*It was cool seeing you so pumped about that big one. I couldn't agree more: The reality check for most of us on "average" local lakes is that catching a few walleyes from 14-18″ is a great day on the water. A bonus 23-24" fish is a good one! And cracking a 27-28" just doesn't happen often...sometimes you might only get 1 a year out of an average lake...it's super special when it does happen and SO rewarding. 👊 Keep grinding, dude!*

You nailed it dude, so true of you’re an actually walleye guy on an average lake. I catch a ton of fish between 14-18” religiously. A 20-23” is good and a 26”+ is epic!

Tom, love your catch and release message. I love fishing, and I think most of us if we ask ourselves, do we want to catch fish to eat or catch fish? We would respond with catch fish! If you want to eat walleyes go to a restaurant. They are probably from Lake Winnipeg in Canada. Guys, go out, catch them and release them. Keep on Truckin, Tom.

I agree with what Michael Tapper is saying. Don't let the doubters and haters affect your content. I've learned tons from you over the last couple of years. No matter where you are fishing and educating, the technique your are sharing can apply everywhere at one time of year or another. Keep positive and keep providing the education.

There are so many fisherman from out of the area that keep everything they catch. I can see the fish cleaning station at the end of the boat ramp from my rented camping spot. I see and understand your message on catch and release. In the marina everyone is complaining about how bad the fishing is. And yes it's getting worse here in Montana also. One guy I work with doesn't believe there are any fish in Fort Peck. Ya I know what the smart asses are gonna say, but that is a risk. Thanks Tom for being such a good ambassador to the sport, and helping those of us who listen. 👍

Dude that is cool I wish I could figure out the Saginaw bay and tear them up. Great job
@denniscrane97533 жыл бұрын
During spring the near shore waters of Saginaw Bay also support a good trolling bite for walleye. Early in the spring when the water temperatures are colder than 50 degrees, crankbaits such as the Rapala Deep Husky Jerk, Bandit 5/8-ounce Walleye, Berkley No. 9 Flicker Minnow and Reef Runner 800 series routinely produce limit catches when trolled 1.2 to 1.8 MPH. Crankbaits are always more productive when fished in combination with planer boards that help spread out lines and cover more water. Later in the spring when the water temperature of Saginaw Bay spikes beyond the 50-degree threshold, the "spinner bite" on Saginaw Bay kicks into full force. Nightcrawler harnesses or what many anglers simply refer to as "spinners" produce best when fished in combination with a two-ounce bottom bouncer sinker. This classic, structure fishing technique produces countless Saginaw Bay walleye. The most popular blade style and sizes include Colorado and Indiana blades in the No. 3, 4 and 5 sizes. Spinner rigs can be slow-trolled or drifted across the endless flats of Saginaw Bay. In the spring of the year, most of the walleye are going to be found in water less than 20 feet deep, making this the perfect time of year for small boat anglers to cash in on the walleye bonanza

We went to Hardy Dam Pond in Michigan yesterday..9/23/21 and caught nothing. Seen lots of fish on bottom in various depths. We tried Hyper Rattles, V-Rods, Google Eye jigs tipped with 3 inch sucker minnows, we even trolled with Flicker Minnows. We fished from first light till 5:30 pm. In certain areas it appeared that there was an enormous amount of bright green alge floating on the surface. Lots of green blade grass floating as well. The water temperature was 61 degrees in the main reservoir (approximately 4000 acres) and 51 degrees way upstream in the river section below the next dam (Rogers Dam). Could this possibly be fall turnover already, and if so, should I expect the Walleye bite to get better as the water gets colder. Thanks Tom for All your Invaluable education and Inspiration.
@johnshear23733 жыл бұрын
Wow, I gotta spend more time on those lakes looking for the weeds when I'm up in that area. So much water, so little time. My home lakes don't have decent walleye so I don't get much practice doing that but I try to do it looking for bass. Now that I have side imaging on my Ghost trolling motor I can scan the weeds easier and more stealthy than the big motor. I'm stubborn and will not buy minnows so I use a lot of Gulp and plastics and enjoy videos using those. Have you tried Gulp as an alternative to live? In my limited experience with walleyes they seem to have a keen sense of smell and are harder to fool.

How would you approach an even smaller lake? I have several man-made lakes around me 200-500 acre. No real structure, just shallow at the top getting deeper toward the bottom at an earthen dam and spillway. Pretty shallow max depth 15-30ft. Does it just become all about weeds at that point?
@TargetWalleye3 жыл бұрын
This time of year I'd focus on the dam/spillway you mentioned. That moving water will draw baitfish and walleyes. If it's got a deep washout hole in front of it, more and more will pile in there the later you get into the season. Otherwise I'd say your best bet is to sneak out after dark and troll shallow cranks over the weeds. Cover a lot of water and if you stick a fish, drop a waypoint and go back thru that area. Good luck this fall!

The real overlooked problem with these fisheries is the overpopulation of Muskies and the assistance in practice of catch and release of these overpopulated Muskies ....oh' , did I hurt some fragile idiot feelings 🤔 It's the same analogy of wolves and deer , they say each wolf takes A deer per week , this adds up .... so if A musky takes 1 walleye between 8 and 15 inches each week , this also adds up ! In my opinion , the DNR should designate lakes to either be A walleye lake or A musky lake with the deep lakes with A Cisco population being g for musky and all the others for walleye , this would also keep the stunted perch population down and create better size structure for perch as is on Lake Gogebic in UP Michigan where there's no pollution of Muskies and huge numbers of walleye and huge jumbo perch
