I started with quick connects a couple of years ago (before they were super cool). I grew up on a farm and hydraulic fittings have quick connects, so I was all in when I saw my first one in the farm store for a garden hose. As you're setting up any water hose, irrigation - skip the teflon tape. PIPE DOPE. It's this goo you spread on the threads and just screw it on. I saw the hubs use it for the first time on a diseal pump hose fitting. I was instantly sold. For extra assurance, spread it on the threads when you hook up anything threaded. Ie, spread it on any quick connect or valve you won't be routinely screwing/unscrewing. I'm super interested in the Geka items. Like you, I'm over buying stuff I continually have to replace. OVER IT. I'd rather pay more upfront too. Love the videos!!! Take care!

I did something this year to water the far back part of my yard, beyond electricity and city water. I got a galvanized horse trough and fill it with water from the under ground sprinkler and a hose and then just dip my watering cans or buckets into it so I can water my new plantings. If I ever get electricity back there I will make it into a cool water feature as well.

Here in coastal California it doesn’t rain for months at a time. And we’re on a well so we have to ration the water carefully. We have two electric timers connected to valves and even I can set the timer up easily. Hunter brand timer is especially good. For hand watering I use a cloth type collapsing hose attached to a heavy duty garden hose. That way there’s less to lug around and no kinking. Orbit makes a nozzle that swivels so it doesn’t kink. I hope this helps.

I love the new Melnor toggle-type valves. I also like their quick connects. I've never cared for metal quick connects, although, until now, I've never seen one with a stop feature on it. I'm very intrigued with the magnet thingamabobber! Thanks, Erin!

I agree! I just want things that will last longer than one season. Here in Florida that is hard. The sun damage on our outdoor things is extreme compared to the rest of the country. 💜 I was so sick of going through sprinkler I just bought one of those hard plastic round sprinklers no mechanisms. I also have hard water so sprinklers often get clogged. 💜

Just a quick word on the watering can… I bought one last year and am using it like crazy but for those who have bad backs, weak muscles or balance issues, filling this watering can up can be a hazard because it gets SO HEAVY! If you have to lift it overhead or reach way out to pour the water, just know it can take you with it.

My husband bought 3 huge food-grade plastic drums and rigged up a rain collection system in which they’re all connected and up on a tall platform (water pressure!). We use a connector that has 4 ports and has the same toggle as yours (game changer!) and we’ve attached scrap hose pieces so we can fill 4 watering cans at once. IT. IS. AMAZING. We rely heavily on collected rain water. I use it for house plants too since it’s supposed to be easier on them (lower in salts and hard minerals). This system isn’t all that pretty (though the charcoal drums aren’t horrible looking) but the user experience is high 🙌 Also, we love those blue cans from Gardeners. And I like the rose for watering seedlings. That fine dispersal is perfect! Now of it falls off midstream…that’s another story 🤦‍♀️

My mother always claimed that rain water was the best for rinsing your hair - she said it made it soft and shiny. She grew up in the foothills of the Rockies in Alberta (🇨🇦) so they used to bring in buckets of water to heat and wash with 😱🤣

@@sharonperry8978 I’d have to agree! It’s pretty much naturally “soft” I guess, without the minerals or salts. When I get rained on my hair always feels softer than it does washing with well water, that’s for sure ☺️

Just ordered a couple Plant surges…. We’ll put it thru the test. Going to put one on our irrigation system for the yard… I had that same drip timer set up..nothing but trouble for me and was bulky. I switched all my drip timers to Melnor’s… Several four ways, but mostly two way. So far…they’re working. I’ve had trouble with Orbit timers getting heat stroke… Don’t really notice till your plants are brown and crispy. I found that at Home Depot and Lowe’s… Not sure what stores you have up there.. Those are our go to’s down here. Really enjoyed the video…👩🏼‍🌾👩🏼‍🌾

At the risk of portraying myself as a cheap idiot, I have to say I love the expandable hoses. They are lightweight, easy to store, and I have a bunch of them in different colors. Even turned on and fully expanded they are so much easier to handle. My favorite nozzle is the Orbit from Lowe's. They have been reliable for three years now. I use plastic shutoffs and plastic quick connects because they don't rust or corrode, and they work smoothly for me. The only regular hoses that I use are the ones I use to extend the reach of my water supply. The back one goes from the outside tap, fitted with a Y with shutoffs on the tap along the back of the house, past my (cheap) 6 X 8 Harbor Freight greenhouse, then snuggled into the rock garden, through the vinca, to the back lawn. When I want to use the soaker hoses I have in my two back garden areas, I just move the end of the regular hose to whichever garden I want to water, and hook it up to the soaker hose in that garden. My soaker hoses are flat nylon cloth, and very flexible even when full of water. At the end of summer I let the soaker hose dry before storing it in my shed. One tap on the front of the house by the front door also has a regular hose going along the front of the house to the side entrance where there is another rock garden, and terminates at the steps to the little deck there where one of the expandable hoses is connected to it, Another tap by the garage has an expandable hose attached to it so I can water the front gardens and shrubs, wash the car, etc. Of course I disconnect all the expandable hoses and let them dry before storage. The regular ones just stay outside year round.

I so wanted to love my Dramm wand but it leaks terribly, and I've tried using a pressure regulator, pipe tape and 4 different hoses. Looks like I'm getting a Geka! The plant surge option is interesting, with all of the magnetic therapy theories, I can see how it would have similar effects on plants. Thanks for the info Erin!

My diffuser on my watering can cracked and broke. My husband (also much more patient than I) figured out that most things are a standard size, he used a lid from a peanut butter jar and drilled holes in it. Genius. Needless to say, it works very well for my patio pots. 🇨🇦

I got the exact same geka soft rain long wand this summer for just 30€ and im very happy with it. You can just turn it around and the angle gives you a bit more distance...

There was a time several years ago that was promoting magnetic on your pipes in your home. Don’t know where that went. I have ordered quick connects from geko but did not try the watering wand. I do use Melnor wands. Some are adjustable stream, and one with just a gentle shower like the dram but a lot less expensive. Melnor also makes a telescoping sprinkler

I too have issues with the Dramm watering tools. Good to know we have other and better options. Just this year, thanks to Laura at GardenAnswer I have discovered the quick connects - game changers !!! I also purchased a HoseLink retractable hose system and love it !!! thankfully, here in Georgia, we've had enough rain that I rarely have to drag out the hoses - mostly for containers & hanging baskets. I remember your videos from last year. I was in search of a good hose. I was at home right after having spinal surgery, then Covid hit, what timing that was for me. My favorite wand to date is the long Gilmore wand. I noticed it was the kind that rotates but it only had one setting. It was covered in dust at Home Depot and took it to the counter to see the price. They said it was a Penny on clearance!! Turns out I like that gentle rain setting and don’t have a need for the other fancy settings my other Dram wand like yours has. I like the thumb control and the quietness of the Gilmore. I only used the shower setting on the Dram and find it to be noisy. LOVE that my hose doesn’t get linked all the time too so I sold on Gilmore.

I'm with you, Erin! I can't stand drippy watering tools and stuff that doesn't last and ends up in the landfills! And every no kink hose I've ever bought... guess what? Kinks! You gotta watch this video (EVERY American should watch this video!) called "Why We Can't Have Nice Things" on a channel called Veritasium here on KZbin. It's about planned obsolescence and corporate greed... interesting, and maddening at the same time. I will be checking into the Geka items you mentioned... thank you for the introduction, I hadn't heard of them and they look like good quality. That Plant Surge sounds interesting... I wonder if it is like the "water softener" we have. It's called Scalesweeper and it uses electric wires that you wind in opposite directions at one point on your plumbing pipes... not sure how it works or if it even uses magnetic properties, but it does work. It doesn't really remove the calcium and lime, but makes the particles smaller and unable to stick to everything as easily. Has something to do with ions maybe? Sorry, I don't understand how it works, but it reminded me of your Plant Surge magnets! 🤔😆

My favorite water wand is the Geka. Coupled with the Geka quick connect makes my watering hassle free. And I’ve been through wants and nozzles so I feel really good about throwing my preference into the pot. My Dramm was nice at first but leaked in less than one season. I also only used the one setting.

Loved this video.....I hate getting wet, when it’s the garden not me, that’s getting the watering. We have a well that was doing the same pressure issues a few years ago... we haven’t had that issue since we drained the bladder....🇨🇦

I just invested in three Dramm heads - so far, so good. I also end up using shower/rain the most. I use the angle setting for power. Less a fan of the short wand with the simple shower head - more water than I want too often.

I am trying out a new auto rewind hose reel this year in the garden. I reviewed the big box store brand reel that I installed on my channel and have been loving it! I am planning to instal a drip system in the vegetable garden next year and agree that finding a good irrigation timer with useful functions that we need is difficult! This is our first year with the tripod sprinkler. So far so good. It replaced an old sprinkler that got stuck just the way you described. I, too, have been in search of connections that don’t leak. This year I had to replace my 20 something year old standard hose nozzle and was sad until I found it's replacement for 10 bucks at Lowes. I'll stick with the old school hose nozzle. I can regulate what it does without issues.

When it comes to watering stuff, I tend to try new brands and then, go back to Melnor. I find their stuff to be the best bang for your buck. I love their quick connects (I actually prefer the ones without auto shutoff), their wands/nozzles and I will likely try one of their sprinklers next year. I did pickup some heavy duty Gilmour hoses on clearance a couple of years ago and they have been great. I plan to get a third one on clearance this year.

I have the quick connects that you used from last year. No issues yet but yes, you can't disconnect unless water is shut off and DRAINED FROM HOSE! I use the Gilmour sprayer with thumb nozzle. Love it! :)

I agree on the gardeners supply blue watering can. I think it is a cult favorite on the site. Heavy duty, built to last, and yet it is still light. The rose comes off super easy - get several.

With the tripod sprinkler it's probably a pressure issue, we have gravity fed irrigation and those often don't work very well because there is enough pressure for it to ratchet all the way one direction but not enough to push the little flipper thing back so it will ratchet the other direction (if that makes any sense). Also, it's very likely you could unscrew the sprinkler you like and screw it onto the tripod base.

Yes, to older sprinklers. I bought three different ones at garages sales years ago and they are my prize possessions. They are all metal and very simple to use. They don't have a bunch of settings and dials to mess up and break and leak. They just spray a round or squarish pattern. This is the first year I've used wands and they are a big improvement over the older spray type things. Thanks for all the information in this video.

Margie waterman- of all the sprinklers I have tried I have found that the old fashioned brass attachment has worked best and the water flow is controlled by turning the attachment to the flow that you need. Others have always broke before the season for me no matter how much we spent on them. My mom always used them.

Hi, Erin. I, too, am obsessed with watering tools (and vacuum cleaners, ah another story). Anyway, I haven't had the problems with my Dramm watering wands that you have been having. One is about 5 years old, and i got another one last year for a second hose. I have the 1000 hole (red) rain head on mine. I also have the one you have, based on your video last year. I don't like the rain setting as much, but I have used the other settings, though not much. I have been purchasing Eley quick connects. I LOVE them. They aren't cheap, they are heavy, but they are great. As far as the timer goes, I got the Melnor HydroLogic 73280 4 zone last year for my drip. It's on its second year, so far no problem. I actually got another one end of last season as i plan to install more drip. You can't run it on an app, it's all manual, but it has been reliable, so far. I've tried to get my hands on Geka, but no luck so far. Pretty happy with my choices.

Watering is the biggest issue for me in my gardens because of our deep, low yielding well. I did install drip irrigation in many of my beds to water more efficiently and more deeply and will be working on installing more. I SO wish we could have a huge cistern to store the abundance of rain we get in the winter and spring, but for now we are utilizing several 275 gallon tanks of pond and rain water to spot water with my gardeners supply watering can! 😄

I think I must have been watching your video late at night...lol... late night shopping. Anyways, we had really gross stinky sodium well water. Could not even think of drinking it . Went ahead and bought the Plant Surge, (I am from Canada) WELLLLLL we began using the plant surge. I attached mine directly to my outsource from my well. I love my hoselink retractable hose it’s really easy to use, also with the drip system, I have the b-hyve system that has 7 zones, some are sprinklers and some zones I converted to drip but control them all together with the one system. I haven’t had it long but it seems to be working well.

I use Gilmour’s Professional Utility Nozzle which has three settings: shower, fan, jet. No leaking or plastic. I’ve learned I need to store any watering gear in the shed in the off-season to prolong its working life.I have the small Waterright hose and love it’s lightness (and olive color) but I find it’s too narrow and still a PITA to coil up. I actually really like the expandable hoses (buy mine at Walgreens, lol) as a way to add-on length to a hose when needed and to water near the house.

Thank you for reminding us about Geka is now available in the US. But I must say I have used the Dramm that is available at every small independent garden center that is just rain and have never once had a problem with it and we have had it for 7 or 8 years. Highly recommend just going all in with your drip irrigation system and zone it via a system like Rain Bird ESP-Me. The rain sensor is a dream, but do keep in mind that it is designed to be scalable, so it may be a bit too much for simpler setups.

I bought a Geka water wand based on your recommendation. There is a plastic/nylon piece inside the thumb control part which broke off with 5 months of use!! We do not get snow and I have been very careful with the wand since it is so costly. What an expensive piece of junk.

Thank you for doing these videos. I am a TOTAL gadget-girl and I have bought several of your suggestions. I did buy the Dramm shut-off valve that you recommended last year and it has been great. I hate wasting water so if I need to stop and doing something while watering I can just switch it off where I am rather than going back to the source. I have a sprinkler system so watering is not my main pain-point. Deer are a big deal and I bought the backpack sprayer you suggested which was a game changer. It takes a fraction of the time and I have significantly less loss. I also bought the Sneeboer trowel that you suggested. That product is incredible. The edges are so sharp and it can really move a lot of dirt. The true test of its quality was when I was weeding and it started to rain. I quickly gathered what tools I saw into the garage. I had been discarding the weeds into a Tubtrug and didn't realize trowel had fallen into it. It rained for a week and when I finally got to dump the Tubtrug I found the trowel. It had been sitting in wet muck for a week. If it had been a typical tool it would have been totally rusted. But no rust at all and the edges were still sharp! Incredible quality! Thank you for all your suggestions! Maybe you can do a video on your favorite ways of getting rid of pests. I have a ton of dahlias so get thrips, earwigs, Japanese beetles, slugs and caterpillars.

I love gadgets too! As for the bugs, I'll work on it, but right now I just use the Bonide Slug Magic (or Bug and Slug) and handpick the Japanese beetles.

I just bought and set up an EDEN timer. Four outlets run from one timer; controlled by an app. Fairly intuitive to set up. Looks like it would run your veg garden setup perfectly with one timer instead of four.

I live in dry So. Calif. so watering is a big deal. We are usually on water restrictions so always trying to find the most efficient way to keep my plants alive. Have same quick connects, blue watering can, but also having problems with my Dramm water wand. Water running down my arm getting clothes and shoes wet, want to try the one you suggested. Guess it makes me feel somewhat better knowing I am not the only one struggling with watering tools.

Also I found a stone or cast concrete hose storage container. It has a natural look and is indestructible. It looks perfect under the apple tree. I have a hose reel that is great. The kind that mount on the wall. But I think it’s ugly so I have it where I don’t have to look at it all the time.

None of my quick connects had the feature to stop the water when disconnected so instead of replacing all of them I simply added an “on/off” connector to each one. Works like a charm.

I haven't found a sprinkler I love, the one I thought I loved lasted one summer, seems I remember being pissed off with it and threw it away. It was nice tho, you could change everything right on the sprinkler, it would close for a more narrow spread, even on just one half, go all the way back and forth or whatever you needed in between, aaaand you could change the setting for the distance you wanted it to spray without needing to doll it back at the faucet. That was so handy for between the house and sidewalk, I really don't need it 6' high going 3' wide....*sigh* I do miss it.

But as much as I love love love your channel and love to share your videos I am really reluctant to share this one due to the discussion of using magnetic fields in watering, since the published scientific studies are extremely limited, published only in very specialized journals (at least those I can find on NCBI) and at first glance, seem to be focused on crop production - plants grown for just one growing season.

Yes, there is a lot of research to be done on it. There are some larger trials underway but yep, at this point it's mostly anecdotal reports.

I like the b-hyve valves. Lowe’s had them on sale early spring of this year for 17.00 a piece. I bought all of them so I would have a back up for my 5 zones.

I finally bit the bullet and installed the black Polyethylene Tubing around all my gardens (500 feet was about $100) the zones are hooked up to a similar water timer as yours. it was a little bit of work but well worth it! Some places have drip and some use micro-sprinklers and it covers most of my 2 acres. Saved me hours of watering time and having to lug out houses and sprinklers. Of course in my area this year we are actually unusually wet (eastern PA, 6 inches of rain for July so far) so much so most of my veggie garden is water logged!

Hi Dave! Can you explain those micro sprinklers? We have the 1/2 black poly tubing for our drip system and I've wondered about how we could tie in sprinklers for the sunny patches of grass that always burn out. Did you get the stuff at Home Depot or Lowe's? Thanks! Ellen from Massachusetts.

@@emcg9004 It depends on the amount of area and the how much pressure you have on your system. I have 8 inch spikes and use half circle heads spaced at regular intervals to water my plants I also have micro valves to be able to turn them off if needed. you have to experiment a bit to find the number and spacing . you can only use 1 sprayer for each 1/4" tap from the distribution

Sprinklers - I like my simple owl eye sprinkler. It can cover quite a bit when the faucet is turned on full.

Totally following all the comments on this one. We source our water out of the lake behind our house and talk about no water pressure….😩. I don’t think it’s possible to find a good sprinkler so I’ve committed myself to the 3 hour chore by hand because I’M SO OVER IT!! We have a little over an acre an I don’t have the patience for the “wait and see if it works” plan!!

Drippy quick connects are my pet peeve. I have the B-hyve but we just have one unit that controls four zones. Two are drip and two are sprinklers for the grass. I’m not sure why you had to have separate units.
