In the audio commentary for The First Avenger, they say Steve is so good at battle strategy because he's an avid reader. He's read a lot of books on the subject. In fact, the scene where he and Dr. Erskine have a heart-to-heart opens with him reading on strategy. You can see the pile of books at 23:49 How anyone would notice on a normal watch, I have no clue

Fun fact: The fight choreography in The Winter Soldier was inspired by the movie tie-in game Captain America: Super Soldier.

It has some flaws. But it's still a really special movie, and did a LOT of heavy lifting in making people care about the character.

I watched all of Agents of SHIELD and the impact of Winter Soldier changes the tone of the entire show. It ends up going really off the rails since it stripped the team of all resources. There are several plot lines revolving around trying to rebuild, but at the end of the day they're mostly operating as an independent strike force with a timeline completely separate from the movies. Highly recommend watching it though. They have the best version of Ghost Rider.

I just realized that in Endgame they basically do the same thing to Steve & Peggy's relationship that Futurama did in Jurassic Bark/Benders Big Score. Give us the emotional heartbreak in the original, then a few years later give us some closure to the relationship with a time travel semi-retcon.

Before this video, I felt really strongly about Winter Soldier being my favorite out of the trilogy but you made really good points with the first one being the best. Also, as someone who read the Civil War comic book, you made me hate the movie a little less. Cool video!

Wait, Howard Stark was in his 20s in WW2, so he would have been in his 50s when Tony was born. Tony’s mom must have been much younger.

That’s the problem you’ve never read his comics. Read Cap 300-350 great stories from red skull to flag smasher to being stripped of C.A. and then getting the mantle back!

Winter soldier I think is my over all favorite marvel movie I think. I could sit down and watch it any day, any time. I'll always get enjoyment out of it. (Btw, I think feet in the dash was purely for her safety. And not a rules thing. If that airbag goes off. And in his mind, I mean.. they could be attacked or found any time. Her legs are both broken instantly by airbags.) It helps that Natasha is my favorite character. Followed closely by steve (in the mcu anyway) It still makes me very sad thry moved away from what could have been more interesting parts gor Natasha and bucky. They even hinted at it slightly.. Her pleeding for him to recognize her. If they'd made her thr age she was in many comics. And given yhose teo their secret relationship.. it would have been even better. And more building onto their characters for both winter soldier and civil war. But all in all, they've done a pretty poor job on her. Which is why my preference for her is kind of.. picked and chosen. Bits from the comics, and bits from the MCU. Also, how little we actually get of Bucky's hydra backstory makes how awfully they treated him in the TV show just... I hated it if we're being honest. Also, the whole one step forward, two steps back. Is one of the reasons I hated his ending so so much in Endgame. It felt like such a slap in the face to everything that happened to tall of them. Everything that happened after the first avenger. Everything that Peggy did. Peggy's family. The founding of Sheild, because of Steve. All of it felt super cheap to Mr after that.

Just finished the First Avenger section, saving the rest tomorrow to listen to while I work. Great revisit on this so far! And you have a point, when WAS the last time I watched MIB? As always, I love this series and your perspective on all these films. While its not my favorite film in the MCU as a whole, I still appreciate the First Avenger a ton and feel that it stands out as one of the most unique in the franchise to this very day. The 40's setting does so much for me, especially as both a history buff and with an interest in film history. The contrast between characters like Steve and Tony that you mentioned, does a lot to add to that I think. Looking forward to watching the rest!

I'm a little over an hour into this: - as much as I love 'The First Avenger' one of my nitpicks is that the movie timeskips two years via montage but the film doesn't tell us that. It's the sequels that do, while also revealing that Steve fought in D-Day or met the President during that two year montage era. But those scenes aren't even shown via montage in TFA, so we're not getting the full canon scope of events. - I do think 'The Winter Soldier' (as much as I love it) would've been better if the United States government were the bad guys doing Project Insight and not hydra, as much as i think hydra is conceptually a cool premise, for infiltrating since the 50s - It's "na-taa-sha" not "na-tash-uh" lol. They pronounce her name in the movies a couple of times. - Hard disagree on Falcon's wings and moveset not being cool at all in TWS. Him being able to do that with a government wingsuit is what makes it awesome imo

I absolutely love this trilogy, it holds up exceptionally well even all these years later. The one thing I wish they had done in hindsight was name all the subtitles after war, it wouldn’t have even been that difficult Captain America: Current War (Cap is fighting the war of the time then goes to the future) Captain America: Cold War (fits perfectly with the spy thriller espionage style and the Winter Soldier) Captain America: Civil War (no notes it’s already a perfect title)

I got so much hate for siding with Cap in this movie, my friends were like "you actually agree with somebody who didn't even have a good reason to not sign the Accords" I don't see it being that simple, I'm on Cap's side because it boils down to whether or not you trust the government to do what's right in the time of need; I'd much rather depend on myself and what I can do than to depend on a government whose agendas can change at the drop of a hat Yea property was damaged, yea some lives were lost and that is very unfortunate, but the alternative could have been very much worse given Loki's plan in A1 & Ultron's plan in A2 #TeamCap4Life
@stevenventure84873 ай бұрын
I sided with Cap too. I still thought it was a missed opportunity for Steve to remind Secretary Ross about the nuke the government literally tried to drop on NYC during the Chitauri invasion. "Don't you think that nuke would've caused a little more death and destruction than we have, sir? At least we fought to protect, we didn't just write the whole city off as acceptable losses. Tony here created Ultron going rogue from the rest of the team... and he's your biggest fan? And you wonder why I don't want you to have power over us?"
@ipodclassic913 ай бұрын
@stevenventure8487 YES, ABSOLUTELY YESSSSSS you made a fantastic point about Cap making the case to Ross. Such a missed opportunity, but I feel like people only sided with Tony bc of the "cool, spectacle, action" of the mcu movies....not too many people think on a deep level of morals/ethics/etc

Great video. I would just like to push back on sone of your comments about WS tho. You mentioned that you think it wouldve been cool for steve rogers to be a little bit more grey area in the film, and while thats an interesting idea, thats not the point of the movie. The point of steves character is that hes an all good man living in a not all good world. Hes the embodiment of a better more simpler time where there was such a thing as good and bad. So thrusting him into a modern context where that idea is nonexistent, just makes steve more important to the sotry and the world. That hes the last bastion of a bygone era fighting for whats right. I think if they tried to make steve more grey area, the fans would be at each others throuts about this movie, similar to how people are woth bvs.

I seriously don't understand why they didn't find an excuse to give Sam some form of serum when passing the torch. But it's not like he'll be the first powerless hero, so I'm open to seeing how they handle it in his solo movie.

@2leftframes5 ай бұрын
I can't recall if/where that is in the video? It's been a minute! But assuming it is in there, I'll stand by that. If people are against Sam taking over as Captain America strictly on the basis of race - they have no leg to stand on.
@nickr69265 ай бұрын
@@2leftframes That's my whole point. He was made Captain America solely because of his race. Like almost all virtue signaling these days. The character's merit did not lend to him becoming Captain America.
@2leftframes5 ай бұрын
@@nickr6926 Sam is a kind and good man who volunteers with vets, was loyal to Steve, has specialized combat skills, and had Avengers experience. I'm not sure Mackie's cock-sure attitude will be the best fit for the character? But I'm down to give him a chance. And on the flipside, Bucky didn't want it. That's the single most important part. Beyond that, I don't think the public would be enthusiastic about someone who was brainwashed by the Soviets taking charge. The biggest things in his favor were a history with Steve (which Sam also has), and super solider strength (which is probably his biggest advantage over Sam). Overall, I still think promoting Sam was the right choice.

Why is it weird to dislike turning The Falcon into Captain America? No-one can fill Steve Roger's shoes...so why not honour him by letting his name and costume be his alone?

Using “freedom” and “the Declaration of Independence” with a tone of voice that indicates they’re bad or something is a bit offensive. Especially since if you don’t like those then you’re cutting the legs off essentially. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution made Steve Rogers who he is, those ideals informed his entire person and he lives them out. It’s hard to have Cap without those documents.
@2leftframes Жыл бұрын
My point is that I'm grateful they did more with the character than making him some 1-dimensional patriot. It would have been so easy to give him no depth beyond those basic ideals. They are very important to his character! But I wouldn't have enjoyed the character or his movies if they didn't back Steve's moral foundations up with more well realized character traits. I'm not saying either of those things are bad, just that a character whose entire personality is "freedom and independence" wouldn't have been nearly as captivating.
