Thank you so much for this comprehansive video! I have been in Ecuador - in Cuenca- for 5 weeks now. We have visited this market one time to take it all in and get a lay of the land so to speak. We did buy a few things. This video has given me a better understanding of the market which will allow us to take much better advantage of all that it offers. I SO appreciate your work!

Living there for several years, my all-time favorite market was the Miraflores market off of Avenida de las Americas every Saturday. I visited just about every single market in Cuenca - large and small all over town - and it was hands down the most diverse and spectacular market I ever found! They are outdoors, each vendor has their own tent, many organic growers of produce, fish, meat, eggs, dry goods, food stalls and more. The bus stops right across the street making it easy to get to from anywhere in Cuenca. To me, it more of a real farmer’s market than the ones indoors like 10 de agosto or 9 de octubre. It was as big, if not bigger than those markets, and I looked forward to going every Saturday.

Yes I can understand that people feel uncomfortable or silly when their Spanish isn't great. I am nowhere near fluent but I see it as a sign of respect to at least attempt to communicate in their language and people are so gracious and really appreciate it.

10:16 hmmm perhaps in the Southern part of Ecuador bread isnt that much of a norm (Probably why i could never find a lot of bakerys in Cuenca lol) But I feel like in most of the Imbabura province its normal to have bread for breakfast... I lived with an indigous family for a few months and they would wake up at 3am to start making the dough so it will be ready by 6am. They would normally sell out by 8am... And in Otavalo in the centro theres basicly a bakery around every corner and they are open by 6am... Always amazes me how diverse Ecuador is
@ayngelina2 жыл бұрын
I think you're right as a few people mentioned this. In Cuenca they historically had bakeries in one section of the city. It's by where I stay. Sometimes I wake up early at 6 and think oh I'll go get bread but nope! Even my favourite old wood fired oven one doesn't open until 8am.

@maribelcevallos93742 жыл бұрын
In Quito most panaderías 🥖 open between 6-8 am, we do have it on breaksfast (I double checked this opening times in Google right now). The same goes for Ambato, where bread is a very important thing. Whereas in the coast they don’t usually eat bread in the morning cause they prefer green platain for breakfast.

I'm an hornado addict but the vendors in 10 de agosto are very stingy with their cuerito (the best part). My favorite place is at feria libre - right at the entrance, next to a bootleg dvd shop. Not only is it the best hornado but they also have the most delicious llapingachos in Cuenca. The hornado lady is only there on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Do you have any vids on flying to Cuenca and visa requirements and rental issues and things to look out for and look forward to. Sorry to annoy you. But you are the first person we have watched who wasn't totally insufferable.
@ayngelina2 жыл бұрын
That's very kind of you to say. It's not a bother. I do have videos of flying to Ecuador but it addressed a lot of Covid issues. To get to Cuenca I recommend flying into Guayaquil as flights are usually less expensive as it's a smaller airport and it's a quick drive or regional flight to Cuenca. Tourist Visas for Americans and Canadians are issued on arrival for 90 days. If you want to stay longer on the 91 day you need to pay for a visa extension, which I think is 133 but very easy to do. And any time after in a year requires temporary residency. In Ecuador you can't do visa runs like other countries where you get a new 90 days.

Why is your friend wearing a mask there's no mask mandates and Ecuador
@ayngelina2 жыл бұрын
Andres my guide? At the time we shot this Cuenca still had mask mandates. Although the President announced no mandates he didn't actually have the authority. It's not handled nationally but by province and cities can also enact them. Actually I believe Cuenca (and Guayaquil) still have them as it prepares for the next wave coming in the autumn. Right now I believe 4 in 10 are testing positive in Ecuador. Cuencanos have always supported wearing masks both inside and outside as they saw the devastation in 2020 in Guayaquil where they had mass graves whereas Cuenca was quick to mandate masks and weren't affected as much. I only took mine off to be on camera so in some cases where I'm speaking but not on camera I'm speaking through my mask.
