Value yarn is the only reason I ever got into crochet. I have a very low budget when it comes to hobbies, so it was really intimidating to see how expensive yarn can be. I wish other yarns were more accessible but I'm happy that these yarns exist because so many people wouldn't be doing fiber arts if it weren't for these more affordable yarns!

However, most of my yarn has come from estate sales, thrift stores, etc, and so I’ve gotten more choosy about what I will use. Thrifted yarns are usually a great bargain !

I work at Joanns and my job for the most part has been stocking yarns. It's given me some interesting insights. Big twist is loosely wound and has strands of yarn hanging out all over the place. Every time I put them out I have to check for loose strands and tuck them back in so that they don't make an absolute mess of the display. By contrast, Caron simply soft is really well wound, and there are never strands drooping. Also, the bag they come wrapped in is of much higher quality than Big Twist. Sometimes strands of Big Twist yarn are stuck in the seam of the bag and I have to pull it out. That never happens with Caron. Just a little thing, but it indicates to me that Caron is of much higher quality, and those winding/bagging the yarn actually care about what they're doing. Pound of Love and Red Heart etc are so scratchy that I don't enjoy stocking them. They just don't feel good against my hands. Bernat softee baby yarn is absolutely delightful. It's light, it's soft, it's cheap. Very limited colour palette though. Just yesterday I stocked a whole bunch of Big Twist "party" yarn. That's a delightful weight, and has some lovely colouring. Looked really eye catching in the display.

Oh good to know they’re not all like that! I’ve used it before but didn’t care for it much. I remember mistakenly trying to use it the first time I crocheted. That was a mistake 😅 Then I watched a video where someone was suggesting to not use cotton when you’re brand new to crochet. So I went out and bought some light colored acrylic and it made a huge difference! I assumed all cotton yarn was the same, which was a bummer to me because I’d love to get more into cotton, bamboo, and other natural fibers. I mostly crochet with acrylic still. But it’s awesome to hear that other people didn’t like sugar n cream yarn and have found different cotton yarn that they really love! 👏🏻 I will have to try the one you suggested and some others to hopefully find a cotton yarn I actually love. 😊

I am a lily sugar and cream stan. Almost done with an oversized sweater made of it. Their dye process is SO consistent that i couldnt tell a difference in dye lots when i ran out of colors i'd thrifted and had to order more. The sweater is only 4 colors (hot orange, sunshine, hot green, and teal) but i ended up ordering 11 colors and have plans for a rainbow sweater next. That stuff is my ride or die for kitchen items and wearables.

I find I like Big Twist. Great value of course….but I like the weight of it too. Now I’m wondering, as we all crochet a little differently. Some grab the yarn above, some below etc. and they could be a difference between left and right handed Crocheters. My point is….all yarns have a twist. A low twist will make a yarn splitty…or pill easier. With Big Twist it is no different. Depending on your style of stitch…..I’d like to do a study of 6 folks using the same yarn and their rankings.? It might be fun to see if everyone (basically) ranks the same. I do agree with some of your other yarn choices. Great video….thanks for making it. 13:54

Thanks! I always appreciate the opinions of experienced crocheters. I especially appreciate the longevity experience. Knowing what yarns stand the test of time. I didn't know pound of love pills badly. I have enjoyed working with it, and was going to make a blanket with the antique white, a color I love. Now I'm rethinking that. Maybe I'll find the color in another brand. I do think you should give Basic Stitch another test and be able to explain why you don't like it. I think I used it a while back, but nothing remarkable stands out in my mind, good or bad. I also love HL I Love this cotton, however, I've used it for many kitchen dishcloths and I have been disappointed in how quickly the more vibrant colors fade. It's held up a little better in some hot pads, but Lily Sugar n Cream or Walmart Peaches & Cream, is definitely better for the kitchen, IMHO.

Value yarn definitely has a purpose. When you are making items for children, you don't want to spend a lot of money on an item they will outgrow in less than a year. Finding nice (ie quality) yarns is the key. They ones you ranked made me chuckle. I like Sugar & Cream for my dishcloths and potholders, but that's about it. I would love to hear more reviews of value yarns. Lion is one of my faves for kids clothing because of the price point and the company commitment to family. Keep up the good work!

I love your ranking system! I learned to crochet 49 years ago using Red Heart yarn which was all that was available in worsted weight in the rural area where I grew up. At that time it was a soft and comfortable yarn to use. Even after changing to Super Saver skeins it was fairly soft. Then in the 1990's, I think, the texture of their yarn changed drastically and became very scratchy and rough. I quit buying it immediately and started using the other brands that were now available in the urban area where I then lived. I still have some vintage Red Heart yarn in my stash and it still feels soft and cushy. The newer stuff can't compete. It's horrible!!!!!

I also learned with RedHeart in the 80s. It was the most prevalent yarn at the Walmart in my small town. I made baby blankets and granny square stuff and it was so soft. What happened to it? I agree it drastically changed. I didn’t crochet much at all in the 90s cause I got married and college and part time job got in the way. After that I crocheted with Caron simply soft and some other Lion brands. Currently I love Patons classic worsted wool (although it’s not super soft) and several other wool/acrylic blends like Scarfie and an acrylic from Michael’s loops and threads called Impressions which is hard to find, maybe being discontinued 😢. I wish red heart was softer because I love their stripes yarn and camouflage colors. 😊

Yes to the chenille yarns video! I’ve only been crocheting for about 9 months and I’ve used chenille yarn twice. Once for spa socks and once for a mushy boi amigurumi. I loved working with it for the amigurumi, although it did take some time for me to finally learn where to place my stitches since it’s very hard to see with the fluffy yarn. I really want to make more amigurumi with chenille but I feel VERY overwhelmed when trying to choose which yarn to get. There’s so many, and since it’s more expensive, at least from a yardage standpoint, I get worried to spend money on them without knowing if I’ll like them. I know that’s just part of the process with crocheting and knitting. You have to try all sorts of yarn, patterns, hooks, needles, etc until you find what you really love. But it’s also nice to have other people’s suggestions on yarn since they’ve already gone through the whole trial and error process.

Brand new crocheter here so this is my humble-don't know-much opinion! I went to a Dollar Store/Tree for paper goods and on my way out I saw an aisle with yarn - one color stood out - Ruby. Being very tactile I had to go squeeze the skeins and before I got thrown out for yarn abuse I bought 2 skeins of Premier Just Yarn worsted for $1.25 (109 yds) each to practice with. I went back 2 days later and bought the rest of it. Color is gorgeous, texture is soft (if stretchy) and easy for me to work with. I've knitted wash cloths with Sugar and Cream that have lasted for years. Glad now to be learning to crochet more than a 2 mile long chain! Great video. Just subscribed!

I have very little trouble with splitting with the Big Twist Value, but I can say that hook choice can make a big difference! The Loops & Threads is great if you want a beefier 4 weight. It definitely is nice to work with, but I like the Big Twist better for wearables or if I want a lighter weight blanket. I actually love them both. I HATE Lilly's Sugar & Cream, but I will use it for certain projects. The colors fade terribly in the wash, which REALLY upsets me. Idk if you've tried this already, but soaking Sugar & Cream in vinegar before washing it the first time can help. It's something I've heard people will do with hand-dyed yarns where the colors weren't set properly, so maybe that's a problem with the S&C dyes.

@@warai8580 I have heard vinegar acts as a softener too, so good idea! Too late for my red swim cover-up that now looks awful. I thought about dying it though.... I'm sure it's worth a try after all the hours I put into it. Thank you for the suggestion!

You sure aren’t wrong about Red Heart! It was the yarn we had in the house growing up, and when I went out to get some Caron (One Pound) the other day because I figured I’d pick up crochet again, I thought “wow, budget yarn sure is softer than I remember!” Nope, Red Heart was just SUPER scratchy.

I mostly use big twist value, red heart super saver, and lilly sugar and creme. I have found that the smaller big twist value skeins are more splitty that the bigger size. Red Heart can be rough with certain colors. I have been using lily sugar and creme for market bags and a top to wear for my graduation.

Just a word of warning to you and other knitters watching this review: I'm unsure how this channel's creator crochets, but generally crocheting twists yarn in the opposite direction that knitting does so yarns that split while crocheting may knit up very nicely.

I love this cotton is such a wonderful yarn and comes in a surprisingly large range of colors. I'm about to start a blanket with it as it's so soft & the cotton will hopefully hold up better than an acrylic. My favorite value yarn though is Hobby Lobby's Yarn Bee Yarntopia. It is the softest acrylic I've ever felt & doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves. It's practically a steal at $3.99 plus 30% off every other week.

I am a knitter and my two favorite value yarns are Caron One Pound and Premier Basix. I mainly use them for huge afghan projects. Caron One Pound is a pretty tough, reasonably priced yarn. I have used it to knit floor rugs for my bedrooms, so it's pretty durable. Although it supposedly comes in over 50 colors, when I shop for it, the color options always seem to be limited. But if you like neutrals, those are widely available. I've never had to deal with any splitting with this yarn, although the skeins do tend to cough up some crazy yarn barfs, sometimes. Fortunately, this has never been due to any factory-tied knots. The value yarn underdog, in my view, is Premier Basix. I've only ever used the Basix worsted, so I can only speak to that, but there are other Basix yarns in different weights. The stitch definition of the Basix worsted is superior to all the other value yarns I've used (except LB Vanna's Choice - if you consider that a "value yarn"). The hand-feel on the Basix worsted is noticeably softer than Red Heart, and it softens more after just a wash or two. It comes in a ton of colors that are usually in stock. Best thing: NO KNOTS & NO BARFS. ♥

Interesting ranking. My favorite is not even on your list. I love Premier Basix next is Hobby Lobby I love This Yarn. The first yarn I ever crocheted with was Red Heart Super Saver and I still like it. It has gotten better over the years, it has the best colorway selection, and it washer/dryer safe and last for years. Love the Omber colors. My final yarn is Bernat Super Value yarn. It also has great colors. Do I use all the other you mentioned, yes. If the sale is great I will buy and use. Hate yarns novelty yarns and Lion Brand Homespun, they are too hard for me to use.

I've never crocheted anything before but decided that I wanted to learn this year. I figured that a temperature blanket would be a good beginner project. I can work on it a little at a time throughout the year. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on it since I'm not even sure if I would like crocheting. I went to Michaels and got the Loops and Thread yarn. It was on sale for half off so I got it for $3 a skein. I just got done with the January square of my blanket and I'm not liking this yarn for my project. It's a good yarn but I wanted my blanket to be light and flowy (does that even make sense) with well-defined stitches. This yarn is stiff and a bit bulky and it pills so the stitches aren't very defined (maybe this is a good thing - I can see a few places where I missed a stitch or put the stitch in the wrong spot). I'm hoping that once I block (is that what it's called?) my squares, the yarn will look and feel better. I kind of wish I had chosen a different yarn for this project but, it is the first thing I've ever crocheted so I wanted something cheap. Next year if I do another temperature blanket, I'll be able to choose a better yarn, especially since I'll know what to look for and what I want in a yarn.

While I totally get not like working with yarns like red heart super saver because of how rough they are, but for me, I do find that it can be very helpful with keeping tension. And in the roughness, it softens up so well in the wash (especially if that first wash it with vinegar instead of fabric softener) so I don’t mind it being rough when my project is working up.

Im still a behinner but caron simply soft is wonderful for amigurumi! I was gifted a ton of yarn, lots of redheart ofc, but i hadnt crocheted in years so i figured i should pick it up again. They had a bunch of different colors, so i realized i could try amigurumi! Loved it, and then a skein of caron simply soft stood out to me. Very pretty color, soft, and sleek. I used it and fell in love. I think its fantastic for amigurumi. But apparently a lot of people dont like the shine which is funny, but that makes sense if youre focused on clothes and blankets. For little plush, the shine is delightful, lots of good colors, feels nice in the hand. I hear it doesnt wear well, gets fuzzy easy, and while i did notice splitting, i didnt think it was too troublesome either. I think it provides nice stitch definition, one of the nicest worsted weight acrylics ive ever seen (but i havent seen many). Yarn bee has a soft yarn thats similar and might be a little better quality, doesnt split as much, but caron is more beautiful

Tip about yarn splitting.. some yarns are spun with an "S" twist while others have a "Z" twist. I don't remember which is better for which craft, but one is better suited for knitting and the other for crochet (there's more nuance, but that's the gist). Essentially with crochet, it tends to untwist fibers in a particular twist pattern and that's why the caron simply soft splits like CRAZY with crochet, but is perfectly fine with knitting!

I have no splitting issues with Pound of Love, that's why I think it's great to try new stitches. As for Lily S& C, I'm in the middle. I hate the splits and the roughness but love the color choices, and I have made lots of placemats and table runners. Totally with you on Caron Simply Soft. Splits horribly but also I just find the slippery texture doesn't lend itself well to my stitches. I recently tried Loops and Threads soft and shiny and while it's slippery, it didn't split for me at all. So if you need a sub try this one. I also love Hobbi I HL cotton (although I try not to buy yarn from HL since I don't agree with their policies....luckily it moved away from us). I'm a big fan of Caron Cotton cakes too, never splits! Oh, I recently tried Big Twist party and I really liked it! Was softer than I thought. Some parts of the skein can get a little untwisted and this annoys me but most of it was fine, and I loved the colors.

For me, my favorite yarns depend on what I'm making with them. For kitchen items, Sugar 'n' Cream is where to go. I think my mother literally used miles of it; she made and sold pot holders and coasters. Simply Soft makes great baby items. Red Heart is great for afghans, it wears like iron and comes in lots of colors. My own personal favorite is Bernat Satin; I don't know if you'd consider that a value yarn, but it works up beautifully, is soft to the skin and makes clothing that you actually want to wear. My main problem with it is that none of the stores in my area carry it, and I HATE mail-ordering, and it's even getting scarce that way.

That's what I picked up to start with and currently am collecting a fair stash of for several planned blankets. I haven't strayed to try out other brands yet other than a few small skeins of Walmart brand variegated stuff I grabbed when I first started. I already wanted to try the Caron Cakes and the Sugar and Cream but this moved it a little further up on my list to get to it faster. lol I am curious if you like all (or most of) the Caron cakes or if that rating is just for the cotton cake alone?

okay, I wanna share my opinions on the yarns I use! 1. Sugar n' Cream: I would honestly put it in a tier in between your top two. my main issue with it is that it splits very easily and the separate strands of yarn in the twist are really noticable (it doesn't look like one strand of yarn basically). I do love the colors and smaller sized skeins though and the fact that it's a more common cotton yarn available 2. Red Heart Super Saver :I would move it up a tier. It doesn't feel great to me but it's pretty cheap and common so i use it for projects that aren't clothes for blankets. It holds up pretty well and is pretty strong. But I tend to do smaller projects so I always get stuck with the large skeins! 3. Caron Cakes: Just a note- I've only ever used an acrylic one but i did really like it. Super soft, nice and thick, and only minimal splitting. it was kinda slippery on my hook like other acrylic yarns aren't but i would still say top tier.

It's only within the last couple of years I began trying more than just value yarns. They still have to be reasonable. Walmart's mainstay is better than Red Heart. I was surprised that the RH granny square yarn isn't as rough as the rest of the line. I prefer Premier home cotton over sugar or peaches and cream. Premier also has a basix stitch which is nice to work with, though sometimes their 4 wt can be rather thin, same with Herschner's worsted 8. It's soft but a thin 4. There's also crafter's secret. I don't care for simply soft yarn at all. Good video!

If you get back to a Hobby Lobby sometime (especially during a 30% off all yarn week), you might want to try Hobby Lobby's "I Love This Yarn" (100% acrylic worsted-weight, much softer than Red Heart Super Saver, more like Red Heart with Love). Yarn Bee Soft Secret is Hobby Lobby's Caron Simply Soft clone, and you might dislike it for some of the same reasons you dislike Caron Simply Soft -- it's slightly thinner, and even shinier than Caron Simply Soft. The one thing I especially like Soft Secret for is when I'm making something which calls for DK weight yarn, which I typically either don't have any of or at most have very little of in the stash; Soft Secret (or Caron Simply Soft) will usually work in a pinch for those projects.
