I put a litter box in front of the door, I even SCREWED IT into the door, so I could open it and they wouldn’t be able to move it. They still poop beside it, I’ve tried potty pads, everything. I can’t do a “poop prevention either because of the way the door opens in the corner 😭 I just accepted my fate of watching for poo as I come in and cleaning every time I find it

Hey! I just want to say thank you for all the info in all your videos! I had a ferret before I became a mom to a human child (ha!) and then the human children took all my time and money. The loves of my life and I decided the kids are old enough now to help with pets of their own (I personally have snakes, fish, a bearded dragon, and of course a dog. Anyway we got 2 babies about a week ago and I'm so glad for all the info that just wasn't there 16 years ago! I pour my heart into all our animals and the ferrets have a great start thanks to people like you sharing all the ins and outs about proper care among many things! So thank you. Again. And I love your apt! We have super hero movie posters and movie props on every wall, action figures, books, Harry Potter, GOT, swords and other weapon displays, I I really enjoyed your tour, totally up my alley!

I can relate the ducktape. I have to use ducktape under my dishwasher coz whoever lived here before me, didnt put the panel back on so my ferrets could just crawl around under the dishwasher. I cant even use the dishwasher now coz they broke the plastic pipe that the water goes through and I'm too lazy to get a new part and fix it. And to keep them out, it's just pounded with duck tape, coz they love to battle it and try to get through in protest, disagreeing about my decision to block it off lol. I have Teal ducktape. Looks a bit silly there but Gotta do what you gotta do!

So do ferrets not need as much darkness as I keep being told they do by my son? My son keeps telling me that they need a lot of dark and less light. Thanks in advance, love your set up! :)
@FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets3 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of misconceptions with ferrets and how much darkness they need and a lot of people think they need more darkness than they actually do! The reason that darkness is important to them is that ferret's hormonal cycles rely on natural day and night cycles to indicate what time of year it is. Winter having shorter days, and summer having longer days. This basically sets their bodies natural clocks which tells them when it's breeding season, when it's time to start putting on winter weight, and when it's time to slim down for summer. By having your ferrets in a super bright place all the time, you may be messing with that internal clock therefore causing their hormones to break their natural cycle. This is dangerous because irregulated hormone production is directly linked to the development of adrenal disease (a cancer of the hormone producing adrenal gland). SO BASICALLY what you should be doing is this: lights are fine during the day time when the sun is out, but at night you should be trying to keep the light to a minimum, or be providing your ferrets with a completely dark space. I hope that answered your question!

Do your ferrets ever have an issue with finding a litter box as they are roaming around the house? I have a new kit ferret that I’m trying to potty train and little by little allow to explore more areas of the house
@FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets3 жыл бұрын
My girls only miss the litter box 1 in 10 times, and normally when they do it's right in front of where the litter box is. The key is to put the litter boxes where the FERRET wants them to go (even if it's annoying for you). If you notice an area that they're squatting or using the bathroom in a lot, it's a good place to put one because they already naturally want to use that spot, and you're going to have an easy time convincing them to.
@Jonathan-hq8od3 жыл бұрын
@@FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets how do they find the litter box though? When they are running around and all of a sudden have to potty. Do they remember where their litter boxes are, can they smell them, or just see them?
@dans.63054 жыл бұрын
What are you using for your litter boxes? Most have cut-outs. Are they cat litter boxes that you lowered the sides on? Or are they storage containers you cut-out entrances into?
@FriendlyNeighborhoodFerrets4 жыл бұрын
They're litter boxes that I got at the dollar store, and then I used a dremel to cut the edges down. My girls are lazy and don't like to hop into them, so I have to make them low enough to walk into lol

Alright- so. I have a few questions that I need someone to answer for me! Here goes: I want to get ferrets. Everywhere says that I should get 2 ferrets so that would happen. The thing is, both my sister and I are primary students (I go to high school next year so I don’t know how it would change). My mum works part time, and my dad can’t work. Dad has made it clear that he would NEVER take them out of their cage or look after them. Mum also won’t take them out. Would it be healthy for them to keep them in their cage from 8:45am-3:30pm, Monday-Friday all year (apart from holidays)? I have still managed to find a way to let them out of their cage for 4 1/2 hours on weekdays, but I’m worried that it may not be healthy to keep them in their cage for 6 hours. So yeah- is that healthy for them? Another question: they would be kept in my room, and the only place they could be kept would be against a window. I don’t know if it’s unsafe for them to be kept against light all the time, so what would you suggest for me to use. Even more questions: My dad is really against smell. He thinks that the smell of ferrets will make him faint, and that the smell would travel all throughout the house. He has seen videos about how to keep them clean, but is still against it (even though our cat stinks). He has said that when the lockdown we are in is over, we would go to a pet shop to smell them. But I’m scared he’ll smell one that isn’t nice, and go against them. Is there any difference in smell between shelters, breeders and pet stores? One final question: How much do I feed them? Some websites I have read say to give them 8-10 small meals a day (which I couldn’t do), while others say to do breakfast and dinner and some food throughout the day. If I were to get 2 ferrets, and feed them a raw meat diet, what should I feed them, how often, and how much? I’m so sorry for all the questions, I’m just really worried I won’t be able to look after them if we got ferrets
@jeifividnnendnckcod2 жыл бұрын
well first, if you cannot provide AT LEAST 6+ hours of free roam time a day then you should not get them. IF you can provide that then i wouldn’t do a raw meat diet just because of the entire situation. Get wysong ferret food, it’s one of the really good ones i heard. and for the light thing, i would get a cage cover to at least block the window side
@Cailey_forman2 жыл бұрын
@@jeifividnnendnckcod ok, thank you so much! I could be able to provide 6 hours all together, but there would be a time in between for school which, as I say is 6 hours too. So about 1-2 hours in the morning, and the rest after 3:30pm. I’m assuming it might not work though?- I’ll look into that food you recommended. Would you recommend and raw meat at all? I’m guessing it might be important to, but yeah.
