Value yarn is the only reason I ever got into crochet. I have a very low budget when it comes to hobbies, so it was really intimidating to see how expensive yarn can be. I wish other yarns were more accessible but I'm happy that these yarns exist because so many people wouldn't be doing fiber arts if it weren't for these more affordable yarns!

Technically, "crochet yarns" are supposed to have a z-twist because crochet knotting works opposite an s-twist. The yarns you kept listing as easily splitting are only loosely s-twisted in the first place, so there's no way for them to overcome the motions removing the twist. They're nice and soft for knitting which adds an s-twist, though. Since most companies only produce s-twist yarn in the West, if you're crocheting, look for a yarn that is very well twisted. I suspect this is one reason Red Heart gets regular high marks among crocheters, even though it's not as soft. I also suggest looking into Turkish knitting yarns (not just "made in Turkey" but manufactured for a Turkish knitting-method market) as Turkish knitting adds a similar twist to crochet, so their yarns are typically finished with a z-twist. You can also unply down to the z-twisted singles that make up s-twisted yarns, but that takes a LOT of time. Yes, I have done it, I had my kids help me. LOL

How would one go about identifying if it has an s twist or z Is this listed on the packaging? Thank you!
@therealdonnawagner
@therealdonnawagner 10 ай бұрын
@@aaronblasyak1527 If you're in a brick and mortar store, just hold up the yarn in front of you. If the diagonal runs from top left to bottom right, that's an s-twist (like the diagonal in the letter s). If it runs from top right down to bottom left, that's a z-twist (like the diagonal in the letter z). If you're shopping online and they don't specify in the product listing, I suggest emailing the seller or manufacturer of the yarn you're considering buying or doing a Google search for reviews that might detail such info. 😊

@@nony_mation Nice that you're getting into spinning! If you really like how your yarn turned out overall, you can just unply down to s-twisted singles and use those for knitting, or just re-spin everything into the correct direction. It should be super easy since you've already drafted the fibers. I recommend letting the respun rest on your spindle or bobbin before you ply the newly twisted strands. Kind of like how curly hair pulled back into a tight ponytail can often straighten to a degree, spinning fibers tend to relax into new positions when they're under a bit of tension. A couple caveats to the re-spinning suggestion would be if you used fibers that are super grippy and may have trouble separating when you unply, or if you used fibers that are super slick or short stapled and were difficult to manage the first time. But I'm sure any crocheter would love to receive such a beautiful gift, and you absolutely might be able to get away with using it for knitting the way a lot of crocheters use knitting yarn for crochet! Either way, I hope your finished works get used to make something beautiful. 😊

I work at Joanns and my job for the most part has been stocking yarns. It's given me some interesting insights. Big twist is loosely wound and has strands of yarn hanging out all over the place. Every time I put them out I have to check for loose strands and tuck them back in so that they don't make an absolute mess of the display. By contrast, Caron simply soft is really well wound, and there are never strands drooping. Also, the bag they come wrapped in is of much higher quality than Big Twist. Sometimes strands of Big Twist yarn are stuck in the seam of the bag and I have to pull it out. That never happens with Caron. Just a little thing, but it indicates to me that Caron is of much higher quality, and those winding/bagging the yarn actually care about what they're doing. Pound of Love and Red Heart etc are so scratchy that I don't enjoy stocking them. They just don't feel good against my hands. Bernat softee baby yarn is absolutely delightful. It's light, it's soft, it's cheap. Very limited colour palette though. Just yesterday I stocked a whole bunch of Big Twist "party" yarn. That's a delightful weight, and has some lovely colouring. Looked really eye catching in the display.

Oh good to know they’re not all like that! I’ve used it before but didn’t care for it much. I remember mistakenly trying to use it the first time I crocheted. That was a mistake 😅 Then I watched a video where someone was suggesting to not use cotton when you’re brand new to crochet. So I went out and bought some light colored acrylic and it made a huge difference! I assumed all cotton yarn was the same, which was a bummer to me because I’d love to get more into cotton, bamboo, and other natural fibers. I mostly crochet with acrylic still. But it’s awesome to hear that other people didn’t like sugar n cream yarn and have found different cotton yarn that they really love! 👏🏻 I will have to try the one you suggested and some others to hopefully find a cotton yarn I actually love. 😊

I love Red Heart yarn. It's tough as nails, it doesn't pill, the colors are gorgeous, and it holds It's shape and color for life. There are ways to soften it. For one, soak the finished piece in col water and a cup of vinegar for twenty minutes. This works pretty well. At any rate, it will get softer every time it's washed. Used fabric softener. And Red Heart makes a yarn that's a little more expensive. Red Heart with Love, and Red Heart Soft. They're a lot softer. And another yarn I like that you didn't mention is I Love this Yarn! sold at Hobby Lobby. Very soft, lots of colors and fairly inexpensive.

Their dye process is SO consistent that i couldnt tell a difference in dye lots when i ran out of colors i'd thrifted and had to order more. I find I like Big Twist. Great value of course….but I like the weight of it too. Now I’m wondering, as we all crochet a little differently. Some grab the yarn above, some below etc. and they could be a difference between left and right handed Crocheters. My point is….all yarns have a twist. A low twist will make a yarn splitty…or pill easier. With Big Twist it is no different. Depending on your style of stitch…..I’d like to do a study of 6 folks using the same yarn and their rankings.? It might be fun to see if everyone (basically) ranks the same. I do agree with some of your other yarn choices. Great video….thanks for making it. 13:54

I didn't know pound of love pills badly. I have enjoyed working with it, and was going to make a blanket with the antique white, a color I love. Now I'm rethinking that. Maybe I'll find the color in another brand. I do think you should give Basic Stitch another test and be able to explain why you don't like it. I think I used it a while back, but nothing remarkable stands out in my mind, good or bad. I also love HL I Love this cotton, however, I've used it for many kitchen dishcloths and I have been disappointed in how quickly the more vibrant colors fade. It's held up a little better in some hot pads, but Lily Sugar n Cream or Walmart Peaches & Cream, is definitely better for the kitchen, IMHO.

I really want to make more amigurumi with chenille but I feel VERY overwhelmed when trying to choose which yarn to get. There’s so many, and since it’s more expensive, at least from a yardage standpoint, I get worried to spend money on them without knowing if I’ll like them. I know that’s just part of the process with crocheting and knitting. You have to try all sorts of yarn, patterns, hooks, needles, etc until you find what you really love. But it’s also nice to have other people’s suggestions on yarn since they’ve already gone through the whole trial and error process.

I've been crocheting for a long time; 5 decades. I liked your ideas in this video and hearing your reasoning. I would be interested to see your ranking of chenilles. I do like "Pound of Love", I used it to make a twin size blanket for one of my children. However, I have some issues with Sugar and Cream. My main problems are as follows: that colors are not always colorfast (even when washed on cold/delicate)--use a color catcher sheet. The yarn sheds lint in the first two or three washes. The regular sized ball (around 200-ish yards, solids) is too small for the type of project I want to do with it. If you like varigateds or ombres, you get LESS yardage (10-20 yds) than the solids for the same price. Some of the colorways are not available in the larger size ball (400 yards, ish). There is even less of a choice of hues in the cones (1000-ish? yds). Instead of Sugar and Cream, I prefer to use Lion Brand's "cotton 24/7" or Hobby Lobby's "I love this cotton" if I'm doing a "pretty" or non-workhorse type of project.

I mostly use big twist value, red heart super saver, and lilly sugar and creme. I have found that the smaller big twist value skeins are more splitty that the bigger size. Red Heart can be rough with certain colors. I have been using lily sugar and creme for market bags and a top to wear for my graduation.

My same thoughts about the LB Basic Stitch. It doesn't have the bounce or stretch like a normal acrylic and it splits easy. I think it might be the twist.

I have been crocheting 40+ years. Lilly Sugar and Cream is awesome. I love it. I really like Pattons Kroy Sock yarn too for footies. This is a fingering weight wool and nylon mix. It is more for an experienced crocheter. I love Red Heart Super Saver. There is a hitch. I teach crochet and only use it for beginners. Once they get the hang of it, I suggest other yarns. For a beginner, it is perfect.

The only time I’ve used cotton for crocheting was with Wool and the gang yarn and I made a dress for a friend. I normally only knit with cotton. I think the lily cotton yarn is nice but I prefer a thinner cotton yarn for making washcloths or dish cloths. I have no experience with the lion brand yarn mentioned. Super saver is good for blankets and hats. My knitting group mitts and crocheted hats for the homeless and super saver is good for that purpose. I know a lot of people who are yarn illiterate and think super saver is for everything. For some reason super saver variegated yarns are softer than the solid colors. Caron simply soft is one of my favorite yarns. I have no problem with splitting when I use Susan Bates hooks. I notice more splitting with any yarn when I use Boye hooks. I have made many blankets with simple soft and after they have been washed, the blankets are even softer. Believe it or not, simply soft used to be shinier than it is now and that is what appealed to me is it. The finished project have a nice shine to it which made it very pretty.

I am a knitter and my two favorite value yarns are Caron One Pound and Premier Basix. I mainly use them for huge afghan projects. Caron One Pound is a pretty tough, reasonably priced yarn. I have used it to knit floor rugs for my bedrooms, so it's pretty durable. Although it supposedly comes in over 50 colors, when I shop for it, the color options always seem to be limited. But if you like neutrals, those are widely available. I've never had to deal with any splitting with this yarn, although the skeins do tend to cough up some crazy yarn barfs, sometimes. Fortunately, this has never been due to any factory-tied knots. The value yarn underdog, in my view, is Premier Basix. I've only ever used the Basix worsted, so I can only speak to that, but there are other Basix yarns in different weights. The stitch definition of the Basix worsted is superior to all the other value yarns I've used (except LB Vanna's Choice - if you consider that a "value yarn"). The hand-feel on the Basix worsted is noticeably softer than Red Heart, and it softens more after just a wash or two. It comes in a ton of colors that are usually in stock. Best thing: NO KNOTS & NO BARFS. ♥

I have very little trouble with splitting with the Big Twist Value, but I can say that hook choice can make a big difference! The Loops & Threads is great if you want a beefier 4 weight. It definitely is nice to work with, but I like the Big Twist better for wearables or if I want a lighter weight blanket. I actually love them both. I HATE Lilly's Sugar & Cream, but I will use it for certain projects. The colors fade terribly in the wash, which REALLY upsets me. I actually like the RHSS.... hard to resist the color options, it doesn't split, and the projects always look great. I did enjoy your review and love hearing other people's opinions! Nice job on this video. Ill be checking our more on your channel!

Idk if you've tried this already, but soaking Sugar & Cream in vinegar before washing it the first time can help. It's something I've heard people will do with hand-dyed yarns where the colors weren't set properly, so maybe that's a problem with the S&C dyes.

While I totally get not like working with yarns like red heart super saver because of how rough they are, but for me, I do find that it can be very helpful with keeping tension. I personally love, Caron’s Simply Soft. I don’t find it hard to work with at all. It makes the most beautiful and soft baby blankets and they hold up SO well washing after washing with no pilling. The pastel colors- blue, pink, yellow, green, lavender and white go together so well and is not shiny. My first go-to for baby blankets. I am not a fan of Red Heart SS, it is rough, but they have THE best ombre of any yarn. I have a bunch of the old ones though, I don’t think the new ones are as good. But I did like working with the Red Heart Stripes Yarns. Some are softer than others. I love the colors and made some beautiful granny squares with them. I like working with the Peaches and Cream Stripey yarn for pot holders, I think it is softer than Sugar and Cream and the patterns come out so pretty! Hobby Lobby’s I love This Cotton is much softer. Im still a behinner but caron simply soft is wonderful for amigurumi! I was gifted a ton of yarn, lots of redheart ofc, but i hadnt crocheted in years so i figured i should pick it up again. They had a bunch of different colors, so i realized i could try amigurumi! Loved it, and then a skein of caron simply soft stood out to me. Very pretty color, soft, and sleek. I used it and fell in love. I think its fantastic for amigurumi. But apparently a lot of people dont like the shine which is funny, but that makes sense if youre focused on clothes and blankets. For little plush, the shine is delightful, lots of good colors, feels nice in the hand. I hear it doesnt wear well, gets fuzzy easy, and while i did notice splitting, i didnt think it was too troublesome either. I think it provides nice stitch definition, one of the nicest worsted weight acrylics ive ever seen (but i havent seen many). Yarn bee has a soft yarn thats similar and might be a little better quality, doesnt split as much, but caron is more beautiful

So interesting how different people's experience of the same product can be. I thought I hated using cotton yarn, but it turns out that it's just Lily Sugar and Creme I hate! It's rough to my hands, and it splits like crazy for me. I love using Dishie yarn by WeCrochet/Knitpicks (same company) for dishcloths and other home goods, and Hobbii Friends cotton is even better than Dishie IMO. I also like mostly-cotton blends like WeCrochet/KnitPicks Comfy Cotton -- the synthetic fiber it's blended with makes it softer and more durable than 100% cotton while retaining all the good qualities of cotton.

I love your ranking system! I learned to crochet 49 years ago using Red Heart yarn which was all that was available in worsted weight in the rural area where I grew up. At that time it was a soft and comfortable yarn to use. Even after changing to Super Saver skeins it was fairly soft. Then in the 1990's, I think, the texture of their yarn changed drastically and became very scratchy and rough. I quit buying it immediately and started using the other brands that were now available in the urban area where I then lived. I still have some vintage Red Heart yarn in my stash and it still feels soft and cushy. The newer stuff can't compete. It's horrible!!!!!

I also learned with RedHeart in the 80s. It was the most prevalent yarn at the Walmart in my small town. I made baby blankets and granny square stuff and it was so soft. What happened to it? I agree it drastically changed. I didn’t crochet much at all in the 90s cause I got married and college and part time job got in the way. After that I crocheted with Caron simply soft and some other Lion brands. Currently I love Patons classic worsted wool (although it’s not super soft) and several other wool/acrylic blends like Scarfie and an acrylic from Michael’s loops and threads called Impressions which is hard to find, maybe being discontinued 😢. I wish red heart was softer because I love their stripes yarn and camouflage colors. 😊

I've never crocheted anything before but decided that I wanted to learn this year. I figured that a temperature blanket would be a good beginner project. I can work on it a little at a time throughout the year. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it since I'm not even sure if I would like crocheting. I went to Michaels and got the Loops and Thread yarn. It was on sale for half off so I got it for $3 a skein. I just got done with the January square of my blanket and I'm not liking this yarn for my project. It's a good yarn but I wanted my blanket to be light and flowy (does that even make sense) with well-defined stitches. This yarn is stiff and a bit bulky and it pills so the stitches aren't very defined (maybe this is a good thing - I can see a few places where I missed a stitch or put the stitch in the wrong spot). I'm hoping that once I block (is that what it's called?) my squares, the yarn will look and feel better. I kind of wish I had chosen a different yarn for this project but, it is the first thing I've ever crocheted so I wanted something cheap. Next year if I do another temperature blanket, I'll be able to choose a better yarn, especially since I'll know what to look for and what I want in a yarn.

Lion Brand 24/7 mercerized, worsted-weight 100% Cotton Yarn is my favorite among the cottons. Wears and washes well and looks beautiful because of the mercerized sheen.
