Here’s a possible simplified set up. Use an ipad under the glass with a color screen saver. It will serve as the light source as well as the color or black and white combination for the table. Also eliminates a trip to the craft store.

I like these. Colored towels or pieces of Christmas wrapping would make interesting backgrounds. The black & white images are my favorites; very three-dimensional.

remember doing this during lockdown with some coloured fairy lights below the water and oil diffused with some tracing paper. great fun was had until I got oil on the rug and had a row!

Great idea to use towels or T Shirts. That was an issue for me. I got a starter pack of painting oils for a craft shop for about $6 AUD and slathered it over paper kitchen towel. It worked. I drop a tooth pick on to the water and use that as my focus point. I have some 5mm plastic tubing to blow on the surface.

I was in denia about my Wacom for over a year. But when I eventually got it, I got it. It is faster and more acurate than a mouse for all actions in Lightroom and Photoshop, with the exception of zooing as it does not have a scroll wheel. For individual spot removals the Wacomb is multiple times faster than a mouse if set up correctly and you have the feel of it. But not for everyone as some people do not like the extreme range of movement compared to a mouse.

This is very beautiful and frustrating at the same time, the initial shot is fine but the amount of work involved post shoot is phenomenal trying to eliminate all the dirt marks and tiny bubbles...a very informative video though and i will try this again.

The lovely forest behind my house was clear-cut this week, so I’ve been looking for inspiration on more indoor macro projects I can do. Not only did this video provide that, but it also helped me figure out how a particular series of oil and water photos that has perplexed me for years now was done. Very inspiring, Andrew!

This is perhaps one of the best "how to" videos on a photography project I've seen. Great instruction and detail on how you actually did it. I can't wait to try this at home. I love minimalist photography and been thinking of some shots that I can frame and hang at home. I think this might be it. Thanks.

Very good video. I did not think I'd actually sit through the whole half hour but it kept me interested. Those black and white images really have a more pronounced 3D effect, which is really cool. I tried doing this a few years back, might have to give it a go again.

@garysd9943

@@AndrewLanxonPhotography That's refreshing honesty :) I tried last night with baby oil but it seemed less viscous, so the bubbles looked flatter, and it also seemed like the small bubbles more quickly joined into one large bubble. So I think I'll go back to cooking oil. I need to figure out a way to set things up with more distance between the glass container and the background too.

Thank you for your inspiration and education. I will add oil and water to my list of projects. Surprised to see you editing with a mouse and not a Wacom. When I bought my Wacom, it sat in a drawer for a year. I was going to eBay it, gave it another go, got to grips, and now it is indispensable. So much quicker and more accurate than a mouse.

Thanks for watching! I have a Wacom and I use it from time to time, especially when I'm having to do more 'painting' style strokes, but for the most part I find I'm better off overall with my mouse.

I find it so hard to get the vessel of oil/water level, and then your camera as well. With such a shallow DoF, even being the smallest bit out of level seems to result in part of my bubbles being soft. Great video!

I have not done any of this for years. Found out you do not need a great depth of water. Another thing to try after you have done these rather basic shots is to add a little food dye and give a good mix in but multi coloured backgrounds are the way to go, for me anyway.

Thanks Ken! I used sunflower oil in most of them and a light coloured olive oil in others. It made almost no difference to be honest. Ideally I'd have been able to get some clear baby oil or something that doesn't have the yellow tint but it didn't seem to be a problem.

Hi Andrew, sorry to bother but i don't know how to fix this... i've always done focus stacking in photoshop but i this time i have a big problem.. i do my edit in lightroom > then i open layers in photoshop but then i notest that the previous edit in LLC is gone and the image is flat like if it was a RAW file. can you please help me ? i m desperate and i dont know how to fix it.
@robinc-k7162
@robinc-k7162 Жыл бұрын
hello! I don't know if this will be helpful but I always export my images from Lightroom to a folder on my computer first. Then I will open them from Photoshop as a stack (layers).
@guglielmo_arte_naturale

@@robinc-k7162 thank you Robin for your advice, but the same day i solved the issue.. i should delete the comment. what happened is that i wasn't using the same color space as photoshop, or sorry PH wasn't set the right way. so now every time i finished working on LLC i edit as layer in photoshop and then choose the right option which is the one up top using same color science as LLC. only for stacks tho cause i only use LL which is better.
