I recently did the same thing with all my art supplies. I particularly don't like soft pastels because of the dust they create and the difficulties I have in containing said dust. Despite having some really nice sets, I was absolutely reluctant to use them because of that. So out they went. We were having a neighborhood garage sale (I don't know what you call them in your part of the world, where you put everything you hope to sell out in your drive or front yard - we certainly don't sell our garages...haha). They all got sold. I held back the one small package I have that are water soluble (Charvins) and am much happier using them that way. I also got rid of a bunch of really cute watercolor palettes that I never used and only got them for the adorable factor - I have become picky on what type of paint I use. Plus, I really prefer metal tins with lots of mixing space or an airtight plastic one. What made it worthwhile was a woman who came up to my supply table, and told me she had to get rid of all her art materials years ago due to a sudden move and her life was so chaotic that she never got back to her art. Her life was different now and she was yearning to paint again. She handed $35 and asked what she could get for the money. Well, one palette alone was $35, but I told her that knowing my supplies would go to someone who would really appreciate them, I literally gave her about half of what I had for sale. She was in tear, and I cried with her.

That is so lovely of you to make the woman happy! Art is such an important way to reach out to people and we connect through a common love. Totally understand your point about soft pastels. I prefer the water soluble ones and the dust is pretty awful. I tell myself that it would be a good idea for me to thin out some of my supplies. There is really only so much that one person can use! We have a lot of flea markets here in my part of Germany and they can involve the whole town and if a house wants to participate, baloons are put on the front fence to show the people walking around. It is a lovely idea. Deb xx

Great collection of art materials...I absolutely love watching what other artists are using 😍 I did want to mention something about the pastels & panpastels....they come with serious health warning like the C word. Some of the panpastels are fine (the primaries) but a lot of their pigments contain carcinogens, nu pastels too and I'm sure other brands too. Also, came across a video from Winter Woods Studio today about her least favorite art supplies and she mentioned something about the pastels too. Please use precaution :)

Thank you! Actually, funny that you mention that. I did record a podcast for my Patreons about exactly that! We artists assume things are safe far too often without realising that some of the cheaper brands contain lead, cadmium colours are also to be treated with caution and remember that our skin is an organ and we should be careful about leaving products on our fingers. And yes, panPastels do have a warning and these things should be read and taken fairly seriously. But thank you for highlighting this point- it is worth raising. Deb xx

I’m in New Zealand and Jo Sonja is the brand of acrylics that my daughter and I use the most. My oldest tube would be over 20 years old now and the paint works just fine.

I always pronounced it as though it were an English word but I found out quite recently that it is Dutch and that is the way it is pronounced on home turf. Interesting! Haha, yep, I threw some of mine away a couple of years ago assuming that they would have had their day but no, still going strong! Deb xx

Hahnemuhle is available here in the US but is more expensive for us, I believe. But i think i could get the nostalgie sketchbook for around 20-25$. I've been wanting to try it, but i usually prefer just the smallest amount of texture. What would you compare it to?
@debbievongrabler-crozier2646
@debbievongrabler-crozier2646 3 күн бұрын
That is always the problem when recommending something- I tell myself to remember that i am talking to the whole world! The Clairefontaine Goldline has a tiny amount of texture and is my second favourite and another great choice (especially in the US) would be the Ranger Dylusions sketchbook. Love the square format too! Deb xx

If you use Pitt Graphite pencils to go over the top of other layers, do they sometimes smudge or what do you do to prevent that?
@debbievongrabler-crozier2646
@debbievongrabler-crozier2646 3 күн бұрын
Great question! It really depends on the layer and the pencil to be honest. Most are pretty good but it is a good idea to test what you are using as a substrate and, if in doubt, fix the graphite layer as you would pastels. Deb xx

What a nice surprise! I thought you were going to take a holiday from KZbin , what with all the holidays and stuff.. I will need to google what a jelly plate is... It's not the first time I heard of them, but after this video my curiosity is peeked😂 Thank you for another absolutely lovely video, enjoyed watching it a lot! Hope you had a lovely Christmas and wish you all the joy in the upcoming New year!

Thank you Ellen! Haha, I got all organised and scheduled some content so that I could have my cake and eat it too. I love Christmas but for some people, it can be the worst time of the year so it is nice to have something to take their mind away somewhere nicer. Cannot wait to hear what you think about Gelli plate printing! I am not really into most of what is done, I like my landscapes. I don't want to give the game away but do tune in next week...I have a special flip through..... Thank you so much! It was a lovely, quiet Christmas. I hope that yours was nice too and all the best in 2025! Deb xx
