The cultural and historical backstory that you provide gives the book context, and for me that makes the difference between a book I would completely look past and I book I would read. Thank you, Miss Lucy.

After watching this, I am even more excited to read Shirley. I really love how the Brontës’ novels give more insight into the minds of the women. It’s quite interesting to see the complexity of the woman’s mind, including intuition, emotions, etc. Looking forward to reading Shirley! ❤️

Hi Lucy, Great to found your channel. At first, I thought Shirley was a bit dry and difficult to get into. Thankfully, with your insightful review and enthusiasm, I got into it, especially when Shirley made her appearance in the story. I really admire Shirley's character, her independence, so outspoken and fiesty. I'm with you about her not wanting Louis to give in to her all the time. It's really a worthwhile read. I also totally enjoyed The tenant of Wildfell Hall which I read a few weeks ago, such a brilliant book! Stay well x😀😘

"I have just finished 'Shirley'; which I think better than either 'Jane Eyre' or 'Villette.' You must read it." C S Lewis, Collected Letters Vol 1...and yet, I've read the other two and haven't yet read Shirley. I'll be putting that to rights soon, as I think for Christmas I'm going to buy the everyman hardback that has Shirley and The Professor together in one volume.

I am just starting Shirley. I have managed to get an 1857 edition, from Haworth, published by Smith Elder and Co-author Curror Bell. This evening I am doing a talk at a local book club on the Brontes, and it is going with me :)

I want to say a big thank you for your recommendation of Shirley. If it wasn't for you I may not of ever read Shirley. And I absolutely loved it! So beautifully written, just brilliant! I listened to it on audiable, narrated by Anna Bentinck, and Anna had the perfect voice for this Novel. It felt like Charlotte Bronte was reading the novel to me. 😊

Also, i think the men in Villette, especially Dr John and M. Paul, are particularly well developed. Villette also tackles mental illness in an incredibly moving and complex way. And the ending is remarkable.

Shirley is the most openly, sharply satirical of Charlotte's novel, and I think the picture perfect happy ending is also satirical and actually quite angry.

I just finished Shirley. What a ride. Caroline and Shirley are of course amazingly complex characters that I loved reading about. especially their conversations about feminism and society were so inspiring and out of their time. The plot around the mill and the workers was alright, even though I felt like I've seen that done better and more in detail explored in North & South. Overall, I thought the novel too long for the plot. And the ending ... I did not expect that. Both of the relationships feel weird to me and where have my female warriors gone? Replaced by tamed lionesses (or how is it called?) and loving wifes? I don't want to say that you can't be a domestic and strong woman at the same time... but I'm still disappointed. They could have lived with Mrs Pryor in their big estate and have the most wonderful time - without relationships in which they have to 'play themselves down'. Your comment on this one line (that Shirley actively gave responsibilities away to Louis) holds though, at least there's that. Maybe if we had seen more of what the actual marriages of them looked like, I might feel better, this way it is kind of only teasered and left to the open. Gotta be thinking about this for quite a while now. Great video, Lucy!

I agree, Shirley is the best English classic. Better than Pride and Prejudice, better than Middlemarch, better than Vanity Fair. Better than Bleak House. Conrad’s Heart of Darkness comes close but it’s really about the colonies and not England proper.
