If you used golden high fluid acrylics would you still consider varnishing your paintings? I’m torn between using golden for how durable the finish is or createx for how they can be erased (the downside being that the dry finish isn’t durable and seems a bit scary to me). I’ve been using golden heavy body with added water for a while but your erasing techniques with createx are really interesting. I feel like that ability to create highlights that easily would help elevate my work and process. I use both an airbrush and traditional brushes so my work usually has different “finishes” in different areas (some areas are more matte while others are satin because of the airbush vs applying paint with a normal brush). I wonder if a varnish would make everything look the same and get rid of that look which I quite like. Love your videos by the way.

Great questions! I agree with a lot of what you said. So with a varnish, you will def lose that effect you like where some parts are matte while others are glossy. The varnish tends to even everything out to an even finish. Golden paints are so strong that varnishing isn't really needed. It's good for protecting the painting (dust &UV light) for the long term, but not necessary. Createx illustration colors will nearly fall apart without a varnish or clear coat. Keep on painting and best of luck!!

Great video. Thanks. Would the same system work for Winsor & Newton Artisan water mixable varnishes? I.e would I need to thin the varnish with distilled water as per your video? thanks

Thanks, but I'm not sure since I've never used that varnish. Sorry!

Awesome tutorial with very clear steps and instructions! Do you have any tips on keeping the air brush clean/maintained?

Thanks! Eventually I'll have a video up on how I maintain my airbrushes. Stay tuned!

The bottle says not to thin with water. Good to see it doesn't really matter.

Thank you so much for this informative video! I just started sealing my dolls with an airbrush gun and I want to use liquidtex varnish and I been searching high and low for this type of tutorial! Thank you! Where do you get your strainer and the big plastic cup that screws on top of the airbrush gun? I have a TRN-1 iwata airbrush gun
@theartworkshop2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The stainers I buy are these 190micron ones from Amazon- amzn.to/3QxZqYD They are super inexpensive and work really well. Sorry, I'm not sure if they make large plastic cups for the TRN-1.

Great tutorial! I am in the middle of using LIquitex Gloss Varnish in my airbrush (20psi and diluted with water). The first coat came out glossy, but the subsequent coats (30 minutes between) have turned out matte/ flat. Any advice on what I'm doing wrong? Thank you, in advance.
@cmussomaha3 жыл бұрын
By the way, I used it on a plastic, unpainted water effect sheet from Plastruct that I painted from the under side leaving the top surface clear and free of paint.
@theartworkshop3 жыл бұрын
That is strange; more coats of glossy varnish should only increase the amount of gloss. You may not be spraying enough varnish. 20 psi out of an airbrush for varnish or primer is too low. In my eclipse with a .35mm nozzle, I'd spray varnish at 30-35psi. (20 psi is for an HVLP or LVLP) What airbrush are you using?
@cmussomaha3 жыл бұрын
@@theartworkshop Thanks for your reply. I have a Grex side bucket loader. Would the age of an open bottle of Liquitex make a difference? It is probably 7 to 10 years old. How about distance from the object? I'm about 6 to 8 inches with a wide spray area / pattern.
@theartworkshop3 жыл бұрын
@@cmussomaha yeah, it could be the age of the varnish. I think most acrylics have a shelf life. Yes- 6-8 inches away is perfect. Make sure to try it on some test sheets of paper to see what it looks like. Don't want to ruin any good work with a bad varnish!
@cmussomaha3 жыл бұрын
@@theartworkshop I used a hand brush on a spot and it was glossy. Would tap water vs. distilled water make a difference? Still, the Model Master clear gloss coat had no affect over the Liquitex coat.

Great video! What compressor do you use with your spray gun?
@theartworkshop2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I use a larger (6 gallon) California air compressor. It's perfect for a few coats of varnish, allowing it to refill between coats. Here is an amazon link to the one I have amzn.to/3h9waHf Cannot recommend it enough!

Why do you use a 190 filter funnel instead of a 125 superfine funnel?
@theartworkshop2 жыл бұрын
either will work fine. Just want to make sure I strain out any dried out varnish. Go with whatever you have.

no offense , Great Video, , Audio/ Narration Not Great Whatsoever ...I say this All Due To You NOT Pausing between Your Sentences , as its very very hard/difficult for one to retain what your saying..also as well , Very Annoying/Irritating

no offense taken! Sorry about that. I agree with you- The audio was awful on my earlier videos like this one. I plan on remaking a video on varnishing with better audio in the future because this one kind of sucks
