Fantastic video. I've read or own (therefore will read soon) so many of the books you've mentioned here. I'm still reading Pirsig's Zen/Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and I'm having trouble with it. Great list! definitely going to check out a few of them. I would like to point out that John Milton's English is actually Early Modern English. Shakespearean English is also Early Modern English and is actually slightly older than Milton's but because Shakespearean english has more influence on modern English, it's easier to understand. They are "old" but not "Old-English" old Old English looks like this: "þēod-cyninga, þrym ġefrūnon" (from wikipedia, except of Beowulf) Evolution of English Language (after English became a distinguishable language): Old English -> Middle English -> Early Modern English -> Modern English

@danielcookman39719 жыл бұрын
Here's a bunch more books that I've read that you might be interested in - I'm sure you've read some of them, if not all! - Red Mars Trilogy: a truly epic series about the plausible colonisation of Mars (think roughly 50 years after The Martian), so good that it was the reason Hank Green got into science and Mars! Not really a sci-fi, as it covers the more human and philosophical aspects of colonising/terraforming a new planet. - Ender's Game: I'm sure you've already read this one! The story of a kid genius who is forced to save humanity from aliens, via training in a military training camp IN SPACE! - Dune: Another of the "Sci-fi epics", if not the founder of the entire category. Let the spice flow. - Red Rising by Pierce Brown: A new sci-fi series, which crosses all of the above with The Hunger Games, Game of Thrones and Brave New World. Seriously, it's truly brilliant and manages to take all of the ideas from these books and make something both amazing in its sci-fi fantasy as well as terrifying in its dystopic elements. I agree with what you said about Brave New World - I firmly feel that 1984, Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451 (and possibly A Handmaid's Tale) should all be read together, as they collectively show the oppression of humanity via fear, pleasure, the media and religious zealotry.

Oh, I love Milton! My degree is actually in English Literature, and Milton is so wonderful. Do you read much Early Modern epics, Simon? If you're into it, I'd highly suggest Spenser's Faerie Queene. I love it so much. Also, If you want to give it a try, read "Coventry" by Helen Humphreys (not early modern). You'll get through it in one sitting, very short. Less than 200 pages and a very nice, touching historical fiction. I've just finished it and now I'm reading some Chaucer before my term comes back in full force! Dracula, obviously, is also AMAZING. Just finished rereading that as well. Aside from the books, I love your Crash Courses. I don't take to writing comments very often (you've hit my weak spot with the books), but I think the courses are super important. Don't be discouraged by the number of viewers just yet, it'll get there. They've had a HUGE impact on me, that's for sure. Well, take care! And warm winter wishes from Canada!

The strangest man is such a good book on one of the most underrated physicists of all time yet one of the most influential. Paul Dirac is really interesting. :D I just recently finished Quantum by Manjit Kumar, which you recommended; it was excellent! Simon, in case you haven't already, I suggest you read Gravity by Brian Clegg :)
