Hello, from the OCC brand what would you choose (and how many) for the best accuracy and tiny details (small figurines, facial features, etc)? I'd like to buy 2, or maybe 3 or 4 OCC knives and can't decide. "1 - 7/8", "1 - 1/2", "miny detail", "1 - 3/4"? All of them? Thanks!
@CarvingisFun3 жыл бұрын
Howdy! I personally own the following OCC knives and it covers every single whittling need I have: 1 - 7/8" blade for roughing 1 - 1/2" blade for general carving 1" detail blade for small cuts You could also just grab the 1 - 3/4" blade for a good all around whittling knife and maybe a 1" detail knife for the small cuts.

I just got my first OCC knife, 1 7/8" roughing knife. Sharp out of the box. It cuts pretty much the same as my sharpened and honed Flexcut. The handle is a bit longer and that gives a little more leverage. I like the shape of the handle better than I expected. From what I've read, it should hold it's edge well. Paid about $25 + shipping. Pleased with it.

Hey Brian, I asked a video or so ago if you'd review an old timer knife. Just forget about that knife and if you decide to do an old style knife look at the eight dollar imperial jackmaster on amazon. It is a Barlow as well but its really cheap and made of soft stainless steel but definitely a good knife to pass to a child.
@CarvingisFun4 жыл бұрын
I saw that one, just worry about how long the cutting edge will last for whittling.

Very informative. What 2 or 3 knife styles of OCC, or other makers, would you recommend to purchace for a beginner???
@CarvingisFun4 жыл бұрын
Well, I can tell you that I use my 1-1/2" and 1-3/4" knives the most. Every now and then, I will use my 2" and 3/4" knives but about 95% of my carvings have been done with the knife size used in this video to make the little carving for the demo. So, pick up a knife between 1-1/2" and 2 inches as well as a knife around 1" and you should have just about everything covered for most carving projects.

Hi, If you were to choose 5 knives what would you choose? Like a set you would always use .

For any brand or just OCC? For me I primarily use my OCC 1-7/8" knife, OCC 1-3/8" detail knife, Helvie Detail knife, and my Flexcut stub sloyd.

Hey Brian I was wondering if you could DM me the pictures of your old timer knives. I don't want to waster your timer but I really love looking at old style knives even the ones I can't afford like great eastern cutlery

What occtool knives do recommend for biginnners?
@CarvingisFun Жыл бұрын
I like using blades between 1.5 and 1.75 inches in length for general whittling. Handle design is up to you but the larger handles fit my hand better.

Hey Brian, do you still have your buck 55?
@CarvingisFun4 жыл бұрын
Not anymore. I'm not a knife collector and don't like it when I have tools sitting around and not being used. I usually pass them along to friends and family or trade them off to find something more my speed. In this case, I traded mine out to be able to afford some new knives to test out.

What do you use for you finger guards? They look homemade. Just getting into the hobby and need some protection.

I like to use self adhering bandage wrap (ace wrap) as they are cheap and reuseable.

Would the small or large handle be better for a woman?
@CarvingisFun Жыл бұрын
I would go with a smaller handle for the average woman.

Are they good for very hard woods? If not, what is?
@CarvingisFun8 ай бұрын
I use them for cherry and walnut all the time. But if you want some really nice higher end carving tools Deepwoods Ventures is a wonderful option. The blades are a bit thicker and hold up to harder woods

@@CarvingisFun - I have a bunch of purple heart and rosewood 2x2 sticks that I'm unsure of what steel standard is appropriate. Purple Heart is a stupid hard wood. I have a lot of whittling to do.

I have some purple heart that I have been playing around with as well! The OCC knives handle it well enough but take frequent stropping breaks to keep them sharp!

@@CarvingisFun - Is reprofiling an issue with stupid hard woods in your opinion? What would you go with if you had stupid hard woods up to ironwood? Just got interested in this topic after I noticed it. Durrnit! Now I gotta edumacate myself on a new thing. Thanks for the headache, bro.
@CarvingisFun8 ай бұрын
I mainly use thicker knives with a edge angle between 15 and 20 degrees. Sloyd knives are also a great option for removing large chunks of wood.
