This video contains some of my favourite images of 2023. My top 10!
Before we kick on for another year, you might like looking back at some of my favourite images of the past twelve months.
The year ended with very mixed emotions for me. The sudden passing of my Father was a lot to handle. When dealing with that, I was finalising a partnership with an iconic company. It was a very bizarre situation. (I'll announce the partnership in next week's video)
Only when you see it in writing do you appreciate just how many miles you put in and how many hours and distances of walking you do! It's also nice to know that being a landscape photographer is rewarding daily.
As much as I have loved working in my studio for 20-plus years, nothing beats being out in the fresh air and working to your own agenda!

My father died 21 years ago, just before Xmas. Grief never gets any smaller, but other things in your life expand over time. Some things will always take you right back to the pain, but the number of occasions when you reflect on your father without so much heartache will increase. Be strong and take time to care for yourself - best of luck Gary and may your 2024 images be even better.

My Mom died a few years back, never connected with her well. She also did photography as a hobby. I never thought much of it then but now I'm doing it professionally and wish I had connected earlier. Time got away... Sorry for your loss.

Hi Gary, So sorry to hear of your loss, but happy to hear your dad was your greatest fan. I lost my dad in March 2023, 47:00 and he was just three days short of his 93rd birthday. My mother died six days before Christmas in 1994, unexpectedly, and it’s never an easy time, not that there is ever a good time to lose a loved one. Ayrmer Cove in Devon is pronounced ‘Armour’. That’s how my aunt, uncle and cousins, who lived in Devon pronounced it. I spent many summer holidays in the South Hams district of Devon and have been to Ayrmer Cove countless times in all sorts of conditions, but have never photographed it. I need to put that right. I remember seeing the Royal Yacht Britannia sailing past Ayrmer Cove with the Queen on board in the year of her silver jubilee in 1977. She had boarded in Plymouth and was in her way to Portsmouth. I think my favourites were looking up at Cat Bells and that frozen lake with the three rocks in the foreground, I can’t remember where in Scotland. Good for you for not giving away that waterfall location. Seeing what happed to the famous sycamore tree at Sycamore Gap shows us what people are capable of. All the very best for 2024.

Gary so sorry to hear about your dad it’s truly awful but as you say life goes on. He would have been immensely proud of you, even more so than he probably let on to you. You’ll continue to take photos that would make him proud, I know I constantly think about my dad especially when out in beautiful places on early mornings and it will help you think that he’s there with you too.

Hi Garry John Howie here mate President of Stirling and District camera club, we met recently in Glencoe at the Kings House with the silly stag, I am so very sorry for your loss of your beloved father, you and your family are in our thoughts mate, as I said when we met credit where credit is due on your success with your you tube channel as I and everyone I know love it and respect you as a photographer and after meeting you in person , you are a humble enthusiast and great communicator in your field and I believe that your father would have been instrumental in your early and your self development years in creating such a which I'm absolute sure to be a confident creative and helping individual which you are. I look forward to meeting you again and having a more intuitive chat, but for now respect , and please take the time you like so many of us need to grieve, small steps my friend talk and be open with your loved ones don't keep your feelings to yourself. See you on the flip side at some point Best Regards John

Condolences for your loss Gary been there almost 20yrs ago now and have to say it gets easier but you never forget, i am sure your father would be very proud of all you have achieved. Changing tact, i am appalled that anyone who follows your channel would have the nerve to complain about you holding back and not disclosing a particular location, you are so open in general not only about the location you are taking images at but also how you go about it in regards to settings and composition and the educational value you give freely, i have learned so much from your channel that i will be for ever grateful, and in a small way i have booked a workshop with you to Skye in March which i am very much looking forward to to show support and my thanks to you. Keep up the excellent work and see you on Skye.

I spent a day over the Christmas break down at Botallack, Cornwall (I live in Bedfordshire) following your footsteps across to the far rock in gail force winds... a touch hairy along that thin track), but was thinking of you. I do hope you and your family recover emotionally and that you are able again to start to focus on life beyond. Thoughts firmly with you! Keep up the great work! Hi Gary, Sorry to hear about your father. I totally agree with not giving the location. I have an amazing fly fishing spot. One night I was lying in bed going through my latest fly fishing magazine and there was a photo of the spot. It had to have been taken from right beside my fire pit. I have the exact same shot. Not only was there a photo, there was detailed directions to the spot. Most of the time I went I was the only one, or maybe one other person. After the article, the next time I went there were thirty cars, after that the farmer put a huge chain across the road, so I totally agree with not giving locations away. Regards, Lord Jack Thair

Watching your photo of the reflection in the lake of the mountain in the Isle of Sky (46:59) reminded me of a time a group of us from our local youth club went camping at the foot of Cadair Idris. One day we all climbed up the mountain as far as Llyn Cau, and when we got up to the lake the water was like glass and the reflection of the mountain made it look like we were looking down thousand's of feet, it gave me a real weird sensation.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Loved your 2023 review and the recap of why you liked the top ten. I enjoyed all your shoots. I recognised the images of Arymer Cove which were actually Westcombe Beach in South Devon. If you parked in the Arymer Cove little car park the first cove you come to is that. Further round to the right as you face the sea is Westcombe. I think one of your pics were of Arymer. Two fantastic locations specially this time of year for a sunset. Looking forward to more of your adventures this year. Best wishes, Chris

First of all Gary i would like to say sorry to hear about your father passing away and send my condolences to you and your family. Another great video. I remember every one of them. When you said about some of the nasty comments that you got about the secret waterfall in Glencoe I was disgusted and would say to them find it yourself and don't make stupid comments. It is your prerogative to keep certain locations a secret and i would do the same. I have photographed Elgol for a sunset. A bit dodgy getting over all the large stones as you would know, but a great place to photograph. I thought image's were absolutely amazing and you should be very proud of them. Wishing you a Happy New Year and a very successful 2024 and look forward to seeing your video's.

Gary, so sorry to hear of your loss I lost my Mum on 2nd December so, like yours no doubt, this last Christmas was a strange one. Your videos continue to inspire us all and as you have said many times there is often a deep connection with nature and the environment when we are absorbed in the photography process. This is truer now at times like these. Keep your chin up fella, keep doing it for your greatest fan, I have no doubt he was incredibly proud of you!

Stunning images. Missed a few episodes during the year that I clearly need to catch up on.
