Platinum Preppy is just amazing at a price under €10 (or $). Their nibs are awsome. I also love X159 (and my more than ten original 159). Pilot Kakuno, all sizes, is awsome too.

My favorite inexpensive pen is the pilot Kakuno. It has the same nib as the metropolitan but is a fraction of the weight, which I appreciate as I dislike heavy pens. Super smooth and writes well on the cheapest of papers. I use mine at work as an everyday pen and also to grade papers and have never had it falter or skip, even when filling out countless hall passes or jotting notes on sticky pads. It has even bumped the Lamy Safari (my first fountain pen) from my number one spot for affordable pens. The only small detractor for some might be that it’s sort of childish in appearance with pastel and primary colors and oversized caps.

I have all of those, but I seem to reach for my Platinum Preppy more. Those are damn near indestructible and if you get the Perpanep version, quite cute!

A good thought provoking video... I recently purchased different color variants of the x159 and once the novelty wore off I was just not feeling it and went right back to my O.G. jinhao 159s in all colors. For myself it's just a matter of preference. Had the metropolitan and others but the pens were less than substantial my 159s have Goulet jowo fine nibs , Knox, italix from Mr.Pen and the original nibs that they came with that are not bad. Also Sheaffer ( NOS ) no nonsense translucent pens which the nibs are just perfect. I use these pens for troublesome misbehaved inks. Easy to disassemble and thoroughly clean and great ink flow. Can't waste my time baby sitting temperamental fountain pens .

While I do have (and use) Kaweco Classic Sports, Jinhao x450s, Jinhao x159s, I also enjoy several styles of Hong Dian pens, the 960 (N1, in several colors), the Black Forest (in black, lavender, teal, and blue), and on the hefty side there is my three Hong Dian 1837 pens (with the Magpies painted on them, but I think they are actually Chinese Golden Pheasants). Full Disclosure(s)… The Hong Dian Black forest pens are what I use for note-taking in school. My three colors of the Hong Dian 1837's, I use with journaling en pleine aire… at local coffee shops, cafés, etc. Stylish pen cases (one red, the other lime green) from JetPens is just fine for me for both sets of these pens which go out and about with me. Before you ask… the pen cases come in other colors and their "technical name" is Lihit Lab Smart Fit Actact compact pen case. Just checked JetPens and they are listed at $12.50 USD.

I love the x159. I have it in EF, F and M. The M only became available recently. I can’t believe how good it is for the price. I have 5 and they all write perfectly out of the plastic wrapper. So juicy for a cheap pen.

The Shark pen is so cute, it's the reason why I purchased it. I agree it writes great. I also love the Jinhao x159 I have all the colors and have a specially grind on one of them. All the pens besides one wrote excellent right out of the plastic bag it came in. I take it out instead of my Montblanc, because I can replace it easier than my vintage 149. I have a few Kawecos. I would also put in the Twsbi Eco (t) in the inexpensive section as well. Thank you for sharing. Love your channel I hope you reach your goal of 20k.

Of the 3 I have the Jinhao X159. I have two of them and one has been "converted" to an eyedropper fill pen. It was an experiment and it works great (with the help of some glue on the ring next to the end finial). For the price it was worth the experiment. For even a less expensive pen I would have to choose the Wing Sung 3009. It has a hooded nib and a piston filler. It only comes with an EF nib but for $3, you can't go wrong. My last is the Hong Dian N1S. It is another piston filler with a lovely resin and a nice ink window.

I totally agree on the weirdness of the shark pen. Just can’t get past the look. I however love the metal Jinhao 159. I love it so much I have the yellow, lime, orange, red, white and blue. I also have purple coming this week. I adore heavy pens. My other favorite heavy pen is the Duke Charlie Chaplin.

Nice selections! 👍🏾 I love my Jinhao 159 and x750 models (I prefer a weightier pen myself). I'm interested in getting a Kaweco Perkeo, which is one of their least expensive models (at around $10-13 USD) even though it's much lighter than their brass or aluminum versions.

My favorite inexpensive pens (I categorize inexpensive as anything under $30) are the Pilot Kakuno, Platinum Preppy, Pilot Explorer, and Jinhao 82. The pilot metropolitan is an honorable mention. it's not my favorite because while it caps satisfyingly, it doesn't seal well. All of my metropolitan's dry out super quickly if they're not used daily.

I have some Jinhao X159s, and while they write well enough, I'm not blown away and don't find myself reaching for them. Perhaps the body is too large for me. My favorite inexpensive pens are the Pilot Kakuno (#1), Platinum Prefonte (slightly less cheap looking than the Preppy), and the Faber-Castell Grip. Moving up a little in price but still under your $100 limit, I really enjoy the Platinum Procyon -- an underrated pen if there ever was one. I also enjoy my Kaweco Sports, although I've had to mess with the nibs on many of them to get them writing well, so that downgrades them a bit for me.

Using your metric, where inexpensive pens cost less than 100, my favorite is probably the Sailor Procolor Shikiori. Mine is stardust. It's gorgeous. It looks so much more expensive than it is, and it is also a pleasure to write with if you like a gentle bit of feedback.

Both the Shark and Swan pens from Jinhao are the 993 model. (There's very few Jinhao pens I don't like. 😁) And the X159 looks more like a Sailor, in my opinion, than a Montblanc. Needless to say, I have more than a few Jinhao pens. 😉 Other under $100? I'll mention 3. First and foremost, a vintage Esterbrook. I'll fight anyone that says they're hard to clean and don't hold much ink. Almost as easy to clean as a cartridge converter pen, because of the removable nib units, holds as much ink as any standard international short cartridge. And I have several over 70 years old, still perfectly fine on the original ink sac. How many converters will last that long? 🤔 I have generally picked them up for around $20 on average. Second would be a Wahl-Eversharp Skyline from the 1940s. Possibly the nicest writers I own. And who would dislike that iconic Art Deco design from Henry Dreyfus? Another lever filler, first design advertised for use on aeroplanes, same capacity as a cartridge converter pen. And I have yet to pay over $30 for one. Even have a couple that were already restored in that price range. Though that type of price, I had to have massive patience, and turn down many (though they're still generally under $100 on average, I'm on a fixed income, and cheap, and generally do my own restoration.) Third one... This is where things get difficult for me... Definitely NOT a Parker 51. Have a Vacumatic one, and it was over $100. Plus they really don't impress me. But, much as I like vintage Sheaffer's as well as my beloved Esterbrook pens, I'm gonna go with a Parker 45. Easily available, generally from India at this price, for $15 plus shipping. Best pen Parker made, in my opinion. And best of vintage and modern. First introduced in 1960 for students, the Parker-Eversharp converter for the early ones is the design Parker is still using. So if there's not a converter, any Parker cartridge, or get a converter for it. One caveat: they're kinda slim by today's tastes, but I'm kinda used to slimmer than most today. I highly recommend a Parker 45 for anyone, even if you don't like slimmer pens. They were the US Presidential pen from Johnson to Clinton. And for under $40 still, regularly (price range fluctuates wildly) I really like the middle to late 1960s flighter. Identified by the end of the barrel being black plastic, they are stainless steel barrel and cap. Your choice of a gold tone clip and finial or chrome. This type just weighs RIGHT in my hand. Thanks, Kerrie, for making this old dog think! 😁

@@basta.dotto_ And both the Montblanc and the Sailor are design copys of the basic Sheaffer's Balance through their designs of the 1950s. There's really no design that hasn't been copied at one point. Only so many ways to make a tube that holds ink and lets it leak out in a controlled manner. 😁

I bought a cheap pen today, Sky Glory Foun Tain Pen SG301, with 2 cartridges, cost £1.00. I can't really afford expensive pens. I have two Pilot vanishing points (EF and F) and that's as high as I've gone so far. I recently bought the Majohn A1 (Moonman) and I am blown away at how similar it is to the VP. I would say its EF nib is more like a medium or a fine-medium, and it writes so wet and smooth. I paid $41 for it. I would say that the Pilot Metropolitan and the Pilot Prera tie for 2nd place on my inexpensive pens, and then in third is the TWSBI Eco. I've got a diamond coming in the mail and I'm curious as to how that will perform compared to the Eco. I put my favorite shimmer ink (Dominant Industry - Autumn Forest) in my Eco and it will stay there permanently. I put Polar Glow in my Metropolitan (medium nib) and it's great. I'm not a fan of the Kawecos. I did follow your instructions about making it write wetter, plus some other tips from another KZbin user (using a blade to deepen the feed groove, and using micromesh on the nib) and they do write a bit better. I'll keep them because they are good enough, but I definitely have to remember to reach for them. I've put nice inks in them to encourage me to use them. I just wish you didn't have to fiddle with them so much to make them write well.

1. Dissenting opinion here. I have the Kaweco Ice Sport Coconut and am disappointed in it. I find it off-puttingly flimsy and cheap-feeling. Though the nibs are spot on. 2. Here are three low-end pens I like and recommend: PenBBS 308, Pilot Parallel, and TiLiner Aluminum. 3. The low-end pen I actually use regularly is the Platinum Carbon Desk Pen , designed for use with Platinum Carbon ink. Sadly it is out of production and word is their current desk pen is not as nice, though I haven't tried it.
