This was VERY informative... I was hoping for a short-cut, but this level of detail demands it. Oil over acrylic is genius too! I will be patient and stay vigilant... thank you SO much!

Wow, you have the patience of a saint! Very inspirational. Thank you. The country you live in and paint is gorgeous. I live in Wyoming and have whole life (63). I absolutely love the countryside here. I googled "how to paint sagebrush" and this video was first. You are so right to put the kind of detail in the painting that you did. It makes a huge difference. I need to look at it as a challenge...and a challenge it will be...because I don't come by patience naturally. Thanks again.

Your commentary is so helpful! I learn so much every time I watch your videos - especially the golden nuggets like your explanation for why you switch to oils. I can see how the thinness of the lines you get from it is super helpful. Your paintings are really beautiful! That hillside is lovely ...

"There really is no short cut...." So true! I wish I'd had this video two weeks ago. I just finished a painting last week with tons of desert grass in the foreground, and after fumbling around trying different short cuts (I'm new to painting), that was my conclusion, too...one blade at a time to get the look I wanted. I like the tip of finishing with oils--interesting idea.

It's the only way to do it! Thanks and it's definitely worth a try in my opinion. You should give oils a go one time and see how you like it

I think your the best acrylic teacher. These days people tend to naturally go towards oil. Given that it probably is more vibrant etc but I prefer acrylics because it dries quick meaning I don't have to spend months on it because it dries out too slow .

Thanks I appreciate it. That's a fantastic question as I was thinking about how I was so impressed with being able to do that as well. It's really quite easy and I will try to incorporate that in a future video. I just used some round shaped brushes and Blended it all using small circular motions. The round blender brush did wonders for this

Wow! The entire painting is so realistic you can hear the hooves of the deer crunch on the ground, smell the grasses and sagebrush and breath the crisp air. Your more recent paintings look like you've found a whole new cache of inspiration, and it has exploded onto the canvasses. This one is absolutely gorgeous! How long, in real time, did it take to paint the foliage and grasses? I'd love to watch this one, in real time.
@chuckblackart6 жыл бұрын
Love to hear that! I've been feeling better about my recent paintings as well so it's nice to have the reassurance. I think it was somewhere between five and six hours to do the grass area. It's just much harder for me to share these larger paintings in real time. Thanks Mark!

An old woman showed me years ago her little trick for steading your hand so your not holding it in the air for hours at a time a little stability... so she had a small thin broom handle about 3, 4 foot long. Rest it between your legs or on a leg waist area , the top leand on the top of the esal . Resting the side of your hand holding the brush other hand holding the top of the stick and moving it side to side as you paint.. wanted to share this. Ot really helps... love the grass.. takes time, but the detail more stunning and real is worth the time..nice
@SteveL20126 жыл бұрын
Is there a tutorial on the entire painting? The deer is stunning. I really like how the background (mountains and sky) reflect natural color-not the punched up, cartoonish color seen on so many other KZbin channels. This is masterful.
@jeannewudrick89603 жыл бұрын
So helpful Chuck! My question is : When you paint very fine lines with oils, do you thin your paint with Liquin or turps? and what number and type of brush do you use? I have tried even a liner brush but still get too thick a line. Thanks.
@GiantArtProductions6 жыл бұрын
the way i always make foreground details pop in the landscape is to seal off a part of the canvas with gloss medium varnish, it creates a barrier layer you can paint over.....of course this is for if you can to paint in acrylics all the way through.
@chuckblackart6 жыл бұрын
My method is actually similar to this. So I do most of the work in acrylics and then spray it with a gloss spray. Then I paint oil over the top to make it pop and if I need to fix something I just use paint thinner and wipe it off and start over. Great minds think alike!

Thank you for covering why you used oil for the finishing, problem was everybody almost as far as I have seen uses that techniques but never know why! I thrived a lot with keeping the colors within the brush for a line, but they always seem to fade away a lot sooner that I intent to paint. I will use the same technique, first time deciding to buy oil color! Again, thank you for your time and effort. Good luck with your next works.

Deer Chuck, Hello from North Central Washington. Okanogan country. I love the way you paint. Very much like the way I do. I want to thank you for taking the time to post videos of your work and also for taking the time to show us how to do paint like you do. I was having trouble with some of the painting I am working on, a white buffalo, and the foreground was not happening for me. But after watching this video on how to do the foliage, I was able to get a good idea on how to get it right for me. I actually watched it a few times so I can really learn from it. I am almost done with my painting and if there is a way to send you a pic of it??? I will. Thanks again, Rebecca Knight
