This is the best video ever! Nothing is worse than finishing a mosaic pattern and the yarn goes to crap after a short time. There is a lot of flashy or beautifully colored yarn out there that just makes the mosaic experience feel awful. It's so rewarding to find that great yarn!

I have purchased 3 of your patterns and they have been brilliant. Have made 3 blankets for my granddaughters and they love them. I watched the segment on yarns for mosaic and it was very informative as is this one. Please don't stop doing your videos. I just bought a bunch of KitteKnits at a local yarn store - Coveted Yarn in Essex MA still has them at the moment, if you’re familiar.

There are maybe people like me that cannot afford those yarns so I was hoping you would recommend acrylic substitutes. I have felt big twist yarn and I found it to be scratchy and cheap feeling 😢. I'll keep looking. Thank you for your time.

I haven't tried that yarn yet, probably because they don't have it in worsted weight which is what I'm most comfortable using, and it's the size I use for almost all of my patterns. Hobbii does have great yarn though so I'd definitely give it a try!

Thank you for this! I have been really getting into mosaic crochet lately and like you, I am so dismayed by the fuzziness of acrylic over time. I recently got some Paintbox cotton aran for some mosaic crochet placemats and the design is so crisp. It is not the most fun or luxurious yarn to crochet with, but I think the design will stay true for a long time to come. I will definitely try some of the other cottons you mentioned!

I'm glad you liked the video! The Paintbox is definitely a tougher yarn, but it holds up so well. The other cottons i mentioned are a lot smoother and easier to crochet with.

thanks so much for this video! i just recently got into mosaic and tapestry crochet, so this is kinda perfect. i'm especially interested in that metallic yarn, never found a soft metallic yarn before, and excited to try some of my velvet yarn in a project. i never thought to try using it for mosaic crochet! have you ever heard of the indie dyer Mace of Skeins? i've never used her yarn before, but the colors are amazing and i've only heard good things from people who have used it.

Great info thank you! Just getting into mosaic crochet. Would you recommend #5 chunky? I have a ton of Berocco Vintage Chunky in my stash. Going to make a blanket. Should I exchange it for #4 worsted? I have 30 days to do the exchange.

I haven't used bulky before, only berroco vintage worsted. It really is up to you if you're comfortable using a thicker yarn. For blankets it could end up very heavy because mosaic crochet is almost double layered because of the overlay stitches.

Love all the information! I always use acryllic for blankets because it's cheaper... i was wondering wich of these yarns are best to make a blanket? I only used cotton to make some dolls and they don't feel comfortable for big blankets. And is it also possible to combine these yarns? like the merino wool with the hand dyed yarns?

Hi! You could try any of the wool/acrylic blends I had listed in the video for blankets. As for combining yarns, as long as the 2 yarns are the same weight/thickness you absolutely can! I like using cotton and hand dyed merino in the same project.

Thank you, this was super helpful (even when not buying online, to have a list of yarns to look for in a store, big box or LYS). Quick Question: When you mentioned your favorite black, it is a SW Merino. Do you mix that black wool with cotton in some projects? I've never had much luck mixing yarns of different fibers so I am very curious if it works well for Mosaic Crochet. Thank you!

I'm glad you found it helpful! I do mix yarn fibers in some projects. For flat projects like table runners and wall hangings, cotton is best, but merino wool comes in so many gorgeous colors, so I'll use both! The key is making sure the wool is as thick as the cotton when they are both stretched, so I'll use a worsted cotton and an aran merino to even it out.
